three years 100 success on creative life admit members plans not final outlook good carl van doren literary edi tor of the century magazine was the speaker of the evening at the sixth annual banquet of the lehigh and lafayette chap ters of phi beta kappa this banquet was held last monday evening in the hotel bethlehem and was attended by more than a hundred members and guests of the pennsylvania beta and gamma chapters mr van doren spoke on the subject of the search for the creative life which he declar ed offered a balance for the staid dull life brought on by the tendency toward standard ization he pointed out that two ideas seem uppermost to day one of these is ameri as members of the junior class were seating themselves in the hotel traylor last mon day evening for their annual banquet the underclasses of lehigh were in a seething ex citement over an authentic re port which claimed that the sophomores were to banquet in the hotel bethlehem less than two hours after the juniors got started the suddenness of this move was intended to throw the frosh off their guard and to prevent the working of the formidable organization which the sophomores so much feared con on page 4 col 5 how successfully it worked is a question which will prob ably be debated through the to the tune of to the vic tors belong the spoils the freshmen marched into the ball room of the hotel bethlehem on wednesday evening at the close of a very strenuous ban quet season and staged a ban quet at which practically 99 44 1 00 per cent of the class was present in spite of the ef forts of the sophomores for two nights before the fresh men had been collecting at the hotel in preparation for the event the frosh who went to their classes on wednesday were practically all captured before the day was over but with very few exceptions were present at the banquet one of the most noted per con on page 3 col 3 canism with henry fordism and fundamentalism ; which idea aims at making the indi vidual a mere unit in a gigan tic machine the other is a grouping of men of letters and anti-prohibitionists among the latter independent thinking and acting is given encourage ment con on page 4 col i ) he entered a plea for creative living and thinking as opposed to standardization of routine and regimentation of thought he urged the recognition of minorities he pointed out that when the progress of unifica tion in the country reaches the stage of uniformity there is likely to be danger and to avoid this we search for the elaborate plans for house party a dinner will be given officers lehigh lacrosse team plays navy alice banquets just before the hour for the sophomore banquet ar rived a taxi stopped at the hotel bethlehem and a young lady stepped out a number of sophomores are guilty of having allowed their mes to follow the youthful figure and it is suspected that some even commented upon her gracefulness once inside however things began to happen the young lady fair alice of mustard and cheese fame decided that if she wished to banquet with the sopho more class she must do so as a member of that group and so with a sweep of the hand she brushed aside the wig and became — john alfred black now blacky 1 ' understand wanted to get to the sopho more banquet but he was in a tight place because there were several frosh who just insisted upon hanging around so he plays the party scheduled for the week-end of may 1 st still continues to be the most important event on the college calendar the com mittees are busily working on plans to make this the best house party ever held at le high it is unfortunate that no fra ternities have as yet decided to hold tea-dances on thursday afternoon unless some action is taken shortly this may prove a rather dull afternoon for our fair visitors and to date only one tea-dance has been scheduled for friday af ternoon that being at the sig ma phi house this one will certainly be rather overcrowd ed unless other amusement is provided lsewhere the brightest spot of the house party season will undoub tedly be at the junior prom on friday evening the prom committee composed of bob harrier chairman bill wil murt jack hayes gordon ridsdale paul sinwell and ir ving miles have been taking every care to make this junior prom second to none and by all indications they have suc ceeded admirably con on page 2 cou 3 the committee has been es pecially fortunate in securing the services of louis cohen and his orchestra for the occasion cohen played at lehigh house parties for three consecutive seasons before they were die continued and made quite a hit and this year he is report ed to be better than ever the prom will be held in the gym as drown hall would scarcely be large enough to ac commodate the crowds no time and expense will be spar ed in suitably decorating the the members of scabbard and blade held their regular meeting wednesday evening in christmas hall arrangements were made at this time for a dinner which will be given at six-thirty monday evening in the newberg inn to the inspect ing officers and pledges of the society cadet lieut colonel frank g kear commander of le high's battalion and first lieut in the scabbard and blade society was elected to represent the local organiza tion at the national convention to be held in battle rouge louisiana at the louisiana state college captain bond had previously been selected as delegate to this convention but was unable to go when it was learned that absences would not be excused this convention will be held the last two days of april and the first of may but it will require a week's ab sence for the lehigh delegate the society discussed the awarding of medals and altho no definite decision was reach ed it is probable that the cus tom of previous years will be continued formerly the mil itary science and tactics de partment awarded prizes to the senior and junior who showed the greatest degree of military proficiency last year a l bayless captain of scabbard and blade and major command ing the unit received the sen ior award and f g kear present battalion commander received the junior award similar prizes will be awarded again this year con on page 3 col 3 captains h w robinson c l wright and n l bond were appointed as the commit tee in charge of making plans for the banquet monday eve with the approach of house party and all that means in the lehigh calendar the under graduate mind is turning to the outstanding social event of the scholastic year the junior prom the prom is the most famous of all dances at lehigh and the biggest event of th house party week-end this year the prom will apparently be the most successful one in the history of the affair the prom committee has been at work since the easter holidays perfecting plans for decorations music favors and the similar essentials which will make the prom the main attraction of the next week end no effort has been spar ed in the attempt to make this year's dance one that will be long remembered by those who attend the gay fox trots and dreamy waltzes on the evening of ap ril 30 will be furnished by louis cohen's famous orches tra in the days before house parties were banned this or chestra played at lehigh for three consecutive years hence the return of an orchestra which won so much favor here in former years is looked for ward to with a great deal of interest by the student body since their last engagement at lehigh louis cohen's music makers have played for house parties at lafayette cornell williams perm and amherst they have also played at the greenwich field club the ny ack club the sewanoy country club and other famous clubs throughout the east they have been playing in well known new york night clubs between these trips obviously the mu sic alone is enough to insure the success of the prom and its enthusiastic reception by the house party couples in addition to the musical attraction the gym will be de corated by a well known decor ating concern in colors that will be appropriate to the sea son and to the occasion there will be favors for every fair lady present that are calculate ed to delight the feminine heart to the nth degree and attrac tively engraved dance programs to be treasured in memory of the great event adding the last touch to an affair that is apparently already perfect there will be a midnight supper served which will tempt the most jaded palate all in all there seems to be little else that anyone could ask for an en tirely perfect evening except a house party girl with whom to share this good time the charge for the prom will be announced by the com mittee in the immediate fu ture according to the present estimates it should not exceed seven dollars as a maximum it will very likely be considerably con on page 2 col 5 the stickmen of lehigh left this afternoon for annapolis where they will encounter the middies tomorrow afternoon in a match which promises to be one of the most hard fought of the current season practically the same number of men who made the trip to princeton were included in the category of the squad for the navy con test although the naval men have played two rather weak teams their strength must not be un derestimated last saturday the brown and white rival la fayette was snowed under by a 23 to 0 score new york university also has suffered a 4 to 0 whitewash at the hands of the navy stick wielders thus it can readily be under stood that uncle sam's lacrosse team includes a group of speedy and brilliant performers who have excellent stickwork and hard-fighting spirit this cou pled with a never-say-die atti tude makes the lacrossers of the academy formidable oppon ents con on page 2 col 5 to win this game will add greatly to the prestige of the homesters next saturday they in regards to coach car penter's men it might be said that last week's tussle with rutgers and some hard scrim mage work during the past days have put the team on edge for the impending conflict a new spirit is prevailing throughout the entire squad each man re alizes the possibility of a cham pionship calibre team for the south mountain college con sequently some scintillating per formances have been exhibited in the recent practice matches the attack is seemingly advanc ed while the defense has clear ly shown decided improvement on monday and tuesday the annual war department in spection of the r o t c unit of lehigh university will be made by two officers detailed by the war department the purpose of this inspection is to determine whether the unit is qualified for the distinguished college rating given by the war department to institutions where military training has reached a commendable grade senior r o t c units es pecially designated by the war department are being inspect ed at this time throughout the united states for distinguished rating only those educational institutions which are already distinguished or those which stand high in the estimation of war department officials are eligible for such inspection lehigh is situated in the third corps area which con tains eighteen colleges univer sities and military schools hav ing senior r 0 t c units of this number only four are now classed as distinguished col leges those four are uni versity of maryland pennsyl vania military college virgin ia a and m and virginia military institute lehigh university held the proud distinction of being a distinguished college in mil itary training during the years of 1922 1923 and 1924 in 1925 she lost her rating it is perhaps a stranger coincidence that no endowed college in the corps area last year received the distinguished college ra ting and that only those col leges and universities which were government land grant or government aided colleges did receive such recognition this would seem to indicate that lehigh suffered in part at least because of lack of facili ties for training such as ar mories drill grounds etc with which land grant and govern ment aided schools are gener ally provided however this year with the new and splen did facilities which will be available upon the conversion of the commons into a near ar mory with adequate indoor in struction facilities and store rooms and with the general improvement of the unit both in theoretical and practical work lehigh's chances for re ceiving the award are excel lent the program for the two days will be substantially as follows for mon day examinations in class room work during the fore noon at eleven o'clock there will be a conference with pres ident c r richards during the afternoon the office facili ties recitation rooms and lab oratories will be inspected also the condition of military mater ial and the care of same will be investigated it is probable con on page 2 col 4 in the second match of the season the lehigh netmen played the team from new york university the violet team was composed of four vet erans from last year's squad and invaded bethlehem with high hopes for victory how ever the opposition was a lit tle too much for capt miles and his teammates and they went back to new york on the short end of the score this was the second straight win for coach carothers men ' the brown and white took four out of the six singles matches sullivan played bril liantly to come from behind in defeating cohen after the lat ter had won the first set the visitor had the point set on his own service but sullivan fought gamely and pulled the game out of the fire both men were ex ceptionally strong in the over head game and more than one rally was ended by a smashing drive from the net captain miller lost to snow of the violet after a hard match snow took the first set 6-0 but miller came right back to win the second 6-3 miller led 5-4 on his service but the violet netman broke through and fi nally won the set and match 8-6 trumbull played a fine game to down the opponents captain 6-2 6-2 miles had played first singles for new york univer sity last year and had given fritz mercur a good game at that time as a result trum bull's performance was a won bers of the team , derful tonic to the other mem doty defeated gleichman af ter three sets had been played both men played well but the brown and white player seem con on page 2 col 3 running against fitful gusts of a bitingly cold wind lehigh's track squad was defeated by the speedy representatives of swarthmore college by a score of 69 to 54 this is the second straight victory which the swarthmore combination has secured against the wearers of the brown and white last year the score was 71 to 53 which when one remembers that each team en tered only one pole vaulter this meet is practically the same as this year's degree of superior ity swarthmore holds the in ter-collegiate championship tit le for the middle atlantic states winning that rank in a meet in which lehigh took twelfth place so that the brown and white squad was up against one of the most formidable teams of the east while dual meet record breaking was confined exclu sively to swarthmore entrants lehigh men acquitted them con on page 3 col 3 despite the cold which had a tendency to demnish the effi ciency of the contestants three new dual meet records were set norton swarthmore clipped off a fifth of a second in the 120 high hurdles dutton swarthmore added eight and a quarter inches to the broad jump and baker also of swarthmore hurled the discus 1 36 feet ten and and an eighth inches bettering his 1925 rec ord by seven and three eighth inches
