work of the mandolin club the midweek rehearsal of the mandolin club was held in drown hall on wednesday afternoon with thirteen men in attendance owing to a press of work slate ll has resigned the leadership of the club and a new leader will be elected at the next rehearsal of the club on sunday afternoon . rogers 13 and crellin 12 are the most likely candidates the work of the mandolin club has been going on for a number of weeks but the usual interest in the organization seems to be lacking and as a result the progress is not as pleasing as might be possible while the club is well supplied with first and second mandolin players it does not have the re quired number of guitar artists at present two guitarists were lost this year by graduation leaving but one to begi n th i s season and up to this point one other player has been out all guitar players about the college are urged to come out and lend their support to the club after the rehearsal on sunday when a complete organization of the club will take place the practices will be discontinued until after the christmas vacation then work will again be continued and it is hoped that new interest will be manifested as with the addition of several guitar player s to the num ber of mandolinists that are now out for the club a very efficient organization can be formed in a short time the management of the musical clubs has secured several dates for concerts out of town this added to the fact that this year's glee club is one of the best that has represented the university in several years gives promise of a successful season a very interesting article has appeared in the memphis tennes see commercial appeal concerning captain james g ross oo who at the risk of his own life rescued one of his employees captain ross is at present assistant engineer in the united states dredging fleet he was a well known athlete while at lehigh and his athletic training certainly proved to be of great value to him in his heroic deed wednesday's practice the usual wednesday afternoon basket ball practice was in id in the gymnasium yesterday from 2 to 4p m nearly the whole squad of twenty men was out a long period of goal shooting finally concluded by a practice game was the order of the day unfortunately captain street is sick at present and may not be able to be in the next fe v practices the outlook for a successful season however is bright with a good nucleus of last year's team to build up a varsity prominent among the new candidates is cox the husky fullback on the foot ball team dr white is coaching the men attention is called to the basket ball schedule printed in this paper in the issue of december the 7th in contrast to the foot ball schedule which contained so many out of town games the basket ball team plays but one game away captain street declares this to be the best basket ball schedule gotten up since captain travis time when the university was represented by the best team in her history the manager of the team is to be congratulated for securing such an excellent schedule the first game will be played with albright on january the bth it is to be hoped that every stu on electrolytic corrosion or electro lysis standing described the effect of the electric current on vari ous metals in causing them to cor rode and especially the losses caus ed to underground iron and steel pipes by stray currents from the return rails of electric traction lines he also enumerated the methods employed in endeavoring to reduce this loss and explained the most important ones on electric locomotives j l farrar,mo gave an account of the several forms now in use the locomotives described in detail were those of the new york central the new haven tbe pennsylvania and the great northern railroads for light trains at high speeds the single-phase locomotives of the new haven seem adequate for both passenger and freight service direct current should be used while for freight service alone with trains running at a fairly constant and not high speed the three-phase motors are best r e brown 1.0 spoke on the interpole motor as the last ad dress this motor which has re cently taken so prominent a place in electrical engineering was intro duced into practice a number of years ago by mr f j sprague by means of curves and diagrams its construction opera ion and advantages system . allan mason chesney a member of the johns hopkins championship lacrosse teams for the last four years was selected by the athletic board as head coach of the lacrosse team for next season he will be ably assisted by frank g breyer and harry c schmeisser both of i whom were also members of the la crosse team there is some talk of securing a canadian coach but the athletic board decided to retain to its old method of alutnni coaching which has worked success fully chesney is considered one of the best all-around lacrosse players in the country and hopkins has been | fortunate in prevailing upon him to spare his time from his medical | studies to coach the black ami blue twelve he and breyer have been prominent in lacrosse circles for many years before they played on the
