basket ball wednesday's practice the regular basket ball practice was held on wednesday afternoon the team showing great improve ment over the work of the previous saturday about seventeen men were on the floor and all succeeded in getting in the scrimmage which lasted for about an hour the re mainder of the two hour period was evenly divided between signal an dsh 00ti n g practice me rkel ll was elected captain of the varsity to succeed street 10 whose resig nation on account of illness was reported in the last issue of this paper this is merkel's second year on the varsity and during that time he has shown himself to be a fast and clever player the line up was as follows — varsity scrubs merkel e f olson cole lawson l f throm rebert hohl bilheimer waltz o mccoy muthart butler l g peters price cook r g rooney basket ball notice tickets for the colgate game will be placed on sale at the supply bureau friday at 2 p m each student will be given one ticket for downstairs on presentation of his registration card all others must pay 50 cents per ticket downstairs each student will further be allowed a discount of 25 cents on each of two 50 cent balcony tickets this precaution is taken by the management in order that it may know just what tickets can be placed at public sale it is not the intention that students be required to pay in order to see this game mandolin club the regular practice of the man dolin club was held wednesday afternoon in drown hall more men reported than at any previous practice but in spite of that more men are needed the next prac tice will be held sunday at 2.30 p m in drown hall the follow ing men reported at the wednes day practice — corddry kerr vela saulsbury person houck crellin benjamin blackman ro land and sheppard e m meeting professor miller talks the regular meeting of the mi ners society was held on wednes day evening in williams hall after a number of new matters had been discussed including the consideration of a joint meeting with lafayette later in the term the papers of the evening were presented h p smith 10 presented as his subject the construction of the water supply system for the city of lockport lockport is in new york state thirteen miles from the niagara river which was selected as the source of sup ply the water was drawn through pipes four feet in diameter and forced by an electric pumping station the entire distance against a head of practically 285 feet as the niagara river is contaminated by the sewage of buffalo this water is not used for drinking purposes prof b l miller gave an illus trated talk on geologic and min ing features of the west last summer he took a trip through some of the mining camps of the west which include places of geolo gical interest his slides were well chosen and included several views of glaciers in action prof miller told of a mine around which a stone wall had to be built in order to deflect the glaciers and snow-slides illustrated by one slide in addition to slides of economic importance views of some of the most famous peaks were shown including pikes peak mount rainier mount shasta and the mount of the holy cross refreshments were served direct ly after the meeting lacrosse the first call of the season for lacrosse candidates was made by captain osbourne on wednesday afternoon fifteen men reported but no work was done repairs are being made to the cage and as a result practice will be delayed for several weeks a number of skylights and screens is being placed in the building and when these improvements are completed the facilities for work in tipping and general practice will be greatly enhanced washington's birthday programme washington's birthday will be appropriately observed in the chapel next tuesday at 11 a m the main feature of the pro j gramme will be the junior ora torical contest the following j order will be observed in the con test : oration william eward fair hurst scientific forestry in the juited states oration oscar lawrence jackson graham the effect of trusts on prices i 1 oration william harold mccreary the united states reclaimation service music-military march-schubert oration louis allgaier rehfass ship subsides oration george henry ruessner the panama canal oration leon wittgenstein postal savings banks music allegro " - guilmant announcement of the decision of the judges william r butler m.e 70 of mauch chunk caspar wister haines a.m 0.e 74 of philadelphia robert s perry a.c.,88 of philadelphia attendance will be required as all such exercises are classed as a college lectures .». _ minstrel show a meeting of the minstrel show was held in drown hall on wednesday afternoon at which time officers were elected for next year and other business was trans acted the election resulted as follows :—: — manager don gibson 11 assistant manager john e person 12 ;
