well earned congratulations are being received by the 1911 epitome board upon the merits of the junior class book which avas placed on sale at the supply bureau a few days before the opening of the easter vacation by dint of hard work the book was placed in the hands of the student body five days earlier than any of the epitomes of previous years the book is dedicated to john fritz whose constant interest in the advancement of lehigh was so generously manifested in the donation of our engineering labora tory while the book is made up essentially on the same plan as the former publications it contains a number of new features worthy of special mention most of the old drawings some of which had become standard were discarded and new ones sub stituted considerable money was spent on drawing and photographic work the book contains some un usually fine and hitherto un published views of sayre park the athletic field and portions of university park in addition to the usual cuts and silhouettes the book contains a number of neatly executed vignettes a type of work which has not been attempted in previous issues the department devoted to lehigh's progress includes the photographs and descriptions of the fritz engineering laboratory and the eckley b coxe mining laboratory instead of recording a lafayette foot ball victory the board has inserted a series of in teresting snap shots of the teams in action and the crowds on the bleach ers three important event s previously unrecorded are included in the book viz the presentation of the flag pole by the class of 78 the donation of sayre park by the children of robert h sayre and the election of charles m schwab to the board of trustees quality and durability are uniquely combined in the book the best grade of paper was used the fraternity inserts instead of being printed on a special grade of paper and pasted in are printed on the same grade and bound in the book thereby insuring more satis factory wear c c ist y at home april 23 navy at annapolis april 30 john hopkins at home may 7 swarthmore at swarth more may 13 stevens at home civil engineering thesis prize the register recently published announces the john b carson prize to be awarded for the best thesis in the civil engineering department the amount of this prize is 50 and the first award wilj be made to the class gradual ing this year stevens 9 lehigh 0 in the opening home game of the season on saturday afternoon the college base ball team was ad ministered an overwhelming defeat at the hands of stevens institute by a score of 9 to 0 recognizing the fact that the season is but one week old still the playing of the men was far below varsity par and showed a lamentable lack of knowledge of the game bilheimer held the visitors to a no-score for four innings but in the fifth round they began to find him and it was only after they had succeeded in accumulating eight runs off bilheimer and over who followed the former that the side was retired wolfram held stevens to a single tally in the remaining four innings throughout the entire game the visitors had many more opportunities for scoring but their failure lay in their inability to run bases the work of the university team was badly lacking in all depart ments of the game but especially in batting wolfram was the only man who was able to solve the de livery of harris and he was re sponsible for lehigh's three hits these with the addition of one base on balls and an error were the only times that the college team had men on bases the score :: —• stevens lehigh continued on second page by dr henry s curtis on friday morning at 11.30 o'clock dr henry s curtis of clark university delivered a lec ture on the revival of play as a world movement the lecture was divided into three parts deal ing with the movement in ger many england and the united states in his discussion of germany dr curtis spoke on the sand gardens which were started in 1885 of the association for work and play in germany which made reports on the amount of play given to english children of the examinations held in the playing of games of the spiel inspectors who had charge of child-play in the counties and of the course given to teachers to prepare them for the teaching of games to children in england where the tempera ture is such as to allow for out door exercise throughout the great er part of the year child-play is encouraged to a greater degree there are laws which state that there must be a play-ground of at least thirty feet square connected with each school and which must always be open to children every boy must play foot ball from twelve to twenty-one hours a week and girls must play at least twelve hours a week at cricket dr curtis then pointed out the fact that in america coaches were engaged with the idea of winning the games paying little or no attention to things of more vital importance he said that sports manship is an evolution of chivalry and that its doctrine should be to treat the opponent squarely give him every chance and then beat him on an equal footing throughout his lecture he em phasized the fact that play for the children of every nation is not sufficiently provided for that the amount of energy acquired is of vital importance and that the only way to procure it is through a great deal of play which also pro motes health ability to form good comradeship and loyalty in closing dr curtis said that if one can procure a vigorous childhood one has solved the prob lem of future robust manhood and womanhood
