concert lehigh club of northeastern pa twentieth annual dinner held at wilkes-barre the lehigh club of northeastern pennsylvania held its twentieth annual dinner at wilkes-barre on saturday night last the dinner was given especially in honor of the attorney general mr geo w wickershain avho attended courses in engineering at the uni versity from 1873 to 1875 in the class of 77 and left lehigh to take up the study of law in which he has made so distinguished a success among the guests of honor were dr drinker dean klein bishop talbot ex lieut governor wai res and judge wheaton of wilkes-barre mr w r butler of the class of 70 acted as toast master and the banquet was in every way a great success the address of the attorney general of which we give extracts below was the principal feature of the speech es speeches were also made by president drinker dean klein bishop talbot mr w a lathrop president of the board of trustees and now president of the lehigh coal & navigation company col wat res mr s d warriner of the class of 89 vice president and general manager of the lehigh coal company and mr w l raeder of the class of 76 a nation of ninety million peo ple mr wickershain said occu pying a great continent with wide ly diversified occupations and in terests can only maintain a pros perous and successful existence under a republican form of govern ment based upon universal man hood suffrage if its citizens and especially its educated citizens take a constant active interest in public affairs our fathers rested their scheme of government upon a belief in the integrity and the intelligence of the people they provided for the se lection of representatives of the people to make the laws to inter pret them and to enforce them it is for us to determine whether or not we shall hand the constitu tion on to our children unimpaired it is a stately and commodious structure shrewdly adapted to meet the changing needs of different i times thp«p n,vp minst ions that concern continued on second page a concert is to be given friday evening may (>, at 8 p m in the moravian seminary chapel by the university hand and orchestra mr samuel may m 0 and the uni versity quartette neither of whom require further introduction have both favored the organization by giving their assistance the con cert is being held for the benefit of the lucy m burd industrial school for hoys doylestown pa and is under the auspices of the teachers five o'clock tea club besides a large attendance of the yonng ladies of the seminary and the members of the teachers club a good representation is expected from the bethlehems it is hoped that the students will give their sup port to this worthy cause the ad mission will be twenty-five cents .«. _ reunion class of 95 the class of 95 will hold its fifteenth reunion on june 10th and 11th junior week was brought to a most successful close on saturday night with the annual production of mustard and cheese for twenty five years this organization i lias been presenting their perfor mances but none could have attain ed the unqualified success of this last effort every seat in the house was taken for soon after the seats had been put on sale the s r (). sign ! was necessary a great part of the audience consisted of people of out of town and many complimentary things were said by them express ing their delight in the show as usual the play this year was a musical comedy under the name of king popoeater pillar vii written by harold j snyder and the lyrics of which were written by | him also and horace dawson the ! plot is quite as light as is customary fora musical show but served to introduce the excellent singing and clever dancing for which the cast and chorus had long been training \ popocaterpillar is an aztec king t a bryant 13 guided and advised by monte the prime min ister t f hickey 12 and cm tan chamberlain r w jones m 2 the real ruler however is the queen k s colling ti and his daughter the princess c s kenney mo there conies to this kingdom a german hans w i davies mo with his daughter gretchen w a staab mo i bins is in search of idols in the hope of finding one in which a great stone of treasure has been stowed away in his efforts he is hampered by two young americans c l downs mo and b m thompson m 2 who are on the same quest naturally in the course of events theses two fall in love with the princess dorolan and gretchen hans works in league with the queen and chamberlain and suc ceeds in inducing the king to have the two americans imprisoned after a time they secure their release on condition that they ad vise him to raise money for the de fense of the kingdom their solutionis amateur theatricals and they proceed to rehearse the king large audience enjoys performance and fellows for a presentation of uncle tom's cabin in lieu of a baby which eliza is to carry across the ice an idol is substituted ii necessarily follows that this is the long sought idol and the play ends with the americans in possession of idols and prospective brides in all sixteen musical numbers were rendered all of which were vigorously encored . bryant though this is his first year in the show made a decided hit his acting being excellent and singing and dancing equally good his best work was with colling in their duet if columbus should dis cover us today kenney as a yore made good his make-up as a girl was flawless and both he and staab were loudly applauded on their entrance in the second act kenney's two songs the only one for me and idol love were both well received staab who did well in a girl's part last year did even better on this occa sion he looked and played the part of a girl to perfection al though not very strong in voice in singing the gir who laughs at you he made up by his grace in dancing and was encored several times colling was new in the cast this year but made an ideal im perious queen while his acting and singing were very good he is more to be congratulated on the pretty music which he contributed davies led as comedian and his accent won for him immediate ap plause lie did his best in singing advertisments " and received several encores hickey and jones made two funny advisors to the king jones showed up well in his bass solo student land downs and thompson looked and acted natural as two young ameri cans and both did very well the most pleasing part of the show was the original music con tributed by r n williams mo oiling 12 kenney 10 and 1 . gousha the music in itself was very sweet and catchy and the words clever much credit must be given to mr 0 l downing the coach and continued on third page the brown and white m i—l i a p a !
