college meeting — tn physical laboratory at 11 a m friday october 9 foot ball game — rutgers col lege vs lehigh on lehigh field at 3.30 p m saturday october 10 y m c a — reception in drown hall saturday october 10 at 8 p m founder's day hop the first college lecture of the current year was held on friday october the second in the physical laboratory and although it was intended for the students in general and the freshmen in particular the majority of those present were lower classmen the speaker dr estes of st luke's hospital south bethlehem was introduced by dr drinker he spoke on the subject of " hygiene and illustrated his remarks by two charts and a skele ton showing in detail all of the organs comprising the human body dr estes opened his address by impressing on his hearers the ne cessity and importance of hygiene for the formation of a perfectly healthy body and mind a right beginning he said is one of the most important means to that end habits are more easily formed than broken therefore it is of the utmost importance to start right dr estes then dwelt on the differ ent functions of the digestive ner vous and respiratory systems laying special stress on the question which is now occupying the minds of the world's greatest physicians that of tuberculosis — its prevention and cure he laid down simple rules for the ventilation of sleeping and other chambers there is no greater fallacy known than the popular idea that fresh air is the vital enemy of a cold it is not the fresh air from which we con tract colds but the air of hot stuffy rooms which has had all of the pure life-sustaining oxygen extract ed from it in concluding his discourse dr estes spoke of the bad effects of excess of any kind and advocated moderation in every phase of life lacrosse preparations are being completed for the hop on wednesday night and nothing is being spared to make it a most enjoyable time it is definitely known that a large number of new york alumni will be present and several are expected from pittsburg music will be furnished by an orchestra which makes a specialty of dance music the refreshments will be served by a reliable caterer the hall will be splendidly decor ated and everything the committee can do will be done to make the evening a success track founder's day sports the interclass games will be held on the athletic field thursday afternoon at 2.00 the relay will be the first event between five men from the 1911 and 1912 classes this will be followed by the baseball game and the last event will be a football game the follow ing timers f c anderson 08 c gonzales 09 in accordance with the instruc tions of the athletic committee the lacrosse team met in drown hall saturday and nominated three men for manager of the lacrosse team for the season 1908-1909 the men nominated will be voted upon by the college at large at the meeting friday they are as fol lows : e m mervine c g thorn burg and l r carrier this action was made necessary by the resignation of garrett speirs as manager who found that with the foot ball captaincy and other work he would be unable to fill the position at a meeting held monday noon the following men from the junior class were nominated for track managers g a caffall g r homer and e c smith band practice conference school the conference school is now in full progress and bids fair to become one of lehigh's permanent insti tutions its students are with very few exceptions taking rapid strides towards the overcoming of those difficulties which handicap their college work the band will practice wednes day 7.30 p m this week instead of thursday founder's day wrestling club all those interested meet in drown hall wednesday at 1.30 p m lehigh defeats stevens 5 to 0 lehigh opened the football sea son last saturday by defeating stevens stoo on lehigh field on the whole the game was rather slow and uninteresting as far as lehigh was concerned this was due to the fact that most men were new at their positions and many substitutes were played captain speirs was unable to play which greatly weakened the backfield at quarterback the fast playing and sure passes of anderson were greatly missed but kesselman and bilheimer give promise of develop ing into hardy players at center potter the new man from swarth more prep showed up very well both in offensive and defensive work in general the line held very well but did not seem able to open up the opposing line so that the backs could gain consistently the new man in the backfield donald son did especially well martin's kicking was a feature of the game each punt counting for consider able gain martin started the game with a long kick to stevens fullback who only succeeded in advancing the ball about twenty yards unable to make any decided gain past am an who tackled the man each time stevens kicked aman re ceived the ball and ran it back for five yards through steady gains by brumbaugh and donaldson the ball was carried within five yards of stevens goal when aman ran around the end for a touchdown aman failed to kick the goal the ball stayed in the center of the field for the remainder of the half both sides did considerable kicking but neither team succeeded in making any consistent gains the first half closed with the ball well down the field in stevens territory there were frequent changes in the lineup during the second half most of the time the ball was kept in stevens territory but lack of consistent gaining prevented le high from scoring at no time did stevens have the chance to score several times during the game attempts at using the for ward pass resulted in fumbles and losses for our team the lineup lehigh positions stevens archer left end bruce treat left tackle hearsey martin world over occupies a distinct position in american literature the celebration is the first of the term in which the dor mant college spirit will have a chance to make itself felt and we are sure that the student body will take full advantage of it every man in the university ought to be present at the chapel exercises at 11 o'clock as well as in attendance at the afternoon's sports a host of alumni will return for the occasion aud we want them to feel that we are a strong united college body working for lehigh's interest let every student feel it a positive duty to take part in this
