band — thursday evening at 7.30 in the physical laboratory arcadia — thursday evening in drown hall at 7.30 foot ball practice — every evening from 4 to 6 and wednes day afternoon the subjects for the orations for the junior orotorical contest to be held february 22 1909 as an nounced for this year are the fol lowing — public life of lincoln the origin of the republican party proposals for the abolition of war the insurance of bank deposits the future of our coal supply the developement of scientific forestry in the united states the causes for the decline in birth rate shipping subsides should our tariff be revised revival of protectionism in england the effect of trusts on prices the causes of panic in 1907 the stock exchange and money market economic significance of the panama canal improvement of the mississippi river should injunctions be prohibited in labor disputes the future of engineering edu cation the relation of chemistry to industrial development can the white man civilize the tropics the value of th c monroe doctrine . should we exclude oriental ladorers the growth of socialism in the united states committee prof stewart mr emery cheering practice — tuesdays thursdays and fridays at 5 p m on lehigh field lacrosse practice — every tuesday and friday afternoon on the field minstrel show rehearsal tau beta pi election despite the bad weather a fairly well attended rehearsal of the min strel show was held at the delta upsilon house wednesday after noon the show this year prom ises to be one of the best in a long time the songs that are being tried out are most of them qviite catchy the competition for end men will be stronger than usual this year as all the men trying are of remarkably good caliber al ready several good stunts have been submitted for the second part and all indications point to a good show havenstein jennings bellis hoppoek garrison goedeckc zollinger struble harvey corbin agthe porter heilman and small at the last meeting of tan beta pi the following seniors were elected to membership in that society team left for washington this morning eighteen men left on friday morning at 8.04 for washington pa via harrisburg and pittsburg for the game with washington and jefferson the final decision in regard to the field where the game is to be played was reached only a few days ago the understanding originally was that the teams were to meet on the grounds of the car negie technical schools at pitts burg through some misunder standing the technical manage ment scheduled a game with penn sylvania on their field for the same date this eliminated pittsburg as a location for the game har risburg was then considered but advices from that city claimed that the event would not draw the necessary crowd an attempt was then made by coach dickson to obtain franklin field in philadel phia but it was discovered at the last moment that it would conflict with a track meet consequently washington presented ifc&e only alternative at the late date but little is known regarding the strength of the w and j team yale defeated them 38-0 last saturday but this does not by any means show that yale was 38 points better indeed the visitors started the game by rushing the ball for forty yards through the yale line without once losing the bail it is a long and fatiguing journey from washington to new haven and no team could take the trip and play its best they will undoubtedly greatly outweigh le high newspaper reports to the contrary consequently everyone is looking for a very hard game wednesday's practice was dis appointing but not because of the spirit or playing of the men who were on the field in fact the varsity showed up very well it was a noticeable fact however that every one was out whether the pro spect of a wet and muddy field led them to believe that there would be no practice or not is hard to say but the absence of eight or ten men from such an important prac tice could not fail to have a dele tori ous effect the men are in very good condi tion in spite oi the numerous acci dents of wednesday afternoon the injury to desh's knee is not as bad as was at first supposed lawson however seems to have a bad side while tremlett is having trouble with his ankle with the exception of these men the squad seems to be ready to put up a first class game on saturday the officials for the washington and jefferson game tomorrow are godcharles lafayette referee ;
