game will begin at 2.30 p m aets and science club a well attended meeting of the mechanical engineering society was held on tuesday evening at the home of dr drinker • e n miller l s 08 gave a very interesting paper on air brake equipment he dwelt mostly on what is required of the air brake to properly control the heavy trains of to-day and what has been done by the various railroad companies and manufacturing concerns to meet these requirements he point out that the air pump which furnishes the power for the con trolling of the train by compressed air is by far the most important part of the air brake system and finally discussed the precautions and inspections necessary to make such a system intact a g small 09 was called upon for an extemporaneous speech he related someofhis experiences dur ing the summer working in the lehigh valley shops at say re his talk was decidely beneficial in that it showed the different condi tions which confront one and the many ways of meeting these con ditions w a slifer c e o4 with the portland cement co , gave a lengthy talk on cement he reviewed the historical features of cement from its use by the ancients down to the present time he discussed the various kinds of cement bringing out the strong arguments in favor of portland cement as surpassing all others on the market with the aid of a general plan of a cement plant and numerous cata logues mr slifer explained the process of manufacture from the quarry to the consumer if an examination of the specimens which he brought along showing the various stages of manufacture proved very interesting each member present was the recipient of a souvenir in the form of a cement match holder the compli ments of the portland cement co tempting refreshments were then served all else was forgotten with the exception of voting dr and mrs drinker the best of hosts the absence of mrs drinker who was ill was keenly felt by all tau beta pi last evening the following seniors were initiated into the society of tau beta pi havenstein jenn ings bellis hoppock garrison goedeeke zollinger struble har vey corbin agthe porter heil man small mcentireand eidgely the initiation banquet was held afterwards at the american hotel bethlehem about forty men were in attendance the second monthly meeting of the electrical society was held in the physical laboratory last wed nesday at 7.30 p m president garrison presided and the routine business was transacted bason 09 as musical leader requested that all men who play string instruments should report to him as the society wishes to form a musical club to play at the spiels continued on third page the papers were especially inter esting on the flaming arc lamp robert p nichols cornell 06 described the development and manufacture of this instrument since its invention since gradua tion mr nichols has been employed by the herring arc light company of philadelphia this firm being one of the largest arc light manufac turers in this country the lamp consists of two carbons inclined so as to meet in a point at the bottom below their meeting point us a crucible filled with a salt which is voli tali zed into a vapor by the heat of the arc so that in place of burn ing in air it burns in a salt vapor different salts are used under different conditions and there are various regulating devices connect ed to the lamp these lamps are very efficient and produce about six times as much light as the ordinary arc with the same amount of power mr nichols brought a lamp with him and demonstrated its ability f t leilich 07 spoke on the oscillograph and its uses the oscillograph is a device for indica as on all other days this week lehigh had secret practice wed nesday afternoon thanks to the kindness of coach bull and the muhlenberg team a spirited practice game between lehigh and muhlen berg was held the game was in reality a 45 minute scrimmage dur ing which lehigh managed to score six times it is claimed by the coach s that this practice was the most spirited held so far and that the men showed up in better form wednesday than ever before this season 1910 epitome will iams po rt cl ub there was a meeting of the 1910 epitome board in drown hall wednesday afternoon progress was reported and new plans discuss ed it is the wish of the board that all who desire to enter in the literary and photographic contests submit their work at their earliest opportunity there will be an important meet ing of the lehigh williamsport club in drown hall sunday at 2 p m the monthly meeting of the arts and science club was held in saucon hall thursday evening this being english night the program for the evening consisted of two papers dealing with the works of two english writers the first paper a review of the literary career of george mere dith by l p gilmoro mo dis cussed the work of this novelist who recently celebrated his eightieth birthday it was shown that in spiration and the cultured style exhibited in this man's work place him among the english writers of note the second paper the life of surrey by w h mecreary 11 brought out the excellence of the translations of the classics of this ante-shakespearian writer
