members speakers drawn from the rank of the local clergy again on sunday one of the most prominent of them bishop ethelbert talbot bishop of eastern pennsylvania has consent | ed to address the regular y m c a meeting to lehigh men bishop talbot needs no introduction he has been kind enough to address y m c a meetings for several years past and each year his talk has been the event of the year for the christian association aud through these talks he has made a warm place for himself in the esteem of the men who have heard him before drown hall was comple ted was customary for bishop chapel but with this beautiful new auditorium at its service the y m c a feels that drown hall is the fitting place for its meetings large and small and extends to its friends a most cordial invitation to be present at 6.30 sunday evening and participate in the privilege of hearing bishop talbot the basket ball practice last wednesday was snappy and the varsity team work was excellent but the shooting of field goals front easy chances is still weak the bucknell team is no easy mark for although their captain o'brein is the only old man on this year's team they have a freshman who is considered a wonder at playing the game the team as a whole will give us a good hard game and we need all our rooters to help us gain another victory besides the regu lar varsity team the following men were out for practice wednes day waltz cook merkel leslier rebert mccoy butler avolfe matthews r osbourne and over mandolin club pennsylvania intercol legiate track association there will be a very important meeting of the mandolin club in mining society the college lecture scheduled for today on pearl culture and pearl fisheries by dr charles h stevenson 90 has been postpou d owing to the sudden death of dr stevenson's father the meeting of the mining socie ty which was to be held on wed nesday february 10 has been postponed one week in order that an outside speaker may be present . the february meeting will be de voted to metallurgy drown hall saturday at 3 p m tt is desired that all the members be present as a new leader is to be elected to succeed laggard who has left college regular practice will follow the election violin recital correction j g shaw manager of the track team attended the meeting of the pennsylvania intercollegiate track association which was held at harrisburg on jan 30 it was decided to hold an intercollegiate track meet at harrisburg on satur day may 29 as was done last year the field is furnished by the harrisburg association together with trophies for the men who take the first tnree places in each event members of the harrisburg alum ni club are very desirous that le high be represented by as large and as strong a team as possible prof a e meaker was nominat ed for burgess of bethlehem at the recent primary elections of the prohibition party prof barry mac nutt is also a candidate for burgess of fountain hill on the citizen's ticket j.ross corbin 09 and john thompson of philadelphia were heard in a joint violin and piano recital in the moravian seminary chapel on thursday evening the several numbers were en thusiastically received by the rep resentative audience of bethle hem's music-loving people in at tendance corbin has been study ing violin for 1.7 years while mr thompson is a student of orchestra tion under dr clarke of the uni versity of pennsylvania and is considered one of the leading pianists of the quaker city both young men were heartily con gratulated on their splendid per formance masonry piers and concrete floor construction for bridges by l c zollipger 09 by richard k meade chemist dexter portland cement company mr meade first stated some in teresting facts about the yearly output of cement in the united states saying the portland cement industry of the united states is second only to the fuel industry in the line of non-metallic productions the united states is first of all countries in the world in the production of both quality and quantity of cement the germans heretofore outclassing us are now forced to use american machinery in production to compete with us if of the yearly production of cement in the united states were built a sidewalk twenty-five feet wide it would entirely encircle the globe it would make a cube one fifth of a mile on a side all of the cement v a v the construction of the panama canal is only one-tenth of the yearly output of this coun try there are one hundred and twenty-live companies together producing fifty-two million barrels in 1907 the industry began in the early eightes and production has been rapidly increasing since then the atlas is the largest company in the world producing twenty thousand barrels daily there are twenty-three plants in pennsylvania cement is made from cement rock and limestone and the general steps in the order of manufacture are as follows : — quarrying of rock mixing with limestone crushing and pulverizing burning to clinkers and grinding with gypsum a simple practical rule for analysis of cement is that the lime shall equal twice the silica plus the alumina plus the calcium carbonate a standard test for fineness is that ninety-two per cent of mixture shall pass a one hun dred mesh sieve when ready for burnmg formerly a high grade gypsum was attained from nova scolia at a cost of from eight to nine dollars per ton but since a process has been discovered whereby the home gypsum of new york chiefly may be used at a cost of only four dollars per ton the present sources of supply of raw materials in cement production will outlast the sources of fuel a low estimate of the former being one hundred and fifty years gyratory crushers are almost ex clusively used and from these the crushed material goes to the dryers if damp or directly to fires if dry from the quarries the stone is usually carried to the plant by gravity cars and throughout the plant the material is all mechan wife and two daugh ters he spent some of his time inspecting metallurgical and chemi cal industries of northern italy he was in rome at the time of the messina earthquake mrs rich ards and her daughters will remain in florence and will not return un til this spring there will bo a mustard and cheese rehearsal on saturday after noon at 2 o'clock in drown hall and an election for business mana ger after the rehearsal a short article recently appeared in one of the phiadel phi a papers in regard to a project of some coal operators whereby college men might procure employment during
