certainty is an impossible task never before have there been as many teams which are con on page 4 col 6 saturday will mark the fin ale of lehigh's winter sports season the brown and white grapplers will tread the mat for the last time this season at the annual intercollegiates held at perm state college starting this afternoon and finishing to morrow afternoon the twen ty-eight preliminary bouts are scheduled for this afternoon the fourteen semi-finals tonight and the climax — the seven finals tomorrow afternoon the team left yesterday morning shortly after eight o'clock arriving at state college in the afternoon the personnel of the team is the same as that which con tested in the navy meet except that heilman and lewis have having competition from johns hopkins swarthmore and le high in the competition of 1925 rutgers held all first places except in the fancy div ing and back stroke this year the competition will still be manifest in the diving and in the breast stroke con on page 4 col 3 in the relay rutgers ran off with honors last year in the time of 1 43 the raritarians have succeeded in breaking the lehigh pool record by the time of 1:43 3-4 but have not as yet established a new league record swarthmore will have thompson as a strong contest ant in the fancy diving and will be met by curry of rut gers and hayes and hobbs of lehigh the 1926 intercollegiates of the eastern collegiate swim ming association will be held at taylor pool tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock at which time johns hopkins swarthmore lafayette lehigh and rutgers will vie for aquatic honors in dividual championships will be the featuring events of the af ternoon while team honors will have secondary signifi cance last year in the intercolle giates held at weightman pool at philadelphia rutgers cap tured first place in team hon ors and also succeeded in ob taining first place in the major ity of events it is expected that coach reilly's proteges will repeat the procedure this year students the third of a series of or gan recitals given by mr t edgar shields took place tues day evening in the packer memorial chapel on this oc casion mr shields was assisted by miss julia b la velle piano in a program of more than us ual interest the opening selection an overture in c minor formed a fitting introduction the work was of the typical organ style with massive movement for all voices in many places ending with an impressive finale the rhapsody for organ and piano by demarest present ed an effective contrast to the more solemn style of the over ture the piece was brilliant with many runs and arpeggios for the piano especially allow ing this instrument to stand out against the stronger organ miss la velle's playing was excellent in this as in the concerto after a quiet but beautiful andante cantabile by widor mr shields gave a short expla natory talk on the passacag lia perhaps the most famous composition of bach's next to his fugues the passacaglia was originally a slow dance in which the rhythm is markedly accented and in the organ ar rangement introduced by the bass of the pedal the full slow tempo was well brought by the performer con on page 3 col 5 should the alumni participate in college administration and if so to what extent this was the subject of a very interesting discussion at a meeting of the faculty educational club held on friday afternoon in the fa culty room of the alumni bldg the three speakers of the after noon gave their respective view points all of which were of a different nature because of the official position of each man walter r okeson secretary of the lehigh alumni association dr charles r richards and dr kinley president of the university of illinois were thej speakers con on page 2 col 3 mr okeson the first man to take the floor described the present object of the alumni secretaries throughout the coun try as being a desire to make the alumni as helpful to their alma mater as possible and to encourage the continuance of education among alumni after their graduation from college the attitude of the majority of the alumni at the present time is a willingness to help when they are needed but they will not take the initiative not much cooperation between alum ni and faculty can be expected at this time according to mr okespn the feeling of wm l phelps of yale typifies that of many of the older alumni at . dr ward is professor of applied christianity at union theol ogical seminary and for the past two years has devoted his time to visiting the larger stu dent centers of the east dur ing this period he has created considerable fame for himself as a lecturer at colleges dr ward is regarded as one of the most advanced thinkers of our time before coming to union seminary he was profes sor of sociology at boston uni versity and also conducted an open forum at ford hall bos ton not only is he known as an educator but as an author he is considered an authority on such subjects some of his most recent books are christianizing community life poverty and wealth and the labor move ment and likewise he has con tributed widely tp publications following his engagement in bethlehem dr ward is to lec ture at columbia perm state boston university and later is to conduct open forums in de troit dnd boston seniors notice in conjunction with the all around athletic meet to be held in the very near future there will be also an all around gym meet the following events to make up the schedule — three events each on the parallel bars horse buck rings high bars and tumbling also when weather permits the standing broad jump run ning broad jump hop - step - and jump buck vault running high jump bar vault high kick dive for distance and height batting ball for distance throw ing at target medicine ball running bases 100 yard dash one-quarter mile and mile runs and cross country walking drill posture foul shooting punting drop kicking forward passing accuracy and distance dribbling soccer ball and oth ers in regard to the cross coun try event this will be open to all men who are not on the var sity squad and will be held on a course which will be around the campus distance not to be more than three miles this run will be held in may and medals will be given to the winners this event should prove to be an extremely popular one for the distance is short and there is plenty of time to gain the condition necessary for the ev ent another similar meet is scheduled for next fall cow on page 3 col 2 the purpose of this entire in ter-mural system can readily be seen to be of distinct advantage to the students because outdoor playing space limits the activi ties of team work to the var sity teams consequently men that are cut from the squads have little opportunity to follow the sports in which they are particularly interested the above calendar of sports will do much to help out the combined musical clubs have again responded to a well earned public appeal for their services this time the people of the neighboring village of cat asauqua being the fortunate in dividuals in fact the bookings of the club locally are filled for the next month and a half where in previous years ar rangements were attempted with out success for concerts this year bids for services have come to the clubs without ef fort on their part so great was the success of last year and the early concerts of this year con on page 3 col 3 an appreciative audience of over three hundred was on hand to welcome the clubs on what is turning out to be an annual af fair with the graduating class of catasauqua high school the entire organization was on hand the amateur title of the le high valley in wrestling was decided last week in the south side high school gymnasium in one of the most successful ven tures of this kind ever held in bethlehem every class was spiritedly contested and some excellent wrestling was witness ed with practically the entire frosh team of lehigh entered the bleserman bethlehem unattached with a bar and chancery hold in 4:45 115-lb class writer of le high won by default 125-lb class writer of le high won fr»m maclarics beth lehem by a fall in two minutes gannon who drew a bye met writer in the final and writer won with a time advantage of 2 mm and 1 5 sec 135-lb class persbacker le high won from wiesner unat tached by a fall in five minutes in the finals borowski lost to persbacker by a fall with a bar and chancery hold in 3 mm 145-lb class evans un con on page 2 col 6 con on page 3 col 5 the wrestling intercolle giates being held at perm state this week-end are marked by drastic changes in the rulings that should aid materially to better the competition the two outstanding changes in the rules are the elimination of bouts to determine the third award and the legalizing of the double wrist hold each of these changes have been pending for some time but it was only this december that they were ap proved previous to this year when a wrestler lost out in his pursuit of a title he immediately engag ed in another bout to determine the second place and if he again lost out he was forced to fight a third bout very soon af terward this is too great a strain on a man who has been in severe competition and at the end of his second bout he is unable to do his best in rec ognition of this fact the rules have been so altered that the trials for third place have been discontinued and the award goes to the runner-up in the second place bouts the double wrist hold has for some time been considered ille gal in the east although in oth er sections of the country it has been allowed this has brought about a disadvantage when an eastern team meets a western team for the hold is perfectly legal in intercollegiate wrest ling in the west this was no ticeably evident in the olympic team trials where western men predominated due in no small measure to their proficiency in this hold for the first time this hold is to be allowed in the eastern intercollegiates this year and this step should place intersectional meets on a fair basis the alexander hamilton club held a meeting last monday eve ning at 7:30 o'clock in coppee hall a large number of the members were on hand to hear the very enjoyable program which had been planned this was the first meeting held since the new administration of of ficers for 1926 were installed ced smith presided as the new president of the club immediately after the meet ing was called to order by the president a short business meet ing was held the samples of charms suitable for the club were discussed but no decision was made and the matter was left undecided since more sam ples have been requested con on page 3 col 5 two enjoyable numbers were then given by williamson and seeley which were greatly en joyed by those present wil liamson's paper was on italy in ordering be prepared to pay in advance the last date is saturday march 27th seniors can order commence ment invitations and programs from any member of the invi tation committee — jimmy le van vie schwimmer or dune harris by taking the last game on their schedule against freeland on saturday the freshman bas ketball team wound up its sea son which although not as vic torious as their big brothers found it to have more than split even in the percentage of games won and lost out of a total of nine games played during the season five resulted in victories for the brown and white year lings while the other four found them on the small end of the score with the exception of two or three games the scores were very close and although the frosh ran up against very strong opposition in most of their contests they finished the season in a very creditable man ner out of the entire nine games played only two were staged at home the others taking place on foreign floors the season did not open until after christ mas and the first game was played on january 9 when the frosh met defeat at the hands of the strong defeat at the hands of the strong wyoming semin ary quintet on the latter's floor the yearlings displayed some of the best form of the year when they stopped the strong rutgers freshmen the following
