baseball lehigh was taken into camp last wednesday by the fast team rep resenting washington and jeffer son college the score was 3to 2 but it took ten exciting innings to decide it both pitchers were fast and had plenty of curves wolfram getting slightly the better of the argument and both were backed by almost perfect melding the pretti est catch of the season was contri buted by marshall the left fielder for w and j who in the fourth inning robbed heist of an almost sure hit by running backwards and making a lurch after the ball as it seemed certain to land untouched he rolled completely over but came up grasping the sphere for which feat he was heartily applauded w and j started the run mak ing in the first kennedy the first man up pushed out a nice single and was advanced one when wol fram served four wide ones to hanson duffy's out advanced both runners and kennedy scored on marshall's long drive to center field post was an easy out heist to anderson lehigh went out in order in her half of the first after wolfram had struck the first two men out in the second brush secured his base on balls and scored on singles by henniug and kennedy uptegraff opened lehigh'shalf of the second with a scorching single and promptly pilfered second anderson was safe on duffy's error and following the good example set by his captain also drifted in to the second cushion heist got his base on balls and then sterner appeared at the bat picking out one to his fancy he stung it into the left garden uptegraff and an derson both scoring on the hit with heist on second and sterner perched on first things looked promising eose was an easy out at first this ended the scoring until the tenth in the fifth eighth and ninth w and j got men as far as second but they died there owing to wol fram's good pitching during this time lehigh got several men to third but the effective pitching of henning nipped in the bud all chances to score stewart w and j started the tenth by getting to second on a bad throw by rose and going to third on brush's hit brush was forced by henning but kennedy drove stewart in with the winning run a nice single to the left with one down heist started lehigh's half of the inning by driving one to third which hauson could not handle the hit counting for two bases sterner was hit with the ball and with two on bases the chances looked bright for at least tying the score but henn continued on third page the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa fbi day may 21 1909 electrical society m e society final meeting and elections vol xvi good attendance mining society election of officers the annual spiel of the mechani cal engineering society was held on tuesday night in williams hall a large crowd including m e freshmen was present klar 09 chairman of the society's representatives appointed to in vestigate the possibilities of publish ing a technical journal at lehigh included in his report the reading of the by-laws and constitution to govern the management of the pro posed publication the same being unanimously adopted it was also decided to affiliate with the ameri can society of mechanical engineers on invitation from that body the election of next ye»r's officers resulted as follows — president neisen'lo vice-president schaffer 10 secretary hess 10 treasurer moncrieff,'lo librarian haas ll senior editor hess lo junior editor haas ll mr howarth gave a decidedly interesting talk on the " heat treatment of steel and alloys he told about the production of steel the different methods of tem pering the method of cooling and what temperature is best to harden steel so that a fine grained steel may be obtained he explained fully how the grain of steel is an important part in the strength of the piece produced and illustra ted these points by a large number of specimens in taking up the sub ject of alloys he explained the in fluence of nickel vanadium and chromium on th c physical properties of steel schwenk 09 gave a very practical talk on signal en gineering from the manual opera tion of the levers to the adoption of electric manipulators he also explained the working of the inter locking devices used by various railroads fees hm ex elections the election of officers of the class of 1912 was held in the physi cal laboratory on wednesday noon and resulted in the selection of the following men to serve dur ing the sophomore year — presi dent j a hart vice president m i terwilliger secretary e e take treasurer t p harris historian w j mawhinney athletic eepresentative w l heist marshall e w cook the class decided to have a cap cremation and mcguire hart and trexler were appointed to make the necessary arrangements . ~+ the organization of the 1911 epitome board resulted as follows editor in chief john l becker ; business manager donald e lowry art editor arthur wells assistant editor in chief frank s borden ; assistant business manager fred e galbraith the last miner's meeting of the year was held in williams hall on wednesday night among the reports from the committees was that of the poster committee awar ding the prize of a miner's pin to leon wittgenstein for the best poster e c smith the treasurer of the society reported the finances in a very good condition the results of the elections for the next year were as follows president e c smith 10 ; vice president j t eees 10 ; secre tary a i bryant 10 treasurer w e fairhurst 11 ; editor of lehigh engineer h p smith 10 assistant editor of lehigh engin eer g r wood 11 librarian n m downs 10 president callen made a report for the committee appointed to consider the project of an engineer ing paper the report was very favorable and the constitution as presented by the committee was accepted . f m hamilton the first speaker gave a very interesting talk concerning his experience in bisbee arizona while relating the various incidents with which he met mr hamilton told of the methods of working the mines and of the general labor conditions in that country perhaps the most interesting part was his description of the various jokes perpetrated on the green college man the town is situated in a valley and on the sides of four steep hills a d bryant 10 followed with a talk on the same subject mr bryant first told of his experiences in getting from st louis by the means he could on arriving he found the town filled with nearly two hundred and fifty college men in their earnest desire for ex perience these men were taking any kind of jobs they could get regardless of their ability to hold them . mr callen spoke on the subject of paint ore deposits at lehigh gap one of the largest deposits is being worked the ochre is blasted out by dynamite dried and finely pulverized after this it is sifted to remove the grit aud the iron oxide is used for various kinds of paints a large number of mines have been operated be tween bethlehem and beading but most of them are now abandoned mr callen expressed the belief that there are many valuable de posits in this vicinity which have not yet been developed dr drinker in a lew words told of the very great good which may be obtained from attendance at the meetings of the engineering soeities the may meeting of the electri cal engineering society was held in the physical laboratory on tues day the 18th at 7.30 p m this was the last meeting of the year and as usual the freshmen electricals attended . a fter a busi ness meeting in which d m petty read the report of the lehigh engineer committee the election of officers was held this resulted as follows — president w w broadbent vice-president william lewis secretary h m fry treasurer t o beitzel advisor prof wm esty senior editor lehigh engi neer a j standing junior edi tor lehigh engineer j stair the only paper of the evening was by r p heller heller showed that instead of living on the convex side of a ball that we inhabit the concave side of a hollow sphere theseconclusions were arrived at from a series of ex periments performed on the west coast of florida sets of lev el p were taken on the sea-coast and these with refractive behavior of light as demonstrated when passing through mediums of different den sities provided the data for mathe matical calculations inside of this sphere are the sun moon and planets the apparent sinking of a ship over the horizon and the eclipse of the sun and moon were fully explained all questions asked were clearly answered how ever no one was fully convinced by his argument eefreshments were served and several selections were rendered by the band and by bason and mun ter on the banjo the meeting adjourned at a late hour bishop talbot the last y m c a meeting of the year promises to be one of the best bishop ethelbert talbot who gave so interesting a talk once before this season has been kind enough to consent to speak again on sunday evening his reputation as a speaker an eminent church man and his interest in the associa tion proven by repeated services to it all combine to make bishop talbot a most appropriate speaker to close this year for the christian association the y m c a takes pride in the fact that all its speakers have proven both interes ting and helpful and feels that it is most fortunate to close the year with a man of bishop talbot's popularity and eminence as a further attraction to make this last meeting most attractive special music has been provided mr c l taylor e m 76 spent part of tuesday and wed nesday with dr drinker lehigh 2 w and j 3 snappy ten inning battle no 56
