thomas m eynon 81 will deliver a lecture on the question is the sun a ball of fire mr eynon does not believe that it is and his views were set forth in the phila delphia press of october g there will be a meeting of the le high-mercersburg club at the kappa sigma house 745 delaware aye south bethlehem on sunday nov 17 at 2 p m mercersburg club an invitation is especially extend ed to all freshmen who are eligible to attend this meeting as matters of importance will be discussed college lecture mr wood is the head of the de partment of experimental physics at johns hopkins university one of the salient points of the dis course was the assertion of prof wood that in the near future we shall see aeroplanes performing in the air not for commercial purposes perhaps but undoubtedly for sporting and pleasure purposes in taking up the subject of flying machines the speaker gave three chief classifications as follows bal loons aeroplanes and screw propell ers he dealt most extensively with the second type since they have proved themselves most practical tracing the growth of the airship during the last twenty years by means of fine stereoptican views prof wood pointed out the chief ex perimenters along these lines and gave a brief account of their work the dirigible balloon which has been perfected by military officers was commented upon at length the lec ture closed with an explanation of flying machines from the standpoint of physics laboratory the pieces of curved wood hurled with no mean force by the experimenter soared speedily through the air turned n their course and to the astonishment of the audience came back to their starting place in some cases directly in front of prof wood a feature which made the presence of prof wood doubly attractive while not closely connected with his main subject was his exhibition of boomerang throwing on the athletic field adjournment to which spot ook place immediately following the close of his talk in the physical of unusual interest was the lecture by mr r w wood lest friday morn ing on the live topic of modern air ships and flying machines much favorable comment was elicited both from the students and the large num ber of townsfolks who were fortu nate to see and hear the illustrated talk by prof r a wood of johns hopkins new york alumni the new york alumni met for an informal dinner at mouquin's 149 fulton street on thursday night about sixty of the old lehigh men \ were present and spent a very pleas | ant evening the club decided to hold another informal gathering of a similar nature within a month a p smith 84 president of the new york club acted as toastmas ter dr drinker was the first to be called upon and in a brief address he spoke of many matters of interest to the alumni while the student body is smaller this year on account of advanced requirements the fac ulty is larger than ever before a comparison which shows that high efficiency is being held above mere numbers the percentage of paying students in the university is larger than heretofore he then touched upon the success of the dormitories and commons the progress of drown hall and many other questions af fecting the life of the undergraduate at lehigh such as student regula tion of hazing and the attitude of the trustees toward the building of fraternity houses on the campus this he said is one of hospitality and welcome and of appreciation for what the fraternities have done in the past in housing and caring for the student body dr drinker's re marks were rceived with the enthu siasm which they always arouse at alumni gatherings prof mansfield merriman followed dr drinker and what he said was largely reminiscent of his long per iod of service at lehigh a letter from 0 l taylor 76 was then read expressing his regret at not being able to attend the meet ing short speeches were made by the following members of the club dr henry r price 70 f w sar gent 79 h f j porter 78 j t morrow 89 dr c e webster 98 e j prindle 90 george lighten 88 w l fairchild 90 and d a usina 91 mr morrow seemed deep ly interested in the question of al lowing fraternity houses on the cam pus and although himself a member of one he stated that he was against any such proposition as undemo cratic and tending to foster cliques rather than the promotion of broad college spirit and loyalty this aroused considerable discussion and the general consensus of opinion seemed to be that the trustees should be slow in adopting any policy in the matter
