pass brumbaugh and aman each gained 4 but on the third play la fayette held mccaa's kick was re covered by lafayette on our 50-yd line speirs and mccaa again ex changed kicks with the result that lafayette had the ball 35 yards away from our goal west troutman broke through and threw flad for a loss of 10 yards when he attempted a forward pass with a long distance to gain flad used an on-side kick which went al most straight across the field north speirs picked it up and tore away for a great 65-yd run leaving behind all the lafayette men who tried to catch him then came the most in explicable move in the whole game after allowing all the spectators as well as the members of the two teams to believe tnat the touchuowin was legal head linesman bennett slowly sauntered down the field and just about the time that anderson was ready to bring the ball out for the attempt at goal he notified the referee that lehigh had been off-side at first he stated that it was trout man who had committed the offense and then transferred the accusation to bakewell but when asked to pick out the latter he pointed to olcott no matter who was guilty if anyone was the decision was altogether un expected and no objection had been made to the play by the lafayette team who had lined up between their goal posts alter some discussion the ball was brought back and from then on slowly but surely the tide of the game turned from lehigh to lafay ette not that our men gave up the struggle for even after this it ap peared probable that we might carry the ball for a touchdown this de cision however permitted lafayette to continue on the defensive a very advantageous position in a game like saturday's the eastonians were re quired to take no risks but to merely wait for lucky opportunities such as those which gave mccaa and chal mers chances to score lafayette's other two touchdowns viewing the game as a whole this decision count ed more for lafayette than the play ing of any man on her team after the ball had been recalled the same play was repeated by la fayette and speirs had another chance to reproduce his long run but unfortunately stumbled and fell a forward pass to troutman gained 20 yards taking us to lafayette's 45 yd line a first down followed through the good work of aman and brumbaugh a forward pass was lost to lafayette on her 20-yd line but a punt by mccaa was brought back to within 5 yards of this position after a 6-yd gain by aman a for ward pass was tried but failed and as mccaa immediately punted an derson was downed on his own 45-yd line again a forward pass failed and anderson was unable to secure mccaa's kick before chalmers who had an easy chance for a touchdown goal kicked by chalmers score 16 to 5 street was sent in to replace black and mandell took aman's place speirs kick-off was low and rolled to lafayette's 1-yd line where chalmers was downed mcoaa punt ed out of danger to anderson six yards by olcott and a forward pass gave us another first down lafay ette's ball on a forward pass and then ours at the middle of the field mandell and brumbaugh made a first down on two plays wood was sub stituted for bakewell who was in jured and gained 6 yards for the third time in succession the forward continued on page four football team defeated but not outplayed speirs goes 65 yards for a touchdown which is not allowed bakewell made touch down after shorkley had blocked mccaa's punt to have outplayed their opponents to a great extent and yet to have lost by the score of 22 to 5 was the fate of the football team on satur day the game was entirely differ ent from other lehlgh-lafayette con tests for many years in that our team excelled individually and collectively with the exception of kicking where mcoaa's work was all that saved lafayette from defeat in the second half two or three times during this period our backs forced their way to within striking distance of the lafayette goal and although we lost the ball each time it was only mccaa's wonderful punting often from behind his own line that pre vented us from scoring our entire line without exception showed its superior ability both in attack and defense not a single one of our kicks was blocked by the lafayette linemen while three times our men broke through and prevent ed the successful execution of a kick the most notable difference in form in our favor was between the two pairs of ends and especially during the first half was it impossible for the lafayette backs to return the ball any distance after a kick before being downed that lafayette failed to make any gains around them was another proof of their ability no team this season has been capable of piercing our line and lafayette was no exception to this rule the work of our backfield also de serves commendation brumbaugh often hit the lafayette line for five to fifteen yards and the halfbacks also made substantial gains in de fense the three showed great form in strengthening our line anderson at quarter used good judgment in run ning the team and although badly bruised from the way in which the lafayette forwards seemed to center their attack upon him after a punt he put up a strong and gritty game until the end the crowd at the game was the largest since 1903 numbering at least 8,000 and great enthusiasm was displayed by the partizans of the two teams three uands were pres ent to liven up matters and there was no reason to be ashamed of the music furnished by our own aggre gation first half at 2.35 speirs kicked off to con over who was downed on the 25-yd line lafayette was unable to gain and mccaa kicked to anderson but on the next play speirs fumbled kirkpatrick securing the ball flad then tried a forward pass which an derson broke up but lafayette re gained the ball on our on-side kick chalmers made eight yards but on the second play afterward we got the ball on a fumble speirs kicked and bakewell downed conover on our 45-yd line mccaa soon punted to anderson who carried back the ball ten yards a gain of eight yards t)y aman and speirs punted to flad who returned the ball to our 20-yd line westerbeke was here disqual ified and lafayette given half the distance to our own goal on the second play after this lee crossed the line on a forward pass fifteen minutes from the start of the same chalmers kicked the goal lafayette again received the kick off and as it went over the line mccaa punted to anderson who was downed at the middle of the field lehigh then made two first downs on gains by brumbaugh and a for ward pass to troutman an off-side kick was tried and a penalty of 15 yards put lafayette on her own s yd line mccaa attempted to punt lout of danger but shorkley blocked jthe ball and bakewell fell on it i speirs failed to kick the goal speirs received the kick-off but a penatly of 15 yards forced him to ! punt conover was tackled by trout ! man and burlingame at the middle of the field a short kick by flad was anderson's on our 35-yd line another penalty and again flad was downed by troutman on lafay ' ette's 50-yd line the course of the play was then varied each team re sorting to kicking the work of our ' two ends was especially brilliant at i this time mccaa finally secured an attempted forward pass and was i thrown by troutman at the middle jof the field mccaa punted and the j ball was ours on our 30-yd line it i came into lafayette's possession | through a fumble by aman and flad tried for a field goal which was i blocked but recovered by lafayette again flad attempted a drop from the 10-yd line and lifted it over ! score 10 to 5 speirs kicked to lafayette and during the rest of the half the two teams were on even terms mccaa | was compelled to kick to anderson ; and brumbaugh and aman gained 10 ; yards for another first down just before the close of the half brum baugh blocked an attempted goal and it ended with the ball in our i possession on our 30-yd line second half the second half brought out a change of tactics on the part of lafayette being altogether unable to gain tnrough our line or around the ends mccaa was immediately sent back to punt nearly every time his team had the ball it was only in the last few minutes of play that any gains were made by lafayette on straight football during the first fifteen minutes of tne half there was apparently no stopping the lehigh team and its exhibition for this period was the best football seen on lehigh field for many a day the kick-off went to anderson and by clean dodging he carried it thirty yards to our 45-yd line after aman had made seven yards lafayette held but mcoaa kicked immediately an derson being dropped on the 35-yd line two forward passes to trout man and bakewell then succeeded for 15 and 7 yards respectively brumbaugh crashed through center for 15 more troutman recovered a i fumble but it was necessary for speirs to kick he secured the re turn punt on lafayette's 50-yd line and then brumbaugh worked a fake forward pass for half the distance to the goal he made another gain of 5 yards but conover captured an attempted forward pass on his own 6-yd line anderson returned mc caa's punt 10 yards but aycrl<*s broke up another forward pass and mccaa again kicked out of danger to lafayette's 40-yd line once more lehigh renewed the at tack on the opposing defense trout 1 man made
