hazelton a large number of the junior mining section in charge of prof eckfeldt and mr daniels enjoyed an inspection trip to the mines of the lehigh valley coal company near hazleton the latter part of last week the party left south bethlehem for flazleton on friday afternoon and spent all saturday morning and a portion of the af ternoon at the mines wednesday january 15 bas ketball practice at 2.00 lacrosse at 2.30 gym at 4.00 minstrel as sociation spiel at karl's at 8.00 thursday january 16 athletic committee monthly meeting at 4.00 in the faculty room fourth number of y m c a lecture course by george kiernan in phys lab at 8.00 arcadia at 7.30 christmas hall friday january 17 college lecture in phys lab at 11.30 by dr r w raymond saturday january 18 team practices at regular times as above gun club at 2.15 fifteenth anniversary on jan uary 24 the philadelphia lehigh club has made very extensive plans for the celebration of its fifteenth an niversary on january 24th at the university club 15 10 walnut ] st the committee in charge has ! secured the best high class vaude iville and has prepared an elabo rate menu for the occasion robert is perry 88 is chairman and moriz bernstein 96 treasurer of this committee the following is a list of some of the distinguished guests who have been invited : dr drinker charles l taylor 76 rt rev ethelbert talbot warren a wil bur of the board of trustees ; prof c l doolittle of the univ of pennsylvania ; prof f p mc ; kibben the presidents of the : pittsburgh new york north east and central pennsylvania alumni j clubs coach dickson f s itavens yale 96 f r dravo 87 g w snyder 85 charles straw 93 and t allerdice 83 mr a h lewis 95 district superintendent conducted the party on the trip through the breaker and underground work ings one of the features was the large pumps with a 3,500-gal lon per minute capacity located at the bottom of the mines and fourth number on thursday night the concluding number of one of the best courses that the y m c a has offered in recent years will be given on thursday night by george kiernan mr kiernan will impersonate one of joseph jefferson's most famous charac terization that of bob acres in the rivals this play with the cricket on the hearth by dickens and rip van winkle were the three to which jefferson's later years on the stage were con fined the actor's personal permission was given for the preparation of mr kiernan's presentations of his plays and he himself showed great interest in them the hearty ap proval of audiences which knew and loved the gentle actor places their value beyond question this will be the last of the four entertainments and since the weather was so extremely un pleasant at the time of hon champ clark's lecture last week and the audience necessarily small every one who is able should take college lecture dr rossiter w raymond sec retary of the american institute of mining engineers will deliver a lecture next frklay morning in the physical laboratory on ge ology and its influence upon history dr raymond received the honorary degree of ll.d from lehigh in 1906 and was one of the speakers at the time of breaking sod for drown memor ial hall pumping the water 550 feet to the surface on account of the char acter of the coal found in the dis trict the breaker is one of the best example of modern coal dressing y m c a mr e e bohner of dickin son and state secretary of the i association gave a very interest ing talk on sunday evening the i sharp thunder storm just before the meeting caused a small at tendance mr bohner based his remarks on the passage of scrip ture if any man hath ears let class book election a meeting of the senior class was held in saucon hall on fri day to complete the selection of a class book committee of the three men who had each received the same vote at the former elec tion c c shorkley and r d bell were chosen the other mem bers of the committee are broth ers finnic heck sanderson and thomas a meeting for organiza tion will be held during this week and all preliminary business will be attended to as early as possible him hear he spoke of all the natural powers with which we have been endowed and which de velop with use if we fail to use a faculty it will decay just as truly as we have a natural keenness of hearing so do we also possess a spiritual keenness which if neglected will cause us to hear only the bad and vicious but if cultivated we will hear all that is true and pure similarly using the sense of sight as an illustra tion so many men are falsely blind who look only toward the dark side instead of honestly looking forward to the light 1909 epitome owing to the fact that the 1909 epitome will be issued one month earlier than usual april 1 slips containing the data for the senior class roll must be filled out by the 1908 men this week the slips have been placed at the gag box in packer hall and should be de posited in that receptacle those whose names and honors have not been registered by next sat urday'noon will be entered in the book according to the file in the university office all new clubs or organizations which desire to have inserts in the epitome should communicate at once with any of the editors the harrisburg park commis sion will offer gold silver and bronze medals at the state inter collegiate track meet to be held there on may 30 the medals will bear the harrisburg coat-of-arms with bas-relief figures showing john harris the founder of the city welcoming an athlete in ad dition a silver loving cup will be awarded to the college winning the meet we expect to print the roster of examinations in the friday is sue for this week dean corsa 05 was in town for a few days last week he is located at austenville va with the new jersey zinc co e w peters 09 expects to leave college at the end of this term and take examinations at washington for a second lieu tenancy in artillery in addition to the list of new periodicals zeitschrift fur praktische geologic the northern new york le high club will hold a smoker at schnectady early in february j w kellog 84 is president and a s kapella 95 is secretary of this division of the alumni the minstrel association will hold a meeting and spiel at karl's on wednesday night january 15 special summer school arrangements are now under way for a special summer school this year for the present jnior miners it is proposed to take the section to the iron and copper re gions of michigan and minnesota immediately after work ends in june this trip replacing the regu lar summer school the mines in the marquette mesabi and ver million ranges of the iron district and also a large number of cop per mines including the famous calumet and hecla will be vis ited the financial question is the de termining factor in such an ex tensive trip and as yet its cer tainty and the number who will go are undecided prof eckfeldt and mr daniels will probably have charge of the party in case the successful shoot on the athletic field last saturday af ternoon about twelve of them participated and although none of the scores were very high the shoot was a good beginning
