baseball lehigh defeated by lafayette in a poorly played game 8-0 a defeat by the score of 8 to 0 rep resents the results of a game at eas ton on saturday that was served up to lafayette on a platter garnished with the green playing and mistakes of the team and coach errors and slow fielding hard luck a sudden change of pitchers before the game the slippery and soggy condition of the grass diamond and the inability to hit schneider were the determining factors in the contest a fairly large crowd of lehigh supporters were on hand to cheer the team along and they did their duty well even after defeat was crtain coach garry had at first selected serfass to do the twirling but a few minutes before the umpire called play he unexpectedly changed to flippen bcause the former's arm was some what score this came as a complete were more due to its unsettling alike as it was a very risky experi ment to start a freshman pitcher in one of the most important games of the season on strange grounds .> the evil effects of this sudden substitution were more due to its unsettling influence upon the remainder of the team than any fault of flippen s for with any kind of support his showing would have been far better in our half of the first uptegraff walked but was caught at second for lafayette kelly singled schnei der bunted in the air to flippen conover laid down another toward third that boyer fielded cleanly but slipped on the grass before he could throw it to first and swank repeated the same performance with flippen this filled the bases but on the next play flippen threw kelly out at the plate with two disposed of peters drove a grounder to galbraith and morsack dropped the throw that should have retired the side allowing conover and swank to cross the plate the second inning was even worse than the first anderson singled but never got beyond first base edwards the first man up for lafayette secur ed a clean hit rut kelly avas an easy out at first and schneider fanned again there were two down conover rapped out a single scoring edwards and swank knocked another to up tegraff who threw high to mcmurtrie and while the latter was attempting to stop the ball he collided head on with conover and both were laid out for a minute or two in the resulting confusion swank reached home on the ground rule regarding that base still another run came in when long walked went to third on galbraith's error of mcmurtrie's throw and tal lied on an error by rose thus it is very plain that of the six runs scored not more than one would have result ed with reasonably reliable fielding flippen remained in the box for one more inning in which lafayette's lead was increased by another run due to a free pass to matson and a poor throw to catch him at the plate continued on page 4 with the fourth inning came a change in pitchers serfass replacing fllppen and thereafter things 1 went with a score of 7 to 0 against us and its discouraging influences schneider's pitching was considerably more effec tive than if both teams had been on an oven basis as it was only seven lehigh men reached first and none got as far as second anderson seemed to be the only one who could solve schneider but all of the team except uptegraff galbraith sterner and serfass fanned at least once the baseball game with lafayette which has been twice postponed will be played on june d at 4 p
