meeting of the wash ington club wednesday nov 7 1.30 p m brown and white board picture 2.00 p m minstrel show rehear sal at christmas hall 2.30 p m lacrosse practice , thursday nov 8 8.00 p m arcadia club meeting friday nov 9 1 1 00 a m col lege meeting saturday nov 10 3.00 p m football lehigh vs n y u at south bethlehem a successful and well attended college smoker was held last fri day evening in the gymnasium at which much college spirit was aroused the entertainment was varied and consisted of a sopho more-freshman basket-ball game an exhibition of weight-liftingf < clog dancing songs wrestling and j boxing about half-past eight president i carlock of the senior class started the smoker by leading the college in three good lehigh's and then i announced the basket ball game the freshmen started off with a rush and within a few minutes gardner 10 scored the first goal up to this time it looked as if the freshmen would overwhelm the sophomores but the latter took a brace and soon campbell 09 made the first goal for his team the contest raged hot from then on and it was with difficulty that w stobaeus 09 and keife scored for their team the first half then ended with the score 2-6 in favor of the sophomores between the halves mr h levy did some clever clog dancing and was well applauded in the second half of the basket ball game the sophmores ran away from the freshman and scored 13 points to the freshmen's two campbell 09 quickly scored and dayett 09 followed with a free throw and then a goal bertschy 10 then made the last goal for his team after this dayett 09 and w stabaeus 09 scored and kiefe ended the scoring with two goals to his credit in rapid succession both teams put up good games but showed their lack oi practice in their frequent failure to make easy ! goals a good exhibition of weight lifting was given by mr jollier with a 95 pound dumb-bell manager draper of the foot ball team led three lehighs and spoke briefly about supporting the team at the dickinson game the university quartette com posed of bill stair kid reel runt smith and swope followed with continued on page three minstrel show a meeting of the washington club for the purpose of reorgani zation was held last monday night at the sigma nu house the new constitution was read and adopted and the following men elected offi cers : archibald 07 president ; bayard 07 vice-president ; hulse 07 treasurer ; thompson i 09 secretary the club intends to hold six regular meetings in the ensuing year all of which are to be of a social nature one of these is to be held in washington during the christmas vacation when the club intends to give either a box party or a dance all men who have " prepped " in washington are eligible to mem bership as the primary objects of the club are to promote a closer friendship between the men at lehigh from washington and the interests of lehigh in the capital city it is desired that all such men should take an interest in the club future meetings will be an nounced the regular sunday evening meeting of the y m c a was ad dressed by mr karmoff a grad uate from the university of color ado he based his remarks on a portion of the sixth chapter of paul letter to the ephisians mr karmoff said that there is no man better fitted to direct those burdened by the cares of life than paul a man who conquered both the lusts of the world and that en emy of all enemies self men have been able to control armies who could not control armies who could not control self but paul by his perserverance rose from a self cen tered life to a life ofpureness clean liness holiness he might be com pared to a snow capped mountain which rises from bleak barren sur roundings to heights majestic it pays to keep at it in the battle of life as paul did the foot ball player who never breaks train ing but aims to attain physical per fection realizes this fact too many men enter life as some foot ball players ; they break training i before the real conflict has come there is a constant demand for men of the opposite sort men who will stand by their convictions men who ' have back bone and moral cour tage very oiten thoughtlessness envy jealousy and snap-judgement have been the means of plunging men into moral wrecks and rendering i the unhappy victims hopeless throughout eternity such unfor tunates after they have fallen short of god's requirements too fre quently brood over the past and forget the future perhaps the best advice for such a one is to take thought for his future for in the words of the poet to think is to live on to live to love is immortality a problem has arisen in college life which it is the province of the y m c a to solve it is the pro micious habit of untruth why it should exist is a mystery but its fruits are plainly evident ; its offen siveness needs no explanation it is sufficient to say that if colleges are to graduate the type of men the world demands this habit must be curbed honesty must over continued on second page on sunday ofternoon at 3 o'clock thore was an important meeting of the minstrel show can didates at the delta upsilon house there were about thirty men pres ent and the songs were rehearsed the singing showed a great im provement over that of previous rehearsals and considering the ex cellent quality of the songs selected a successful show will be the result on next wednesday afternoon there will be an important rehearsal in christmas hall for end men vol xiv south bethlehem pa tuesday november 6 1906 lehigh university y m c a college smoker calendar no 14 the brown and white foot ball lehigh puts up a strong game against dickison enthusiastic smoker and pa rade for dickinson game saturday's game with dickinson was the fastest and best game of foot ball seen here this year the honors were about equally divided dickinson had a somewhat heavier team but lchigh made up in quick ness and energy the whole team showed an improvemeut simply re markable every man played his position well and hard trout man and bakewell played a star defensive game speirs and law yer were our best ground gainers davis played the whole game for dickinson both offensive and de fensive the game was a kicking i game in which neither side had the advantage the new rules caused a number of penalties to be im \ posed on both sides lehigh was ! penalized a total of 50 yards and dickinson 45 yds first half speirs kicked off to davis who immediately punted back to wig ton the first scrimmage resulted in a fumble but westerbeke fell on ! the ball speirs gained 5 yds but dickinson held and lawyer was ' forced to punt davis received ' the punt but was downed in his tracks by troutman davis made 1 5 yds lehigh held them and davis kicked to speirs who return ed the ball 20 yds lehigh was !
