the epitome the epitome board has the work of collecting statistical records and data well in hand and it is time for the college in general to come to a realization of its duty in this con nection a special effort will be made from now on to secure the best possible literary and artistic matter and any member of the i board will gladly furnish informa tion as to the prizes offered and the kind of work required original verse with illustrative sketches will be especially accept able as well as humorous and seri ous stories this sort of material is what makes the book enjoyable and a good quality of work is needed to bring this year's epitome up to the standard of former publications gags and applied quotations are also greatly in demand the repre sentative wit and humor of the college should be reflected in this section of the book but if only the members of the board take the trouble to record funny episodes the desired results wilyl certainly not be attained as yet the gag methods are under consideration it has been decided to print the regular fraternity inserts instead of group pictures but one or two methods are under consideration and will soon be definitely an nounced the first call for candidates was issued wednesday and some fifteen men responded of whom a third were freshmen nearly all of last year's team is back so that the team has a good foundation on which to build the men who reported to the captain are as follows brown 07 moore l a o7 frankenfleld 07 ; donaldson 07 ; krause 07 trembly 09 raine 08 ; moore l d 07 ; young 09 ; gaston 09 thayer 10 gorman 10 gardner 10 johnson 10 the absence of mcdevitt who was doing excellent work on the side horse will be felt this year but the presence of moore who was out with a sprained back last year is a great satisfaction bayless does not expect to work this year because of a bad knee so the team loses a nervy candidate for the parallel bars brown the star of the team for two years past is ap parently in very good form of the new men nothing is as yet known excepting that gaston is reported to have been the instructor of our old man fernandez now at n y u which speaks promisingly for it is rather early to state definite ly about meets with other teams but a heavy schedule is expected with the prospect of a good season ahead it is deemed advisable to be gin practice next week hours for regular practice are as follows : tuesday 4to 5 p m wednes day 3 to 4.30 p m friday 4to 5 p m saturday 3to 4.30 p m for the first two or three weeks there will be no practice on friday men may practice individually at any time which suits their con venience e e society president isaac sharpless of haverford college was elected to the state house of representatives from delaware county john taylor a c 93 who spent about a week at his home in bethlehem has returned to his work with the st louis portland cement company st louis the foot ball team had a hard snappy practice on wednesday afternoon after getting down some new plays and running through a thorough signal practice the two teams lined up for a forty-minute scrimmage fulton ran the varsity and wigton the scrub neither lawyer nor spiers got in the line up aman and mandell playing the halves on the first team the two teams were pretty evenly matched and long runs by both sides were the features of the practice the scrub kicked off to the varsity but immediately got the ball on downs they soon resorted to a double pass play but troutman butted in and got the ball netting thirty yards for the varsity after several good gains aman took the ball on a fake kick and ran twenty five yards around the end for a touchdown the first team kicked off to archer who made twenty-five yards through nearly the entire team the ball changed hands several times for downs and finally wig ton punted the scrubs broke tip a double pass and got the ball they soon punted and fulton missed the ball anderson getting ' it and scoring a touchdown for the sec onds the scrubs kicked off and got the ball on a fumble 1 after a few more plays archer made the second team ? s second score on a brilliant one-yard run varsity kicked off to scrub who soon punted the regulars then ran the ball down to the two-yard line and fumbled it wigton pre pared a punt but fumbled and bakewell scored for the varsity soon after the next kick-off the first team again tried a double pass and lost the ball they regained it on a quarterback kick tried the same play and lost the ball once more soon after archer scored again for scrubs after a strenuous dash of two feet the varsity kicked off regained the ball on a punt but soon lost it and got it again on fumbles after a ten-yard gain by mandell aman ran fifteen yards for a touchdown after the next kick off the varsity pushed the ball straight down the field for another score this time by mandell on the second play after wednesday november 7 was municipal night fo rthe c e society a large crowd was in at tendance the meeting was called to order by president kent the treasurer's report showed a good balance in the treasury mcminn made an appeal for more posters to be submitted it was announced that w k howe chief engineer of the general signal co would read a paper on the installment of electric signals at the next meet ing december 5 which will be railroad signal night ■the first talk of the evening was by prof stewart on municipal administration of public works prof stewart gave a short history of the development of pepartments of public works in the large cities lie told of the problems to be solved and said the demand for municipal engineers was increasing it offers fine chances for men with the right idea of public service a very interesting paper on the connecticut avenue bridge washington d c was read by edward f peterson 08 this bridge consists of seven spans with a total length of 1341 feet it is constructed of concrete throughout with trimmings of concrete blocks imitations of granite that deceive any but the most expert observer a very interesting talk on city surveying and some of its phases was given by howard s bachman 08 the work refered to was in south bethlehem and was prepara tory to constructing vitulific pave ments on 3rd 4th broadway and wvandotte streets a talk on pavements in a third class city was given by mr conk lin he gave some very interesting statistics in regard to cost and con struction of pavements the city to which he referred has spent in the last eight years he said over an excellent feed engineered by jim meyers was then enjoyed 1 by all as were also the afters-dinner stories it called forth the meet ing which was indeed a most suc cessful one then adjourned the brown and white board pic ture was taken wednesday , after noon at mccaa's studio a meeting of the e e society will be held tuesday evening nov 13 1906 at 7.30 p m in the phy sics laboratory following papers to be read : some relations of the engineer to finance c e clewell e e electrolytic refining of cop per g xtk t reel the interpole motor a b grubmeyer refreshments gym team south bethlehem pa friday november 9 1906 c e society first call for candidates municipal night calendar no 15 the brown and white lehigh university wednesday's practic foot ball tol xiv saturday nov ioth 3 p m — football lehigh vs new york university on lehigh field sunday nov nth 6.30 p m — y m c a meeting in christmas hall monday nov 12th 5 p m — brown and white board meet ing tuesday nov 13th 9 p m — tau beta pi banquet at hotel wyandotte wednesday nov 14th 8 p ni — mining and geological society meeting in williams hall
