the regular sunday evening meeting of the y m c a was ad dressed by mr wilson secretary of the association at lafayette considering the inclement weather a very good number of men were out to hear mr wilson character was the subject of the speaker's talk he said that character is one of the prime factors of a man's life and on that account we cannot start too early to lay its i foundation the speaker brought out several causes which keep men from reach ing the heights of character first of these is the inordinate desire for popularity this desire which is so great that it will cause men to throw aside every scruple which is good in order to reach their end popularity is a good thing but if one had to do certain things which are detrimental to the building of his character in order to become popular then it is for the better for him to be unpopular than that his character should suffer a second thing which does not help charac ter building is not acting immedi ately if one has a stimulation to do something and doesn't do it then he will be a weaker man for his failure to follow his stimulation a third thing is not being ready for the time of testing it is not what we are at a particular moment but what we are today tomorrow or at all time that really counts the fourth and most important thing that forms an impediment to our character building is our failure to keep ourselves clean and pure as christian men we cannot afford to foul our minds with unclean pictures and foul stories but besides these things which act as a detriment to character there are certain things that we must do if we hope to build a strong character first we must devote a time to thinking that is we should look into our lives and find out what we really are we should also make frequent use of the bible ; which is god's most potent factor in helping men to build their char acter the greatest of all though in helping us in our fight is prayer we should pray not only at the continued
