engineer ing in lehigh university in 1881 and the development of that depart ment has been largely the result of his unceasing efforts about the first of december it occurred to his friends that some recognition should be made of the completion of so long a period of service and after a committee had been chosen an appeal was accordingly made to all m e graduates for the funds necessary to the for the operation of the dormitories and college commons lie said that there had been some in quiry in rgarcl to the policy of the university and that he desired it to be distinctly understood that these conveniences had been pro jected and were being built for the i comfort of those of the students who desired to use them that it would be wholly optional with a student whether he took a room outside of the dormitories or asked the privilege of living in them also whether he boarded outside or at the commons as the accom modation to be afforded by the lint dormitory now being built will be limited to about 140 men only a portion of the student body can at first be housed the commons will seat about 400 men and it is expected that the price of rooms at the dormitories and the minimum price of food at the commons can be fixed at figures to meet the means of all careful study has been made of the eating system at the state normal schools at kutztown and at west chester of the system at haverford college and at yale and harvard universities and the plan in practice at 1 ale and harvard will doubtless be adopted viz to furnish well-cooked substantial meals for a minimum price per week the student to be allowed to add to this by purchasing books of coupon checks which can be used as cash in paying for extras when desired the dormitories will have ample and convenient shower baths and the regular sunday meeting of the y m c a held in the chapel at 4 p m was addressed by mr franklin s edmonds a prominent lawyer of philadelphia mr ed monds is well known here at lehigh and a good crowd came to hear him mr edmonds based his remarks on an event that happened in the life of king joash just before the death of the prophet elisha the prophet had told the king to take an arrow and to smite the ground and rebuked him wjien he struck only three times for this was a sign that joash would deal three blows to the syrians and then stop thus permitting the syrians to eventually overcome him he used this lesson to show that persistency is absolutely necessary to success one may have talent and be different from other men but if energy is lacking then his talent goes to nought energy is what makes the man and we admire those men who by their energy per sistence and even stubborness make marks for themseves in history in the last few years three has been everywhere present a sp'ntof chance or gambling instead of mine their resourcefulness and energy men try to gain what they have not merited or earned but gradual l y new principles are being worked into society and the so called short cuts to wealth or to education are being eliminated now a man stands for what he really is in the long run the re ward goes to him who keeps at it all the time here at college we are engaged in fashioning our lives and there fore should allow no sham or de ceit what we are should be the result of honest continuous effort in these days power will be achiev ed in proportion to the amount of persistency and effort expended no 31
