when lehigh university was in its early years and the number of students small there was no college publication but with an in creased number of students a paper became a necessity the lehigh journal was started in the fall of 1873 by the class of j6 this paper was a monthly about the size of the burr and lived for a little more than a year the class of 78 in their sopho more year first published the epit ome the oldest of the present publi cations the first board of editors was composed of h f j porter m p paret and f p howe at the time of its first appearance the book created quite a sensation ; it contained in all about fifty pages and was bound in paper covers it had a few rough drawings each year the epitome grew larger until 83 was obliged to increase the number of editors to five in spite of the increased board how ever the book was not much wider in its scope that its predecessors containing little more than statis tical matter the work of publishing the epit ome was turned over to the junior class in 1885 as it was considered to be of too great importance to be entrusted to the sophomores the whole college published the book of that year to relieve 86 from the necessity of editing it two years in succession the juniors assum ed control the next year and from that time on it has rapidly advanced to its present perfection the lehigh burr was established in response to a long felt want in october 1881 in the words of the first editors it was named the burr " because it contains all that is good — and it may not be sat upon with impunity it was then a monthly and soon became a fixture in the college life early in its second year richard hard ing davis was elected to the board of editors and contributed his " tales of a freshman which have been collected and published in book form the journal of the engineering society first appeared in 1885 this continued on fourth page j v martenis 94 is associate professor of mechanical engineering at the university of minnesona gledhill 99 is a happy papa — a girl — born november 24th 1906 the brown and white lehigh university y m c a south bethlehem pa tuesday february 5 1907 washington's birthday basket=ball vol xiv no 3 2 lehigh publications the celebration of washington's birthday this year will have several new and interesting features the annual junior oratorical contest for prizes offered by the alumni association will be held at 10 o'clock at 1 1 a.m an address appro priate to the day and occasion will be delivered by the hon w u hensel of lancaster pa ex attorney general of pennsylvania following the address the honor ary degree of doctor of science will be conferred by the university on arthur arton hamerschlag direcior of the carnegie technical schools of pittsburg notices are being sent out to all the alumni and past students of the university to attend the ex ercises it is expected that the alumni will gather in considerable numbers friends of students and the university will find this cele bration well worth attending the following committee is in charge of arrangements : president drinker chairman ; prof franklin prof stewart prof richards prof lambert prof palmer prof ulmann mr emery presidents of the our classes : j b carlock h d smith g d spiers and j w kniffen ; glee club leader g k reel ; manager of musical clubs a n van vleck and leader of choir b m swope notice seniors pearson second lecture by professor prof paul m pearson will ap pear as the second speaker of the christian association lecture course in the physical laboratory on thursday evening february 7 prof pearson's distinctive work on the platform is the lecture reci tal in which he discusses the characteristics of a group of our modern writers — eugene field james whitcomb riley paul law rence dunbar joel chandler har ris and edgar allen poe illustrat ing his points by reciting typical passages from the authors works he has a temperament to make him a most sympathetic interpreter of the literature he most often rep resents and the voice and physical qualities which should accompany this temperament expressing in stantly the slightest change of thought or emotion of the excellence of mr pear son's work the record of his return engagements is sufficient evidence he has given nine lecture-recitals at chautauqua n v fourteen at mountain lake park md and twenty nine at marmette vvis in deed each year more than half of his dates are return engagements one of his chautauqua critics says of him his interpretation of riley and poe and dunbar stamp ed him a master of his art and iti was with sincere regret that hisj audiences bade him farewell he is a gentleman of charming person ality delightful delivery and keen appreciation of literary merit general admission will be 50 cents but students wishing to at tend the remainder of the course will still save so cents by buying course tickets which can be ob tained for 1 at the supply bureau 41 to 24 lehigh defeats wesleyan by last friday night lehigh won the third successive victory of the j season by defeating wesleyan 41 to 24 each team was somewhat wary of the other when the game start ed lehigh seemed unusually ner vous and it was not until the score stood 10 to 5 against them that the team began to play in earnest porter and troutman started the scoring with two pretty shots wes leyan played a good guarding game and forced their opponents to work hard for every point however by good team work and clever pass ing lehigh rolled up 19 points to wesley an s 12 in the second half wesleyan braced considerably and for a few minutes it looked as if the lead might be overcome but the spurt did not last flere lehigh's good team work again showed and 22 points were scored against vves leyan's 12 the game throughout was clean only 5 fouls being called of these travis converted 3 into points both teams took great chances at the basket lehigh failed 39 times in the first half and 41 in the sec ond while wesleyan had 24 fail ures in the first half and 42 in the second to pick out the stars of the game would be a difficult mat ter every man played in excel lent form summary : lehigh . wesleyan anderson forward soule troutman forward taylor street center white porter guard heyward travis guard chamberlain goals — travis 6 anderson 6 troutman 3 street 2 porter 2 white 4 soule 3 chamberlain 3 taylor heyward fouls travis 3 referee — pfahler lehigh um pire — grant wesleyan timekeep ers — howland wesleyan ;
