the engagement of w j von borries 05 to miss taska stit/el of louisville ky has been an nounced continued on fourth page dr drinker entertained at the home of on wednesday evening feb 6 dr and mrs drinker entertained the civil engineering society at their home about seventy-five men were present before the reg ular order of business was taken up dr drinker made a short ad dress of welcome he said that he wanted all present to lay aside their cares and enjoy themselves as he knew they had just passed through a very hard week but it was a harder week for him in that he was compelled to refuse to allow some of the men to continue their work as he felt it but a waste of their time and that for the sake of lehigh's high reputation it would be impossible for them to graduate but he felt that the ex aminations had been conducted with all fairness toward the men who took them he commented upon the success of the self-gov ernment system of the college body he mentioned the fact that the alumni all over the country were taking more interest in the university than ever before he was preparing to attend the alumni banquets at new york and wilkes barre before the close of the week he said that all the alumni clubs were making preparations to send large representations to the exer cises on washington's birthday and that the college was also pre paring to make this a memorable occasion he advised any one who knew men thinking of entering lehigh to have them here for this day in closing he extended a most cordial welcome to the so ciety as the oldest and largest of the engineering societies presi dent kent made a short and fitting reply on behalf of the society the regular order of business was then taken up it being termi nal night the first paper of the evening was on the tehuantepec terminal of the tehuantepec route by leslie e conrad c e this is a route partially by rail and par tially by water across the mexican isthmus of tehuantepec he told of the work on the harbor and yards at tehuantepec this route lehigh 88 rutgers 23 lehigh 21 swarthmore 17 on wednesday evening febru ary 6 1907 the university basket ball team played at swarthmore and won from them in one of the hardest fought games of the season by the score of 21-17 the game was devoid of sensational features but the play throughout was char acterized by splendid team work and careful judgement the game started with a rush and after a few passes svvarthmore scored an derson scored first for lehigh and after about five minutes play the lead taken by swarthmore was overcome the team work on both sides was very good aud the half ended with the close score of 13-10 in favor of lehigh the second half began with kiefe in troutman's place this be ing the only substitution made this half was a repetition of the first half but swarthmore was un able to get again into the lead the scoring of both sides was done consistently and very few fouls were called the only bit of rough play occured in the first half when swarthmore's good nature was severely taxed by lehigh's trick of passing the ball among themselves and not trying to shoot the final score was 21-17 the team is to be congratulated on breaking the hodoo which seems to have attached itself to away-from-home basket ball games thi is the first game of basket ball won away from home in three years summary : lehigh swarthmore anderson forward heed troutman ' forward clements kiefe street center kreuger griffin travis guard dill newman porter guard swayze referee al sharp yale time keepers smith lehigh johnson swarthmore scorer davies goals travis 5 kreuger 3 street 2 heed 2 anderson porter clem ents newman fouls travis 3 heed 3 continued on third page the brown and white lehigh university american humor south bethlehem pa tuesday february 12 1907 c e society no 33 athletic committee meeting vol xiv basket=ball additional games approved the athletic committee held its regular monthly meeting thurs day afternoon in christmas hall owing to the disbanding of the navy basket ball team the game at annapolis on feb 23 was can celed games were approved as follows : feb 22 pratt institute at brooklyn ; feb 23 manhattan at new york city the following additional base ball games were approved : may 22 eastern college of new york at south bethlehem june 11 university of alabama at south bethlehem the committee on grounds was authorized to have the interior of the cage painted white the floor re-oiled and two stoves put in college meeting at the college meeting held last friday morning it was decided that the decisions of the honor court should not be made public except in cases where the convicted person does not submit to the sen tence imposed upon him after much discussion a motion to pub lish the name of any person who was found guilty of violating the honor system was defeated by a narrow margin baseball practice regular practice for pitchers and catchers began last wednesday afternoon several men reported from now on all men trying for either of these positions will prac tice daily in y m c a course lecture by paul m pearson the second number of the le high christian association lecture course was given on thursday even ing in the physical laboratory it proved to be a masterful lecture recital on american humorists by prof paul m.pearson of swarth more college dr drinker intro duced the speaker in his usually clever manner referring to the friendly relations existing between the quaker institution and our own university to this intro duction prof pearson replied by saying that last night lehigh university inflicted punishment upon svvarthmore college to-night swarthmore college inflicts pun ishment upon lehigh with the expression of such a sentiment the lecture immediately won his audi ence who found him to be a gentle man of charming personality de lightful delivery and keen appre ciation of literary merit the speaker devoted the greater portion of his time to a consider ation of james whitcomb riley's works ; speaking of the other hu morists only by way of comparison with this typical american poet the lecture from time to time gave clever readings of riley's poems to illustrate the various characteristics of the poet these recitals were of the most brilliant type ranging from the lost kiss to ezra mouse riley was shown to possess melody in a wonderful de gree to be a master of technique and finally the poet of nature and man as a means of comparison the work of eugene eield the child poet was suggested with this side light riley was shown to write child verses for children while field wrote them for grown people everyone of the fair sized audience was delighted with the interpreta tion of every readidg which prof pearson attempted so well was the reading done that the poet and his poetry over shadowed the read er and his words and this stamped him as a true artist the associ ation is certainly deserving of a great deal of thanks for the splen continued on fourth page findings of honor court since the mid-year examinations three cases have been reported to the honor court in each case the accused was found guilty and punished accordingly
