continued on fourth page addressed by rev thaeler of bethlehem the regular meeting of the y m c a sunday evening at i christmas hall was addressed by ' the rev mr thaeler of the mora vian church bethlehem the meeting was well attended espe cially by the new men the speaker took as his subject reasons for the study of the bible his remarks were some what as follows we ought to study the bible in the first place because it is god's word it is god our creator and saviour speaking to us through the inspired 1 word it is not a history of the jews as the chosen people nor as a political unit but the true record of human experience with invisible forces this makes it a scientific book with scientific properties it is not an impracticable story of per fect men but through actual and practical life seeks to teach us how to live the bible is a personal i book it corrects evil and carries i a message to every individual it iis an honest book no man who obeys its teachings is forced to set 1 aside reason for absolute faith i the two are made to harmonize , the bible acts as a strength and i safeguard to erring man develops his inward senses and enables him to detect the presence of sin hate it and abstain from it the only foundation for a true education and the best prepartaion for success is the bible for a man is successful only in so far as he supplies some great need of the world as in the material world so in the spiritual men are everywhere needed the world's greatest need may be in the hearts of men the bible puts a man as it were on a peak from which he may get a broad view of the spiritual world looking about us we see on every side the effects of the bible on man and man's con dition to it we owe our civil lib erty and many of our comforts in fact there is not a single phase of life which has not directly or indi rectly felt the firm influence of god's holy word in conclusion mr thaeler spoke briefly about the ways of studying gods word said he it must be studied with prayer for guidance some system must be followed fol lowed with determination and with out prejudice lastly one must feel that in it there is a personal call to be heeded by every indi vidual last summer work done by senior civils continued on page three the summer school of the civil engineers of 06 was con ducted by the individual method each man inspecting a bridge mak ing computations to ascertain its degree of stability and preparing a report thereon this exercise oc cupied each man about one hundred hours and did not interfere with the employment in which he was engaged the following shows the manner in which twenty-six out of the thirty men in the class spent the vacation c w barwis avas at pittsburg pa locating pipe lines in the yard of the pennsylvania railroad w c benedict was draftsman in the real estate department of the dela ware and hudson railroad at scranton pa l s birely was drafting in the structural depart ment of the btethlehem steel co d h brillhart was in the drafting ' room of the guerber engineering ' co in west bethlehem j a • btich was in charge of building a ' house at santiago cuba h b daugherty was transitman on coal mining work in indiana county i pa r s edmonson was rodman ' on the pittsburg division of the pennsylvania railroad m m ' farley had charge of a gasoline launch at lake hopatcong n j e t gott was doing clerical work for the title guarantee and trust co scranton pa j h c gregg was on construction work for the ! altlas cement co northampton pa r s guerber was in france and switzerland c b hagy made land surveys near reading pa j e humphreys was on the con struction of the new york-phila delphia subway for the american telegraph and telephone co e e johnston was drafting on struc tural steel work at baltimore md r s mcmullen was in charge of reservoir construction near carbon dale pa j t mcvey was rod man for the delaware lackawan na and western railroad l mercader was transitman for the , bethlehem steel co r m mer riman assisted in making tests of slate for the u s geological sur vey k mills was on sewer work in the district engineer's office washington d c j pi opp worked on plans for the new build ings of the bethlehem steei co r r rentier was in the detailing office of the virginia bridge and lehigh university y m c a south bethlehem pa tuesday october 3 1905 c e seniors vol xiii foot ball the brown and white calendar tuesday oct 3 at 5 p m press club meeting in saucon hall — cheering practice — foot ball practice wednesday oct 4 at 3.30 p m foot ball game lehigh vs medico-chi at lehigh field thursday oct 5 at 7.30 p m meeting of the mining engineer ing society at williams hall ; at 8 p m arcadia meeting saturday oct 7 foot ball game lehigh vs new york»uni versity at new york college meeting a short college meeting was held on friday morning to elect assist ant managers for the various teams and an athletic representative-at large gott 06 spoke of maintain ing the honor system and said that he hoped to have president drinker address a college meeting in the near future concerning the matter manager smith of the foot ball team made a few remarks about the poor attendance at cheering practices and called upon the whole college to give the team better support the founder's day hop com mittee was announced and notice was given that the first meeting would be held on sunday afternoon at the chi phi house the com mittee consists of edmonson home 06 ; pattison dorrance 07 ; jessup norton 08 ; and shoe maker 09 w s watson 06 was elected athletic representative-at-large and earth duncan and waddill 07 were chosen assistant managers of the lacrosse base ball and track teams respectively 1909 class meeting the class of 1909 held a class meeting monday morning oct 2 in saucon hall the resignation of g d speirs as temporary president was considered speirs js out for the varsity squad and claimed that he did not have enough ( time for his duties as president his resignation was ac cepted and a p s bellis elected temporary president a repre sentative of the brown and white was present and talked for a few moments president drinker was almost present pennsylvania 35 lehigh o in the second game of the season lehigh was defeated by the score of 35-0 the overwhelmingly heavy team averaging about twen ty pounds heavier to a man than our own made victory an impossi bility but any man who saw the game will always remember the plucky fight our team made about a hundred men accompanied the team to philadelphia and when captain herman's team appeared on the field at 2.45 they were greeted by a rousing lehigh cheer twnty-five minutes later the penn sylvania team arrived and after limbering up the game was called at 3.30 o'c'lock lehigh won the toss and elected to receive the kick-off perm was penalized five yards for offside on the next kick-off and just before t>eing downed after a gpod gain gott passed to bachman who gained five yards more ten yards by bachman and five by herman on a fake kick brought the ball to lehigh's 35-yard line where a fumble resulted in a touchdown for perm torrey kicking the goal perm 6 ; lehigh o lehigh again received the kick off place running it back ten yards lehigh lost the ball on downs on their 35-yard line steady gains brought the ball to lehigh's 100-yard line lamson going over for the next touchdown corson kicked the goal perm 12 le high o place ran twenty yards on the next kick-off lehigh was forced to kick and corson brought the ball back five yards ziegler went around lehigh's right end for ten yards and would have crossed the line if gott had not made a beauti ful flying tackle this brought the ball to lehigh's 8-yard line the ball going over the line on the next play carson kicked the goal perm 18 lehigh o lehigh again received the kick off place after running it back twenty yards lost the ball on being tackled bachman picked it up on the run and added five more yards on the next play smartt lost the ball on a fierce tac kle by torrey ; larnson picking up the ball scored the last touch down for perm carson kicked the goal perm 24 lehigh o lehigh kicked off to pennsylra nia on long runs two of which would have been touchdowns ex no 4
