c e society minstrel show a very successful rehearsal of the minstrel show was held wed nesday afternoon and the prospects are very encouraging a large number were present and the chorus gives promise of surpassing those of former years as many of che fellows have good voices a short meeting of candidates for end men was held after the rehearsal a notice has been posted in the gymnasium making a change in the basket ba 1 ! hours to take effect from november 6 to the christmas recess on mondays the ball will not be allowed on the floor between 3 and 5 p m this period is open for gym team practice during the first hour of which the director will be on duty as coach after thanksgiving the freshmen sec ii will have the floor from 4 to 5 o'clock and will have exclusive right to the ball for the last fifteen minutes the varsity basket ball team will practice from 5 to 6 p m on wednesdays the varsity will again practice from 1.30 until 3.30 and the gym team from 3.30 until 6 o'clock so fraternities are prohibited from admitting men to membership unti 1 after they have been enrolled as students of the university no student of the university whose name is on the freshman roll will be alloweda 1 lowed to live in a fraternity house during the first term this rule goes into effect on monday november 13 1905 rule 36 originally stipulated that fraternities were not to admit men to arranged by the y m c a and will be held at intervals of about one month the addresses will be made by prominent religious educators the first meeting was addressed by bishop talbot who based his remarks on the story of jacob's dream and its practicable applica tion to modern life like the ladder in the dream all life is based upon the earth upon physical facts among other things the bishop said : it is a man's religious duty to attend the polls on election day and vote an honest ticket for only in this way can corruption be stamped out during the middle ages many men thought the only way to live a pure life was to get away from evil now . a strong man battles with evil and tries to overcome it but the ladder also had an end in heaven and man must also look to heaven for guidance the bishop's remarks were very practical and made a deep impression on the au dience which numbered about four hundred long hard practice on wednesday afternoon the varsity and scrub went through their usual long hard practice a large number of the squad reported for practice the men are all in pretty good condition except bay less whose injured knee still gives him much trouble after a long signal drill the var sity and scrub lined up for a prac tice game the varsity received the kick-off and by steady gains brought the ball to the scrub's ten yard line where they were held for downs a trial at a field goal was blocked but olcott fell on the ball back of the line for a touchdown the ball was again put into play on the scrub's five-yard line and after several minutes of play troutman broke away for the sec ond touchdown the ball was again put into play tby the varsity on the five-yard line bachman broke away and ran the entire length of the field for a touchdown the practice was hard and fast as usual the men all working well the team deserves better support and more men should come out to see the practices and practice the new songs and cheers the line-up varsity scrub
