instead of the regular student meeting at 6.30 o'clock on sunday evening there will be a y m c a service conducted in the chapel at 3.45 p mi john willis baer a member of the board of home missions oi the presbyterian church in the united states will be the speaker on this occasion mr baer was born in rochester minn in 1861 as a young men he spent some years at newspaper work and later held a very respon sible position with the van dusen elevator company of minneapolis he was very successful as a busi ness man but his excelelnt work in busines and in christian endeavor work marked him as a fit person for a wider field he has traveled widely in both united states and canada and has made frequent trips to europe he is widely noted for his eloquence his wit and his genial unfailing courtesy his great ability as a public speaker has brought him be fore many important gatherings of temperance and other reform bodies the great missionary assem blies and the conferences of the va rious denominations . mr baer is one of the greatest speakers on religious matters of the present time and the rare ability shown by him 1 as the executive offi cer of the vast christian endeavor international conventions stamps him as a man of great business and executive ability much of mr baer's time is now spent in college and prep schools as well as at student conferences this will be the first time he has ever been to lehigh and it is urged that a large representation of the student body be present nowi that the foot ball season is over regular fall and winter la crosse practice will begin in earn est as long as the weather per mits practice will be held on the field on wednesday and saturday afternoons at 2 o'clock the cage wild be used during inclement weather the lighting of the cage is not so good as was expected and in consequence practice will have to be held early in the afternoons named the candidates for the team are requested to report promptly at 2 p mi so far most of the men who have been reporting for practice are freshmen or men who are new at the game all the members of last year's varsity and scrub who are now in college are particularly urged to come out some of the freshmen possibly do not know that they may be excused from gyminasiuim work by attending la crosse practices regularly as many as possible are urged to get slips from dr suiter and present them to the captain at the next practice reports from hopkins and swarthmo're regarding their pros pects are very promising both colleges have been holding regular fall practices and are confident of having winning teams remember practice at 2 p m wednesdays and saturdays any one wishing to order a stick will please give his name to the captain or to assistant manager barth basket ball one of the most promising squads of basket ball players in le bigh's history is now practicing several times a week in the gymna sium about thirty men reported to captain travin on wednesday af ternoon each man was tried and some very clever passing and goal shooting was seen some of the new men did especially good work while the old men showed their usual form the schedule will be a difficult one and it is hoped that all of the candidates will practice faithfully of the new men davies bobson kiefe plorter,fasenmeyer kaiser,klair and updegraff showed some o>f the ear marks of the game the list of candidates includes be sides these men forwards trout man m'aurer fasenmeyer buch hip well and dayett ; centers pierce kaiser p d snyder t snyder priestly and drumimond guards travis anderson me mullen davies porter updegraff and porter banjo club the banjo club held a very suc cessful rehearsal in christmas hall on wednesday afternoon the men play very well and show signs of a & h r r gordon eugene kent r t tun-stall 08 has left col lege to return at the beginning of he second term wednesday's papers announced the death of c j biechdolt 75 of media pa sinice 1891 mr bech dolt has been superintendent of the central division of the phila wil mington and baltimore r r gymnasium team the gymnasium is showing an unusual amount of life at this time of the year much of this activity is due to the daily work of the gymnasium team the majority of the men reported on wednesday afternoon and were put through sonic strenuous stunts by the phy sical director the prospects for captain brown's athletes is very promising and they should do very well in the six prospective dates which the manager hopes to make three of these will be on the home floor while the other three will be away from home all of the candi dates are exerting every effort to make the season a splendid success the following men are at present trying for positions captain brown moore scott stauffer hesse donaldison,trembly banks mcdevitt krause levering cun ningham dudley and couch with ex-captain evans as a sure point winner the outlook is certainly very encouraging the third meeting of the min ing society was held on wednes day evening it was decided to have the emblem of the society placed on all the society programs and stationery olwing to the sickness of f j deemer jr the discussion on the gilberton water shaft was omitted l d moore discussed terminal construction as carried on by the lackawanna r r co around new york the lackawanna r r co is endeavoring to get a larger number of the 250,000 to 300,000 people who daily enter new york as passengers and in order to do this they are building a tunnel connecting the hoboken ter minal with 23d street new york to build this tumm a numfber of deep cuts were necessary to reduce the heavy grades and eliminate the grade crossings some of the cuts are a mile long and the retaining walls along these cuts are built of concrete the cost of the improve ments is about 5,000,000 while this work is being carried on traffic is not interfered with the ter minal of the road will be in hobo ken and all the train-sheds plat forms piers etc will be built of concrete besides the building of this tunnel the company is com pleting six ferry slips sixteen tracks reach these slips and when finished this will be the finest sin gle road terminal in new york a number of sketches and photo graphs of the locality and work done were shown recent advances in ore dress ing was the subject of the paper by f volkrodt a number of new methods were mentioned and the van meeter method for concen trating and separation of slimes by oil was given in detait prof eckfeldt tofld of his four years experience as a mining engi neer in mexico maps sketches and photographs were shown to aid the listeners as the speaker de scribed the places incidents and workings while engaged in this work prof eckfeldt was called upon to do surface and mine sur veying to build railroads to super intend smelters and to act as pay master and cashier for the com pany university choir the time of practice for the uni versity choir has been changed to tuesday afternoons at 5 o'clock the practice was formerly held at 5 p m on fridays the practice on tuesday afternoon was attended very well over fifty men reported and a very fine practice resulted the choir has been occupying the regular choir seats during chapel services for some time and a great improvement in chapel sing ing has resulted about thirty men report for chapel service and lead in the
