foot ball " l's " awarded and class numerals at a regular monthly meeting of j the athletic committee held on j thursday evening at christmas i hall the following members of the 1905 varsity foot ball team were awarded the foot-ball l : her jman gott strauss pynejohnston dunn stocker olcott sheridan bachman pierce brumbaugh and lawyer foot-bam monograms were awarded to the following grimball van reenen e g king speirs torrey fulton brennan westerbeke crowther marshall smartt laubenstein travis dun can mercur hoppin troutman young amon m l smith the following sophomores and freshmen were awarded their num erals for playing on their respective teams on founder's day : 1908 foot ball — komlara stein h d smith archer trembly cunningham banks anderson troutman schuman johnstone pierce and gotsehall 1909 foot ball — walton desh love morris gonzalez wigton boyer meseroll mandell davies amon dobson toone pillow and cannell 1909 base ball — miller os borne ahrens musselman upde graff lawrence schneller j sto beaus s stobeaus thomas quinn and serfass 1909 relay — wahl gilligan conklin simmons and lawrence the following basket ball games were approved : jan 6 medico-chi at south bethllehemi jan 26 johns hopkins at bal timiore feb 2 penna state at south bethlehem feb 3 manhattan at new york feb 10 johns hopkins at south bethlehem feb 24 stevens at south beth lehem 1 . march 2 columbia at new york march 3 pratt institute at new york it is probable that two more jdates will be arranged these in cluding what have already been an nounced will bring the total num ber of dates up to fourteen a complete schedule will be published later calendar wednesday dec 13 at 2 p m lacrosse practice basket ball practice minstrel show rehearsal at 7.30 p m civil engineers meet in saucon hall concrete night thursday dec 14 at 7.30 p m e e society meets in physical laboratory arts and science club meets in saucon hall ; arcadia meets friday dec 15 at 11.30 a m college lecture in physical labo ratory at 12.30 p m college meeting tuesday dec 19 sophomore cotillion wednesday dec 20 minstrel show at grand opera house so bethlehem friday dec 22 at 12.30 p m christmas vacation begins town and gown dance the forum the first of the series of town and gown dances to be given this year was held saturday evening at the sim inn and proved to be a most enjoyable function in spite of the inclement weather quite a large crowd was present about twenty-five lehigh men being pres ent the committee in charge of these dances is as fo 1 lows : miss ida lindermian miss elsie myers miss rxith lindermian mr albert brodhead mr t m dodson and mr alan c dodson the next dance will be given on the evening of january 13th 1906 on friday december 8 the first lecture under the auspices of the y m c a was given in the phy sical laboratory by robert e speer mr speer is an alumnus of princeton and is secretary of the presbyterian board of foreign missions the lecture was well at tended the chapel choir was present and several hymns were led by them dr drinker presided it was in reality a heart-to-heart talk with the mien about personal uprightness mr speer based his remarks upon christ's interview with the rich young ruler this he said was the most modern in cident in the life of our saviour the case of the rich young ruler has many parallels to-day some people claim that the young ruler had not done all he professed in other words he lied and there are many men to-day who declare that they cannot accept christ because of intellectual difficulties when their real reason is a moral one — that they are leading unclean lives even and will not give them up others say he was a boastful foal but i believe he was not he asked a sincere question and went away in sincere regret that he was not capable of fulfilling the com mand christ gave him fie resem bled a twentieth century student in my belief he was good morally and of good character btut he had kept the commandments in act only and not in spirit fie was tried and found wanting he did not possess the higher spiritual hero ism and i say to you fellows keep your records clean and unsul lied for the first reason a clean record saves all fear of exposure many men are cursed day and night by the dread of their unclean ness being revealed fear of ex posure shackles them again and again detectives have been placed to look up the past of political re formers in the hope of finding some proof of uncleanness fn their lives when police commissioner of new york city roosevelt was watched constantly by detectives he stepped up to one one day and said your watch will be of no avail my children's honor and my own is so much to me that i could not do these things secondly a man with a clean record may feel comfortable in the presence of innocents he can en joy the company of good women and even suffer little children to climb upon his knee without pangs of regret and self-loathing i have known mien at college who have been ashamed to go home at vaca tion simply because they could not carry home all that they had brought with them and for a third reason a man must be clean to have intercourse on sunday afternoon in the chapel was delivered one of the most forcible and instructive y m c a tallks of the year by mr john | wil l is baer,a member of the board j of home missions of the presby i terian church he said in part : the religion of jesus christ hurts the religion of jesus christ heals and the religion ! of jesus christ helps first the religion of esus christ hurts the christian life is a difficult life ; it embodies a vigor ous fight with evil sin and satan it is much easier for us to preach than for us to live up to the princi ples which we are preaching and yet we want least of all in this world to have the word tiypocrit written on our foreheads the religion of jesus christ heals this is indeed a more hope ful note god is not mocked ; whatsoever a man soeth that shall he also reap beware of the social glass because of the results which it may bring about while you may continued on fourth page the regular meeting of the forum took place in saucon hall on thursday evening routine business was transacted the most important of which was the resolu tion passed to challenge rutgers college to a debate president lee read a selected story from balzac a passion in the desert and a literary discussion followed the forum will not meet again until after the . christmas recess vol xiii lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday december 12 1905 y m c a 1906 calendar no 23 the brown and white artistic and well arranged the lehigh university calendar for 1906 has been on exhibition at the l u supply bureau for over a week the calendar this year pre cents several radical changes which have improved its general appearance greatly the design of the cover is especially striking and the size has been reduced so that the calendar may be more easily shipped and is also the standard size for college calendars the cover is a neat design with the university seal in the center embossed in brown and gold the cover itself is white and presents a beautiful contrast in colors the interior presents cuts of all the athletic teams and their respec tive captains views of the campus and university buildings both in summer and winter scenes on the athletic field and lehigh river the teams are arranged so as to appear on the calendar in the month in which their particular sport holds predominance the scenes are also characteristic of the month in which they are printed the price has also been placed at a reasonable rate considering the quality and improvements in the calendar special arrangements have been made whereby calendars will be sent to any address the entire stock is now on hand addresses by robert g speer and john willis baer with other men he must be square out in the open and con ceal nothing he must not have any crookedness about him the hanover blank employs over six hundred men and it also employs a staff of detectives to watch each man and ascertain his personal habits and in the fourth place a man can not posses strength of charac ter unless he keep himself clean the face is the indicator of charac ter you can not conceal what you wish to hide nature punishes the transgressor of her laws and brands him on the face and when temptation comes to a man who has kept his record unsullied his character will decide for him and take him out of danger a good conscience also is worth much it is possible for every man at college to keep his record clean i believe that half my own class could have said with the rich young ruler all these things have i kept from my youth up i knew per sonally many fellows as manly and papular as any who led pure and spotless lives do you mean to tell me that my little boy at home pure and innocent as he now is must in time become a low and filthy wreck of a man no i do not and will not believe it some may be here to-day who say if only we had heard this several years ago but now it is too late we are no longer clean i say to these there is a power that changed the flesh of the leper into that of a child and it is just as powerful to-day it takes men and frees them from their past do not let us betray ourselves !" athletic committee
