continued on fourth page continued on fourth page following the precedent of last year a lecture and entertainment course will again be given on the campus under the auspices of the young men's christian associa tion the entertainments will be held as formerly in the large lec ture room of the physical labora tory the first number will be given on january 17 when dr charles a eastman the only north amer ican indian on the lecture platform will deliver a lecture on some sub ject relating to his race the other numbers will be given at intervals of about three weeks dr charles a eastman was horn in minnesota in 1858 and is hy birth a sioux and for fifteen years of his life lived with his fel low tribesmen he acquired his early training in a mission school and later attended beloit knox dartmouth and the boston univer sity of the last two institutions he is a graduate in fact he is the only indian who has ever gradu ated from dartmouth he is the author of several books among which may be named indian boy hood and red hunters and the american people both of these hooks are unique and interesting and have passed through several editions hamlin garland who was on the lecture course of last year says of dr eastman : far and away the ablest living exposition of sioux life and character his lectures prove a veritable revelation to ihose who know the indian simp 1 y by reading of him in books the press commends his lectures very highly and unites in the sentiment dr eastman would be an exceptional man were he of caucasian race he is the bright and shining light of his race to-day the subject of his lecture will be the real indian the second entertainment of the course will take place on february 20 and the attraction will be mr elias day characterist assisted by his wife mrs oranne truitt-day a noted reader mr day is a finished artist in his line and is acknowledged as one of the three great platform entertain ers he combines rare talent with a genius for work and study in his sketches he uses wigs and paints which aided by his trained observation of human nature make his characterizations gems of real istic delineation his most famous sketches are col fayerweather of frankfort kentucky suh battine an de baby danny the three palm trees dan mccarty's song to the kids and toast to the ladies his imper sonations are those of a finished in terpreter of the idiosyncrasies of human nature mrs day herself is an enter tainer of some note and was on the lehigh university c e society south bethlehem pa friday december 15 1905 minstrel show no 24 the brown and white vol xiij y m c a lecture course four first class entertainments promised chorus and endmen selected the minstrel men held a very successful practice on wednesday afternoon the various soloists were given a first try and the chorus responded to every song in a clever fashion the practices will be held frequently from now until the show and every man is requested to be present at each one the songs are catchy and up-to date the singers are splendid the second part promises to be just as good as ever the minstrel as sociation is a college institution and should receive due support it is hoped that every freshman and in fact every student will stay long enough to see a great college show practices will be held this week on thursday and friday at 7.30 p.m the rehearsals for next week will be held on sunday in the psi upsilon house at 2.30 p.m and monday and tuesday nights at 7.30 a final dress rehearsal will be held on wednesday at 2 p.m the following men have been selected to take part in the show : interlocutor : street 06 ; bones wrightson stair and bechtel ; tambos a c smith m l h smith and dean chorus h l watson w r morris caldwell jessup schnabel ramsay goucher l thomas n l johnson bayless baker balston banks c d brown williamson kennedy hays wray bayard smith mc intosh archer wait eigenbrodt carrier zollinger gross finnic drummond pope eshleman van vleck brooks brodhead stevens gladden treverton mather lue ders the second part will include selections by the banjo club spe cialties by brodhead wait and moore and stair with payne the following men have been selected to play on the banjo club banjos : tooker leader bason gibble thomas davies mandolins h d smith ste phens komara van vleck guitars fluharty waite grim ball lecture platform for some years as a reader and combining her talent with that of mr day a most enter taining evening is furnished the third attraction is the bohu mir kryl company and will be given on march 10 the company is made up of bohumir kryl the world's greatest cornetist julia heinrich contralto carl heinrich baritone and violinist and phoebe mac roberts rjeader bohumir kryl has for several years been the sensation of two continents in the use of the cornet miss julia heinrich and her brother karl heinrich are the children of the famous max hein rich both are accomplished ar tists especially miss julia hein rich whose beautiful song interpre tation has brought her great fame miss phoebe mac roberts is a reader from chicago she com bines with a rare personal beauty a talent seldom equalled among readers she is very versatile and has the power to delineate charac ter in a most attractive way the final entertainment will be given on april 3 the rogers grilley recitals will be the attrac tion many years of enthusiastic effort have enabled these gentle men to produce a prog-ram for the amusement-loving 1 public that not only provides pleasure but con forms to what is best in art every season finds these artists with fresh novelties and striking selections their entertainments are among the best in their line furnished at the present day rogers is famous as a harpist and grilley as a humor ist among their best selections are everything reminds me so of chicken a department store ditty oh woe is me ameri can patrol and many others of equally high standing tickets for this course may be had at the y m c a office in christmas hall or may be ordered by phone at the same office after the 15th tickets will also be placed on sale at the l u supply bureau the patronesses mrs h s drinker mrs a johnston mrs jos adams mrs m merriman mrs a b fichter mrs o l thornburg mrs m b cutter mrs r radford mrs b w frazier mrs a b desaulles mrs w s franklin mrs c miner uodson mrs r h sayre mrs r w blake mrs chas m dodson mrs w d myers mrs capt berry several new men reported for practice on wednesday and showed promising form everyone is work ing hard and all seem to be in good condition the work at present is very light professor merriman speaks a very interesting meeting of the civil engineering society was held on wednesday evening the subject being " concrete night after the routine business had been transacted extracts from a letter by h a rice c e a for mer instructor in the c e de partment and well remembered by all were read by president merri man mr rice is now an assist ant professor at the university of kansas and is doing well the first number on the program was on " modern cement manu facturing by j h c gregg 06 mr gregg gave a description of one of the plants of the atlas portland cement company this plant is built after the most ad vanced methods and in a very sub stantial manner the burning is done in rotary kilns 125 feet long which is about twice the usual length many plants unlike the atlas company hesitate to invest large amounts in equipment fear ing that some chemical method may be discovered which will en tirely revolutionize cement manu facture w a draper 07 read a paper on the concrete bridge over rock creek washington d c this bridge is where connecticut avenue crosses rock creek and is one of the largest masonry bridges ever built it is built of a combined construction of concrete blocks and monolithic work the bridge is composed of seven full centered arches and is 150 feet above the bottom of the gorge five thous and cubic yards of concrete were used without any reinforcement a very exhaustive paper on the subject " a concrete arch on the n y c & h r r was read by g e kent 07 this arch is to reinforce a trestle and was built in the middle of a stream thus com plicating the construction mr kent accompanied his talk with numerous photographs and blue prints representing different stages of the work his talk covered the subject from all sides and was very interesting and instructive professor merriman gave the last talk of the evening his subject was " hydraulics of coal river west virginia this river for merly used for transporting coal
