princeton 46 princeton defeated lehigh wed nesday in a well-played game of basket ball at princeton by the score of 46 to 22 the remarkable improvement in team work shown by the tigers since the first game with dartmouth has raised the hopes of the orange and black for a successful season the principal weakness in princeton's playing was reckless ness in charging which resulted in many fouls the lehigh players failed to guard their goal properly and were repeated 1 y surprised while the tigers forwards rhrew easy goals without any interfer ence anderson excelled for lehigh the entire team however was han dicapped by the absence of captain travis who has watei on the knee the line-upi princeton lehigh vanderbilt forward troutman mclean surburg forward mauer 1 clark hooks center pierce fish guard anderson halliday haven guard davies kahler goals from field — clark 7 halliday 5 vanderbilt 4 mc lean 2 maurer 2 anderson 2 davies troutman pierce surburg haven hooks goals from fouls — vanderbilt 2 mc lean 2 pierce 2 anderson 4 fouls — princeton 18 le high 8 referee e c stratton trenton timers feagles prince ton van duyne lebigh time of halves — 15 and 20 minutes — from the philadelphia press 1906 epitome coal mining night the regular meeting of the min ing and geological society was held thursday night january 11 after the regular business of the evening was transacted a paper on the safety lamp was read by g m jessup he spoke of the dan ger of gases with which the min ers have to contend and of the in vention of the safety lamp of hum pry davy after the new castle disaster he followed this by a discussion of the inventions of stevenson clanning and others on the safety lamp . . different safety lamps were shown and the degree of safety in the use of the various lamps was brought forth his talk was closed by showing how the various lamps are operated the next paper of the evening was read by a w hesse on georges creek coal mine ocean no 7 the operations production and surface arrangements were discussed ; and the system of survey work explained mr burkhart spoke of the rich mond va coal field it was the first coal field opened in this coun try and in 1770 was in full opera tion the difficulties were brought out in the discussion of the geology of that section specimens of the ex treme qualities of the coke were shown which were described and their properties discussed he also spoke of the coal mine of coal brook and told of the tests of the coal difficulties to be overcome and the disasters in this mine his talk was followed with remarks by prof irving upon the geology of the region just discussed the program of the evening was closed by a smoker the meeting just held was well attended but there are many miners in college who shyster when they should be supporting the society by their attendance the next meeting of the society will be held february 7 and it is expected will be the best of the year at a meeting of the 1906 epitome board held at the beta theta pi chapter house on wed nesday evening it was decided to reduce the price of the 1906 epitome still in the hands of the board to 1.00 this measure is made necessary by the fact that un less more books are sold the mem bers of the board will be obliged to make up a deficit out of their own pockets it is almost the duty of every man in college to procure an epitome and the reduced rate will surely place the books within the reach of all at least financially continued on fourth page schedules for winter and spring sports approved the regular monthly meeting of the athletic committee was held in the committee room at christ inas hall thursday evening the following basket ball schedule was approved : jan 13 albright at south beth lehem feb 2 benn state at south bethlehem feb 3 manhattan,at new york feb 10 susquehanna at south bethlehem feb 14 swarthmore at swarth more feb 24 stevens at south beth lehem march 2 columbia at new york march 3 pratt institute at new york march 10 swarthmore at south bethlehem march 17 bucknell at lewis burg march 24 c c n v at south bethlehem in addition to these a game with the carlisle indians for january 20 is under consideration and will probably be arranged for the gym team schedule was presented and the following meets approved : april 7 c c n v at south bethlehem april 14 columbia at south bethlehem april 20 cornell at south bethlehem april 25 uni of virginia at south bethlehem april 28 johns hopkins at south bethlehem 1 . may 5 swarthmore at south bethlehem may 9 u of p at philadel phia may 12 stevens at south beth lehem the following 1 partial base ball schedule was approved april 4 delaware at south bethlehem april 21 dickinson at south bethlehem may 5 lafayette at south beth lehem may 9 f & m at south beth lehem may 12 state at state college pa may 19 villa nova at south bethlehem
