world court conference meets today at princeton bosey reiter gives views on intercollegiate football the brown and white initiates series of articles of lehigh men to be published in as indicative of nation wide thought collegiate body to discuss paramount question of the day heavyweight class seems only weak spot in sheridan's aggregation schuylkill college to be brown and white's initial is printed below it appeared recently in a number of the daily newspapers in this section of the country take the venom out of football is the subject elabor atedated on by prof h r rei ter former pin'nceton star and professor of physical educa tion at lehigh written at the request of critics who are spec ulating on the probable effect of quarterback charlie m prior's death on the gridiron this sea son and on the games in gener al it raises the issue which the writer is convinced must be met in the interest of football his article follows — con on page 2 col 4 each season as the curtain drops on the college gridiron here and there a gruesome sha con on page 4 col 5 among the prominent men who will lead groups saturday morning who have accepted the invitation of the national exe cutive committee are dr hen ry van dyke former ambassa dor to the northerlands ; roland s morris former ambassador to japan ; norman thomas dir ector of the league of industrial democracy herbert houston member of the american com mittee of the international chamber of commerce ; . mary wooley president of mt holy oke college john p dulles new york barrister herbert adams gibbons noted war cor respondent and author and ivy l lee new york publicity ex pert among the topics to be dis cussed by these leaders are the since the curtain has been rung down on collegiate foot ball some two or three weeks ago there has been an unprece dented amount of discussion in all forms of publications — news papers magazines special pamphlets and other forms on the outlook needed reforms suggested improvements and other phases of intercollegiate football these discussions and opinions have been given by people with all kinds of view points and from all sides of the question in line with these dis cussions the brown and white will publish a series of articles giving the ideas of several local authorities some of whom are members of the faculty and some of whom are interested in the university but are not fa culty members the first of to crystallize the student opinion of the country on the subject of the world court and to provide for a permanent or ganization to consider such questions arising in the future is the purpose of the national collegiate world court confer ence being held in princeton to day and tomorrow under the auspices of an intercollegiate executive committee john w davis dr george e vincent president of the rocke feller foundation and raymond b fosdick former under-sec retary general of the league of nations will be the principal speakers mr davis will ad dress the opening meeting of the conference while dr vincent and mr fosdick will speak at the second general gathering the following evening frosh courtmen show strong team in first practices soph council deals severely with delinquent frosh new directory graphically shows growth of lehigh inter=frat council decides on winter sport schedule hold varsity with ease and have power in offense yearlings brought to task for careless • infractions of rules delta theta petition to lamb da chi alpha also dis cussed thirty states and twelve na tions represented on old south mountain large squad committee reports amusing incidents fund of information lehigh will open its basket ball season tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 in taylor gymnasium with the schuylkill college quintet this game will enable coach buddy lingle to get a line on his men before the princeton game on december 16th • , the reading quintet lost their first game to lafayette last sat urday evening by a 32-13 score so lehigh should have little trouble in defeating them the only man from last season's team lost by graduation was gallagher a center and his place will probably be filled by ced smith a guard last sea son chuck hess captain of last year's quintet and star for ward has not yet fully recover ed from injuries received in football so his place will prob ably be filled by harry lister with captain benny wein stein and the schaub brothers to fill the remaining positions le high will present a ' team with great offensive as well as defen sive power billmeyer former new york collegiate institute star and captain of last year's frosh team is another men who is sure to see action before the game is over societies to hold combined meeting j thomas keady former coach of football at lehigh uni versity now in charge of ath letics for the united states ma rines at quantico va gave a straight-from-the^shoulder talk on football at the weekly lun cheon meeting of the rotary club at the hotel bethlehem wednesday in which he declar ed that he always stood for fair and clean sports and made an effort to inculcate into the minds of the young v men under his charge the desire to educate themselves mentally physically and morally mr keady was given an ovation for he made many friends among the rotar ians during his eight years as the athletic mentor at lehigh university con on page 4 col 1 the sheriff wannemacher or chestra of five pieces played ex cellent music and accompanied the rotary club entertained the lehigh football team at its luncheon meeting and with few exceptions every member new competition for ford slogan interesting speaker prizes for best offerings in contest — to be printed in college humor wrestling meets probably the most exciting of the winter sports events shall soon be a reality and a large squad is daily working out in prepara tion for the first meet in jan uary the schedule is the most difficult a lehigh team has to face in any sport for only the first rank teams of the east are to be met lehigh has won much renown for her wrestling teams of past years and for this reason meets with the pick of the eastern teams are easily ar ranged captain best inter collegiate 125 pound champion should lead a winning team this year for there is excellent ma terial for a strong team espe cially in the lighter weights in the 115 pound class jim my reed and eddy mcgoevrn will most likely fight it out reed undoubtedly has the ad vantage as he ranked third in his class in last year's intercol legiates reed is also in fine condition due to a strenuous season of soccer captain best palm and cornelius represent the talent in the 125-lb class and this weight should be well rep resented with an intercollegiate champ enacting that role in the 135 pound class there are no regular varsity men back with the exception of poliska who most likely will represent that class due to his three years ex perience on the squad willis of last year's frosh team pitts and heilman furnish the oppo sition in this class dick lewis and lemay another of last year's frosh have things their own way in the 145 pound class lewis was runner up in his class in the intercollegiates last year when he was only a sopho more and so he should have a very successful season this year con on page 3 col 2 closes feb tenth con on page 4 col 5 the regular monthly meeting of the inter-fraternity council was held on monday evening in prown hall president patty presided and after the usual minor reports the athletic pol icy was discussed by evans who is in charge of the interfrater nity sports this season the 4jym will be available for the fraternities for basketball prac tice every evening except thurs day on both the upper and low er floors the time will be di vided up so that four teams are able to play each evening one on each of the courts for one hour the schedule will be made up and the first round will start di rectly after the xmas holidays this also applies to the other r o t c cancels winter drill the student directory con taining the names of all stu dents who were properly enroll ed on november fifteenth is now avaliable and may be se cured at the supply bureau in the memorial building this small volume is compiled in dean mcconn's office and pub lished each year by the univer sity con on page 3 col 4 the directory has in condens ed form formulated five meets planned the alexander hamilton club and the mining and metallurgi cal society will hold a combined meeting in coppee hall on mon day evening december 14th at eight o'clock the speaker mr earnest smith is the editor of the times leader of wilkes barre and is interested in var ious mining enterprises around that section his talk will be on the history of anthracite mining in northern pennsylva nia and will undoubtedly be a good one as he is an authority on the subject and is at the pre sent time writing a book on it this is the first attempt at a combined meeting such as this and it is hoped that there will be a large attendance from both societies to welcome mr smith several additional attractions have been promised for the pro gram in order to stimulate interest among the students of the uni versity the burr in conjunction with college humor offers a contest in which all its readers are eligible this contest is the ford slogan congest le high as in every other school in america is infested with ten dollar jfords machines that are fantastically painted and decor ated wiik college phrases in this contest the burr wishes to present the most humorous of these college-car phrases to its readers all slogans printed in the magazine are automatically entered in the prize contest col lege humor also will devote adequate space to the winners con on page 4 col 5 1 the limit is two pages they will run in january and february issues these pages to all appearances it seems that the freshmen intend to make a name for themselves in basketball this year for they have the material for an ex ceptionally good squad after a poor season on the gridiron it is thoroughly refreshing to see the makings of a good team to uphold the first year men the frosh have been scrim maging against the varsity quite regularly they are ai rways capable of holding their f superiors in check and that is no small task for any team on last tuesday night the frosh stepped out and established a good lead which the varsity had much difficulty in overcom ing the yearlings have a team which is larger and rangier than the varsity and are capable of putting up a very thorough de fense for a new team glowacki hess bandorski blackmar martindale morrison and how land are the men who have been showing the most aggressive ness for the yearlings of these men glowacki is probably the outstanding man because of his consistent ability to score be sides these men there is a large squad also working out each night which promises more good i material the value of a freshman team in developing material for the varsity is very evident this year because of the success of last year's yearlings on the pres ent squad levin billmeyer berman and swartz*stein are all showing up very well in prelim inary practice and it is quite likely that billmeyer may suc ceed in holding down a regular guard position on the varsity the r 0 t c unit of le high has definitely cancelled all drill periods for the remainder of the present semester and pos sibly for several periods in the second semester the severity of the winter will govern the length of the non-drill period the student officers and the regular staff here at the uni versity discussed the feasibility of holding classes in doors at the regular stated drill periods and endeavoring at that time to give the students taking the drill a thorough study of field and drill movements in conjunc con on page 4 col 3 calendar notice the brown and white will publish a calendar every week in the tuesday issue it will include events from the tues day evening of publication un til the following tuesday noon all students having notices of coming events are requested to btify rich at the sigma phi epsilon house phone 1421 not later than the sunday of the week for which there are the notices the sooner he is notified the better it is the desire of the brown and white to have this calendar as complete as pos sible and with a certain amount of co-operation on the part of the leaders of the va rious activities on he cam pus this can be accomplish ed if it is found impossible to get in touch with rich write the notice on a piece of paper and slip it under the door of the brown and white room meeting monday evening in coppee hall for the last time before the christmas holidays the members of the sophomore council brought to account mor,e than a dozen frosh who appear ed under charges of varying na ture and seriousness most of the offenders however pled their causes so ably as to es cape punishment but those who were less fortunate were made to feel the full force of the sophomore's wrath the deci sions of the council were mark ed by unexpected degrees of le niency in offenses of serious na ture and equally surprising de grees of harshness in cases of less serious violations three or four of the froh de nied the infractions charged against them and in the absence , of their prosecuting sophomores or upperclassmen their cases were held in abeyance until the accusers might be secured and the actual facts gathered be cause of the delay thus necessi tated the council moved that hereafter any student present ing a charge against a frosh must attend the council meeting and face the culprit so as to mm imize the possibilities of jus tice going amiss one frosh failed to appear he was summoned to a previous meeting of the council to face several charges and on the oc casion of his first summons failed to report when met by a member of the sophomore council and asked the reason of his
