lacrosse college lecture track relay team defeated at u of p relay races at the relay races held under the auspices of the university of pennsylvania saturday afternoon at franklin field lehigh's team composed of grimball,m l smith levan and aman ran in class c but were unplaced the race was won by lafayette college univer sity of virginia second and state college third the carlisle in dians dickinson college and le high finished in the order named the boys are deserving of credit the work they did as it was not definitely decided until thurs day whether or not a relay team would be sent to philadelphia this gave them only one day for prac tice together in starting the time for the race was 3.28 4-5 which was only five seconds slower than the time for the championship race calendar wednesday may 2 1 p m mus tard and cheese rehearsal at opera house 3 p m inter-class track meet on lehigh field base ball — u of p at franklin field thursday may 3 athletic com mittee meeting friday may 4 9 p m sopho more cotillion at sun inn saturday may 5 3 p m base ball — lafayette college on lehigh field lacrosse — swarthmore at swarthmore 8 p m mustard and cheese production class day committee at a meeting of the senior class held after the college lecture on friday morning the following class day committee was chosen : c w barwis w c benedict s j cort m m farley j h c gregg and c m schoonover y m c a the y m c a meeting on sunday evening was given over to a discussion of true friendship lynch 08 led in the discussion he was followed by cupitt 06 ; daniels 07 l d moore 07 rey nolds 07 and small 09 all of whom brought forth good points in showing what true friendship really consists and what relation it bears to the life of ordinary man base ball lehigh 11 — new york univer sity 16 lehigh's base ball team was defeated by new york university by the score of 16 to 11 the game was characterized by the heavy batting of both teams as well as by their loose fielding in this latter lehigh was the worst offen der barker was very wild and gave twelve bases on balls while quinn who succeeded him con tributed three more uptegraff and gott both made three baggers though gott was caught out at the plate while trying to convert his into a home run in the fifth inning mower of new york university sprained his ankle in a collision with galbraith and was forced to retire the near sighted policy of sending our ath letic teams away short handed was clearly demonstrated in this game after quinn had been substituted for barker shields was hurt and forced to quit mackall going in to catch this left lehigh with only eight men playing as but ten men were taken on the trip and according to the rules no player is allowed to reenter a game having once been retired through the courtesy of new york university barker was allowed to play again going in at left field the score : lehigh loses to johns hopkins in hard game in the first game of the inter collegiate championship series played on the home grounds the lehigh lacrosse team suffered de feat at the hands of the johns hopkins university team in as fast and interesting a contest as has been seen on the local grounds in several years at about three o'clock the op posing teams appeared on the field and were loudly cheered by the large crowd who had come out to witness the game johns hopkins was the first to score after about 15 minutes of play mengel se cured the ball on a short pass and batted it into the goal being en tirely uncovered the second goal was made in a similar manner mengel being free for a shot car lock checked him fiercely but fell and mengel batted the ball into the goal porter after running straighten for 30 yards on a clean shot scored lehigh's only point after about 25 minutes of play lehigh played a hard and fa-t game in this half and had the ball fin their opponents territory over half of the time having more trials for goals than their opponents in the second half the game was faster than in the previous half but johns hopkins accurate passing and trials at goals netted them three points making the score at the end of the game 5-1 for johns hopkins dill and chesney excelled blank stopped some very good trials at goals for lehigh duncan excelled in carrying the ball the attack car ried the ball into the goal fre quently but the excellent defense put up by johns hopkins frus trated their attempts to score car-lock played a steady and sure game at goal stopping many diffi cult shots hendricks and john ston were right there every time the superior stick work of johns hopkins was a very potent factor in their victory duncan and barth time and again ran the length of the field with the ball there to have it passed back by good stick work on the part of their opponents johns hopkins always managed to have the extra man on the attack while advancing the ball with a referee who knew more about the game the contest might have been far more interesting notice the mustard and cheese dra matic club will give its annual performance saturday may 5 at 8 15 p m at the opera house south bethlehem " poland prof lamberton speaks on on last friday morning prof vv a lamberton now of the uni versity of pennsylvania and for merly professor of greek at lehigh delivered an extremely interesting lecture on " poland and its upris ings with special reference to the late prof severin ringer prof lamberton said that to fully under stand prof ringer's life here some thing must be known of the causes which led to his coming to this country the pole is a natural conspiritor and for three reasons the first is that there is no patriotism like the polish only to be compared to the strongest ties of human love the glories of former days and the degradations of the present are the other two causes poland of the early days was democratic there being no titles except those of other countries the nation made up the nobility and the king was compelled to obey its mandate there was much in common be tween the governments of rome and poland of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as an other illustration of their inde pendent laws they had an im promptu legislature or meeting which could be called by any one man and if desired this assemblage could institute legal rebellion against the ruling powers this belief that each man is the govern ment has sunk into the minds and hearts of the poles for centuries and it is natural that it should bring many troubles upon them then too they cannot forget past successes as when moscow itself was almost captured and when a polish army saved europe from the advancing hordes of the turks ) as an instance of the present state of affairs the owner of a house is not allowed to carry a latch key his every outgoing and return having to be reported to the police authorities in lithuania where the russian rule is most harsh a polish nobleman is not allowed to use his language in the bosom of his family for fear of spies these are some of the rea sons why the poles have desired to free their country and is it to be wondered at that they arc conspira tors ? continued on fourth page the sophomore
