base ball lehigh defeated by lafayette in a close exciting game the first game of the champion ship series between lehigh and le fayette resulted in a victory for the latter by the score of 4-2 the contest was a most spec tacular one and everything but fortune seemed to have decided on lehigh as victor from the first ball till the last strike was called lehigh played a steady and almost perfect game too much credit can not be given to the team's work both in the field and at the bat i esse was in the box for the brown and white and showed re markably good form and effective ness he allowed only six hits and those well scattered but two of them happened to be home runs lehigh played a good fielding game until the fourth when a hit combined with several misplays netted lafayette a run after that the playing was all that could be asked hesse started the game by strik ing out snook after giving him three balls the next two men were thrown out lehigh's half was started by a hit to right field by mackall kirk went out on a high fly to the pitcher mackall stole second and went to third on a high throw to second uptegraff picked out a nice one and sent it sailing over the fence for a home run scoring mackall gott struck out and gal braith was out at first mcavoy started the second in ning by driving a hot one to kirk wack filed out to kirk and peters struck out morsack and mussel man were both out at first on grounders to third and short shields flied out to moore in the third inning uptegrove went out on a high fly to kirk schneider hit safe between third and short moore hit to kirk and both men were out on a double play by kirk and gott in lehigh's half hesse bunted to hawk and was out at first by a close margin mackall flied out to mcavoy and kirk to peters in the fourth snook flied out to shields and kinsey's long drive was pulled down by mackall hawk hit safe in deep centre and reached second mcavoy hit to shields the ball passing between hawk's legs hawk scored on musselman's throw to catch mc continued on fourth page friday evening the muhlenberg and lehigh chapters of the alpha tau omega fraternity held a joint smoker at the lehigh chapter house continued on page three mustard and cheese be a great success annual performance proves to brown and white was the title of the twenty-first annual show given by the mustard and cheese dramatic association on saturday night the play is the work of thomas blame donaldson who also directed its production it is styled a musical farce-comedy in two acts and it certainly was every thing that these words would sug gest the scene of the first act is laid in the library of mr white's home at somewhere new york mr white has an eligible daughter who has the misfortune of having a number of suitors among these are a general an admiral a pugil ist a minister and last of all john brown 3d a lehigh senior the contest for winifred's hand offers the material for the greater part of the play after many laughable complications in which mandy mr white's cook and pug ryan figure quite prominently john brown and miss white are secretly mar ried although mr white feels bajd.ly about the entire affair he be stows his blessing upon the newly wedded couple and the play ends with lehigh as the grand finale the show was undoubtedly one of the best productions the associa tion has ever offered every mem ber of the cast was equal to the oc casion and merits the most favor able criticism the chorus too showed mr donaldson's conscien tious training and never faltered in its contribution to the whole effect the music was catchy the orches tra well balanced the costumes splendid and everything suggested rather a professional than an ama teur air the time of the action was on two successive evening meeting in christmas hall mr mcarthur took as his sub ject the significance of bible study he began by giving a brief history of the systematic study of the bible as carried on in our colleges and of the hold it has taken seeing the great number of men who take time to study the bible the question arises what are the needs which it satisfies ?" there are two very evident needs the intellectual and the moral in the first place a knowledge of the bible is essential to the edu cation of every man as a broad ening influence no better can be supposed its influence on litera ture and common speech is firm set and impeachable history re cords numberless incidents in which the bible was a potent factor it is one of the fundamental forces which have brought about our modern civilization but the bible has a far more im portant influence on men's lives in that it inculcates in them the true principles of morality every man knows that within himself there is a something which responds to the ideal and which he vaguely calls spirit that spirit needs cultivation and practice if it would maintain its existence nowhere can man's spiritual nature gain better training than in careful thoughful and sin cere study of the mandates of god as recorded by human hands in his word in a listless game lehigh loses to swarthmore the lacrosse team was defeated by swafthmore on saturday at ore by the score of 7 to o in a very rough and one-sided game at the end of the first half the score stood 6 to o in swarth nlore's favor in the second half however lchigh played a much stronger game and only one goal was scored swarthmore's center trio was too fast for their opponents and were able to make a free man both on the attack and defense le high's attack played a hard game but were covered too closely and only had two shots at the goal one of which hit the goal-tender while the other went wide barth was taken ill before the game and after only a few minutes of play was forced to retire mor ris going in at center within a few minutes he was crosschecked and his nose broken but he finished out the game playing a remarkably fast hard game notwithstanding the whole team fought fiercely to the end but were manifestly out played in the second half hendricks was forced to retire and swarthmore in sisted on barth going back into the game instead of taking off one of
