philip j berg m e was elect ed president of the interfraternity council at a meeting held at 7:30 last night in drown hall other officers chosen were q john schwarz m e vice-president charles c hilton met e secre tary and robert l smith c e treasurer berg is captain-elect of the soc cer team and has been on the wrestling team for several years he is a member of delta upsilon social fraternity the council voted to donate 100 to the red cross in addition to the money which has already been given by various student organ izations this most recent donation is from the profits of the inter fraternity ball propose fraternity co-op suggestions were made for a sort of loose corporation arrange ment to protect the off-campus fraternities which will not be tak en over by the army or the uni versity it may be possible to work out something with a coop erative buying system which will enable all houses to work together to cover any small losses which may develop for further discus sion of this suggestion a meeting will be held of the house pres idents and local alumni advisors on wednesday april 21 e ken neth smiley director of admis sions will at that time present his proposal for relief of the situ ation the officers of last year's inter fraternity council presented dr claude g beardslee the faculty advisor with a clock with a silver dedication plate in making the presentation thomas m buck m e 43s ex-president of the council thanked dr beardslee for his untiring efforts on behalf of the interfraternity council red cross gets 100 gift given to beardslee philip berg is elected by if council first of series of student life murals on display the first of a projected series of mural panels depicting various phases of lehigh student life has been installed in the fine arts studio on the top floor of coppee hall the panel was painted by charles thompson i.e 43 co-art editor of the bachelor the painting shows a student at his study-desk surrounded by registration cards textbooks slide-rule and t-square smaller faculty necessitates 16 week terms--congdon the main reason for having one 16-week term this summer instead of two eight-week terms as was done last year is the inability of the decreased faculty to handle the tremendous rostering task that the latter would create reasons and explanations were set forth by dean wray h congdon in an interview recently the task of rostering faculty will be much more difficult this sum mer than last because of a smaller staff possibly three different scho lastic terms will be in operation at once the regular semester from june 24 to oct 13 the six-weekb summer-session from june 24 to august 5 and one of several twelve week terms for army trainees it would be impossible to carry this load along with the heavy schedules often set up by eight-week terms no more concentration since the whole university is now on the accelerated program the need for having a divided semester so that a student could take a whole year's course in a certain subject in one semester is gone last summer it was ar odk will choose 5 juniors revised point list released the spring elections of omicron delta kappa national honorary leadership society will be held wednesday april 28 at sigma chi and public tapping ceremonies will follow during flag pole day exer cises april 30 from three to five men from the class of 1944 will be shosen it was disclosed by samuel j davy e e 43 president a revised point list criterion for election was released follow ing the last meeting only non accelerated juniors are eligible for selection initiation ceremonies and the spring banquet will occur sunday may 2 at a time and place to be announced points must be submitted to the arcadia office before saturday noon in order to be considered for election the revised list follows general rules 1 character shall be the primary require ment for membership in this fraternity no person shall be eligible for active mem ership until he has been in residence at ohigh university at least one year and anks in the highest 35 percent in scholar ihip in his college all applicants will or linarily submit their scholastic average for ive semesters applicants who have fulfilled he residence requirement but have not com peted five semesters at lehigh must have funior standing and their scholastic average continued on page 4 ranged that students could take subjects such as mil 3 and 4 in one semester so that they could enter advanced military in the fall last reason is that last summer it was desirable to have short terms so that students who might be taken from school by draft or calling of reserves could complete a few courses rather than ake parts of a greater number of sub jects this year the number of men who are liable to be called from school is considerably small er than last so there was no need to hold short terms for their ben efit astp wins dodd's praise subjects taught to basic men in the army specialized training program which will probably bring a contingent of men to the lehigh campus early in may are made up of stiff courses in science mathematics history english and geography and are not to be con sidered as propaganda courses according to president harold w dodds president of princeton uni versity and the lehigh commence ment speaker for this year although at first the army pro gram especially was criticized as being anti-cultural dr dodds defends both the army and the navy programs as being as cul tural as possible under the cir cumstances the courses to be taught will give an opportunity for us to pre pare young men for warfare with a well-grounded understanding of the cause for which we are fight ing far beyond what was attained in the war-aims courses of the last war dr dodds says shields outlines local musical development pointing out that many of the founders of bethlehem were tal ented musicians loving music so much that they often went into their ploughed fields playing mu sical instruments dr t edgar shields director of music stressed the development of music in bethlehem at a talk wednesday morning at the moravian college for women when bethlehem was founded music was about the only means of recreation and it meant a great deal to people dr shields told the coed student group probably the first symphony composed in america was from the pen of an early bethlehem organist john frederick peter dr shields said tau beta pi engineering hon orary will hold its spring elec tion smoker tomorrow night in drown hall all seniors acceler ated juniors and juniors who are eligible will receive invitations to the smoker which will be held for the purpose of acquainting pres ent members with prospective members professor j lynford beaver acting head of the department of electrical engineering benjamin l miller professor of geology and walton forstall jr instruc tor in mechanical engineering will explain some of tau beta pi's fundamental principles and some of the association's interesting history on the lehigh campus the lehigh chapter pennsylvania alpha is the parent chapter of the organization now represented in 77 leading technical colleges of the country according to the constitution of tau beta pi the first fifth of the senior and accelerated junior classes and the first eighth of the regular juniors and accelerated sophomores are eligible for elec tion m & c redecorates h s auditorium in preparation for its next pre sentation bottoms up the mus tard and cheese stage crew is re decorating broughal high school auditorium curtains have been hung from the balcony to cut off the outer rows of seats there are three reasons for this action not only will it cut off bad seats but it will also improve acoustics and from a purely decorative point of view the audi torium will be much more attrac tive at 12:30 saturday night at the prom dance a preview of the forthcoming production will be given some of the songs and routines of the show will be pre sented according to h chester lucks m.e 45 publicity manager for the production costumes for the extravaganza have been purchased from the zeigfield follies at a cost of over three hundred dollars no ex pense is being spared to produce the cream of the recent offerings of the society there will definitely be a jun ior prom announced bernard j egan met.e chairman of the committee after a committee meeting held friday night at the phi delta theta house the pre sale of tickets proved to be enough to give dean wray h congdon a guarantee that the dance would be a financial success tickets for the dance may now be bought at the door on the night of the dance or from arcadia or supply bureau for 4.40 per couple all service men are again urged to attend the affair the price for men in any branch of the service will remain at 2.20 a couple the dance will be in formal and corsages will not be permitted it is believed that the bands will prove to be even better than was expected jimmie lunceford appeared at perm state junior senior prom during this past weekend and was a tremendous success once again he proved his versatility that has carried him from a collegiate band at fisk university to the top his slow numbers were ultra-slaw and were very melodic and danceable his jazz specialties are the type of outstanding arrangements that have always made people stand around and gape or if they are so inclined go crazy over on the dance floor lunceford is college sensation lunceford is capable of creat ing quite a sensation among col lege students as evidenced by the many times he has appeared at texas duke clemson yale cor nell and lafayette his greatest following during the past year has been students since he has de voted most of his time on week ends in travelling around the eastern collegiate circuit harry romig the second band should be a big surprise to many lehigh men romig's outfit is a local band which has been climb ing steadily in quality romig plays a sweet clarinet and his trumpet often gives the band a stj r le similar to that of harry james his orchestra is an all round good dance band it is not a spectacular outfit but the boys play well both sweet and hot dotty speck his vocalist has been singing around these parts for the last two or three years and can really warble a sweet tune checking plans different the checking for the junior prom will be handled ditferently from previous years the upper floor of grace hall will be the spot for checking all clothing the military classrooms facing taylor gym are to be used exclu sively all the coat racks will be in the one spot and the usual confusion after the dance will not result couples will find it easier to mill around the dance floor while waiting for
