when mustard and cheese produces bottoms up it will not be the first time that the music and words for one of their productions have come from the pens of lehigh students in 1936 three years after dramatics-director al rights came to lehigh he started looking for a musical comedy for the club to pro duce the idea that the show should be written by a lehigh student was far from his mind then one afternoon in september ralph sked gell 36 walked into rights offi ce and handed him six songs and the draft of a first act the club went for it in a big way and when skedgell finished writing it prom trotters went into production it was a bril liant success the following year m & c start ed looking for new writing talent and a number of would-be lyric and playwrights tried their hands david hughes 38 came along with the most promising group of songs and boys in babe land started rehearsals like prom trotters it was a howling suc cess in the years that have followed rights has stuck to the offerings of professional playwrights for his scripts this year enthusiasm over a strictly from lehigh production has run high and mustard and cheese is sure that it can at least match its two previous offerings price — 5 cents bethlehem pa tuesday march 30 1943 vol l — no 43 jim lunceford will play at junior prom john brownlee . . . . . . singe at scl frida army navy offer tests this week scl presents noted baritone john brownlee baritone will be featured on the student lec ture-concert series friday eve ning at 8 15 o'clock in the broug hal junior high school auditorium born in australia brownlee has literally sung all over the world with the greatest opera companies of most of the leading nations in cluding the new york metropoli tan san francisco and chicago opera companies in america brownlee is an advocate of singing operas in english rather than in their native tongues as long as suitable words can be found without distorting the translation is ace golfer not only a singer brownlee lays claim to distinction for being the southpaw golfing champion of the british isles a world-traveler who stills prefers austrialia to all other places and a certified ac countant brownlee's program will proo ably feature parts from such fa mous operas as la traviata lucia di lammermoor car men the marriage of figaro madame butterfly don gio vanni and la boheme during the past summer brownlee sang in roles from fi garo and barber of seville in central city colo at the fa mous summer music festival he was the first britisher ever tc be attached to the paris grand opera's permanent roster will give any course if demand is sufficient courses may be offered here during four of the six weeks va cation between may 20 and june 23 if there is sufficient demand according to a letter sent to a large proportion of the students from the registrar's office this program is aimed primar ily to aid students who entered at half or odd semesters and those who have failed one or more sub jects mr curtis suggests that a continuation of academic work may in some cases lead draft boards to renew 2-a deferments which would otherwise be lost and also points out that those stu dents with prerequisite difficul ties might gain by the short sem ester as the university will em bark on a completely accelerated program starting june 24 this will be the last opportunity for students to catch up between terms most students attending this doubly accelerated session are ex pected to take only one course but two or even three in extreme cases may be allowed the fees for this tentative program will be on an hourly basis either a 12.50 per credit hour maximum or the old summer school rate of 10.00 an hour are most probable choices dormitories not available as the dormitories hold 453 men and 400 plus advanced r o t c men are expected it is al most certain that dormitory ac commodations and with them lamberton hall will not be avail able some houses might find it profitable to take on boarders dur ing such a session thus easing their financial and students hous ing problems the courses which registrar's letter underlined as possibilities were freshman and sophomore courses but upperclassmen are to understand that any course for which there is a sufficient articu late demand will be given all freshman and sophomore math and physics courses as well as all freshman chemistry english and civil engineering courses were on the list as most likely to be given 4 week term offered in may june to select training program eligibles prospective students for the army specialized training pro gram and the navy college train ing program will take qualifying examinations in packard labora tory auditorium and in other rooms to be announced at 8:30 friday morning april 2 accord ing to dean wray h congdon lehigh students not already in one of the armed services and between the ages of 17 and 20 are urged to take the examination results of the tests will be used as material for recommendation when a student reports for duty stu dents whose test records are avail able have an added chance to gain admission to officer's candidate school or the army specialized training program since there will be no delay in completing his rec ords last tests for a while the army and the navy will pay all expenses at the college of students selected on the basis of the tests friday according to dean congdon since there will be no further tests for some months all high school students or recent graduates will have to take the april 2 examinations to quali fy for this training this is an excellent opportunity for every ambitious boy especially for those who are likely to be drafted within the next year purpose of the tests is to aid in the selection of prospective officer material for the army navy marine corps and coast guard the examinations are designed to test the aptitude and general knowledge of the candidates who who will express a choice for the army or navy at the time of the examinations those who are se lected for either the astp or the navy college training program will attend college with all ex penses paid by the respective services 3 groups to take test three groups of students are invited to take the tests friday 1 high school graduates who will be at least 17 but nor more than 20 by july 1 regardless of whether they are now attending college 2 high school seniors who will graduate by july 3 and students between 17 and 20 now attending college or univer sity a navy applicant if he passes the test successfully will be given a physical examination and inter view at a later date if enlisted he will be activated and sent back to college in uniform with pay with tuition board and room paid this activation will take place not earlier than july 1 1943 and not later than march 1 1944 harry romig to be second band for dance difficulty experienced in signing contracts double drills for r.o.t.c all rotc students including advanced and basic will have two drills a week according to cap tain john f schwartz assistant professor of military science and tactics the request of colonel fay w brabson was approved monday afternoon by president clement c williams and extra drill will start on thursday of this week the colonel made the request so that the rotc unit will be better prepared for the war department inspection which will take place on april 26 the extra drills will be held each thursday in addition to the regular monday afternoon drills and will be discontinued after the inspection next bachelor is houseparty horror following closely on the heels of the new yorker edition of the bachelor another issue of the campus humor publication is slat ed for monday april 10 the april issue will be dedicated to houseparty and the issue will bear the title houseparty hor ror the publication will be devoted to the gruesome bizarre gory mysterious and such according ; to earle wallick editor the is sue was originally to be dedicated to the incoming army specialized program but the delay in the serviceman's reaching the campus brought a change in publication ; plans \ the new yorker issue out this week edited by fiction editor jack kennedy is only one of many parody issues coming out throughout the country including the yale record's take-off in the reader's digest and northwes tern u's purple parrot's satire on screenland o minor measles epidemic affects 32 students results of the recent german measles epidemic at the uni versity have just been posted by dr raymond c bull director of the students health service dr bull says the cases can hardly be called a real epidemic since most of the epidemics of the past have consisted of well over a hundred cases of the spots thirty-two cases were reported as of march 23 the peak of the epidemic was reached on march 16 on which day four cases were reported i jimmie lunceford and harry romig have been chosen as the bands for the junior prom on april 17 in grace hall anounced bernard j egan met e chairman of the prom committee the contracts were 1 signed after much deliberation and were sent on to new york lunceford is well known throughout the country having been play ! ing at colleges and ball rooms since 1934 when they filled in for cab calloway at the cotton club and were a hit contrary to popular opin ion the band has not changed much over the years it has man aged to maintain its high ranking since the time when it got its start as a matter of fact five of the original nine members of the first band are still playing with jim mie after graduating from fisk uni versity in memphis where he was a four-letter man lunceford or ganized his first orchestra the group consisted mostly of studerils from fisk ana they managed to scrape along on small jobs that was in 1927 the versatile lunceford is known as having one of the finest and most colorful swing bands the great variety and musician ship displayed by lunceford's or chestra is the thing that has kept the name in the spotlight has toured abroad the band has toured denmark sweden norway holland and france but the biggest success has been among the american col leges lunceford has played at cornell six times three of them consecutively he was a big suc cess in two engagements at la fayette and appeared at the uni versity of texas eleven times in six years in addition to these jimmie has played the eastern college circuit steadily for the past few years besides his distinctive dance music lunceford features a glee club a quartet a trio and dan grissom grissom is terrific on the ballad numbers and really rolls the vocals out harry romig the second bans is an outfit well-known to all le high men he has played here on many occasions and is one of the foremost bands in the valley romig will bring with him his entire orchestra the band is big ger than before and there are sev eral good vocalists to warble out his sweet danceable music in the smaller band class romig is noted for his versatility and good arrangements lehigh moravian glee clubs give joint dance all lehigh students are invited to attend a combined concert and dance to be given by the lehigh and moravian college for women glee clubs saturday evening april 3 in drown hall the con cert is scheduled for 8 o'clock and the dance from 9:30 until 1 with glen gardner's orchestra playing admission to the dance is free with athletics cards serving as identification no stags will be allowed prof thomas e shields will di rect the combined concert in charge of dance arrangements are william r williams arts 43 os car summers e.e 44x and joseph goth arts 44 for lehigh and miss marilyn weddigen for moravian about 150 new frosh expected this summer between 125 and 150 freshman are expected to enter lehigh at the beginning of the summer semester according to e kenneth smiley director of admissions the effect of the war on the number of students entering col lege following telegram was received by the university concerning the change in the arrival of army trainees next month check 53 some educational institutions which were surveyed for participation in the
