the scoring in the second half can be accounted for mainly by en durance which is the ultimate factor in favor of any heavy team when playing a lighter and less rugged opponent pyne waters and bla zer were carried from the field after they were unable to walk off of their own accord smith of perm finally left the game on ac count of injuries while several men were disqualified for rough playing . the details of the game were as follows : both teams played erratic mak ing every play seem an uncertainty but our opponents had in reserve that self-confidence which always comes to men of experience and which is generally found lacking in learners lehigh won the toss and cho to defend the east goal perm kicked off to stanford who fun bled but gott fell on the ball for lehigh bartman and waters gained ten yards in plunges througj the line perm seemed to be imablt to stop the lehigh backs from ma ing their distance blazer went ten yards through left guard bartram made 4 more and the ball was in the centre of the funds raised for cage on friday morning at 1 1 o'clock a well-attended college meeting was held in the physical laboratory for the purpose of discussing plans by which money could be raised for the erection of a cage on the ath letic field last spring a committee was ap po.nted by the athletic association to erect a field house and cage from funds in their judgment available for that purpose no time limit for wi,;jici;oii of the work was ec but the committee recognizing the need of such buildings set to work at once this fall when the students re turned to college they were greeted by a fine new field house the foundations have been laid for the cage but the funds are exhausted at a meeting of the athletic.as sociation on thursday evening it was found that a cage could be erected for 4,500 about 1,000 dollars can be depended on from the foot ball season the commit tee consisting of messrs thorn burg foermg and johnson prom ised to raise 1,500 among the alumni if the student body would raise the remaining 2,000 the meeting friday morning was called to look into the matter after a few introductory remarks by president berg of the senior cjass kirk 05 senior athletic representative was called to the floor he spoke of the untiring ef forts of the committee for the con struction of the much-needed build ings and of the great benefits such buildings will be to the spring ath letics he further stated that if the building is to be built before janu ary the first 4,500 must be had before november the first only 2,000 of which must come from the student body kirk then sug gested as a plan by which this could be raised that every man in college give at least four dollars in four weekly in stallments before november the first at this juncture prof thorn l.'urg entered the room and was asked to speak amid the greatest enthusiasm he outlined the project and told what was neded in con cluding he started the subscription with a ten-dollar bill the suggestion of kirk was then unanimously adopted the college roll was called and each man an swered yes or no according as he wished to subscribe or not over 1,600 was subscribed and a com mittee of sixty was appointed to collect it college note a block of granite weighing over twelve tons was used in con structing the california hall a new lu'ming recently erected by the university of california it is one of the largest pieces of granite ever quarried in california and came from near yosemite valley it was used in the arch over the main en trance the committee is composed of n m merriman chairman dent harrison and enlse 05 ; ; mackall pattison s w brown mcfarlane ealston f j wiison carlock bayless s o smith these fifteen men will meet some time in the near future and wili ckct officers and about twenty more men from their own class these thirty-five or more men will constitute the club which will prob ably give two dances during the college year these dances will be held if the same custom as has been adhered to in past years is con tinued the first in the early part of december and the second in the latter part of april only members and past members of the club are invited to attend the dances the statement of the treasurer m deß evans 06 showed the finances of the club to be in excel lent condition all bills contracted in the two dances held last year have been paid and there is a small surplus in the treasury which will probably be given to the incoming treasurer to aid in making this gear's dances as successful as last year's which were as enjoyable as any ever given at lehigh college reception chess club organized a meeting was held last thurs day night m the forum room to organize a chess c üb a number of men attended and the outlook for a flourishing society is very promising l d moore : oy was ejected chairman pro tern and ap pointed a committee to draw up a temporary iconstitution which was clone at once the officers for the year were then elected as follows merriman 05 president schwarze 05 vice-president rich 05 secretary lauer 06 treasurer and moore 07 fifth member of the executive commit tee the club will probably meet every two weeks throughout the year the executive committee will announce the date of the first meet ing in a few days and it is hoped that every one interested in the game will turn out with good support the club may be able to arrange an inter-collegi ate tcontest with the university of pennsylvania or lafayette and if this is the case every good player in college will be needed any members of the faculty who may bo interested are also cordially in vited to join the club and give the members the benefit of their ad vice continued on fourth page lehigh o — u of p 24 philadelphia society took advan tage of the good foot ball weather on saturdays to seethefirst biggame of the season on franklin field the grand stands gave the contest the aspect of a championship match cheers and songs of the rival col leges filling the air during the rather frequent time outs which occurred during the game the game was a pleasant sur prise to the lehigh supporters who on the face of last wednesday's performance expected a rather easy victory for perm the victory was by no means easy the score being entirely too large considering the relative merits of the two teams from the kickoff until after the first 15 minutes of play had elapsed lehigh put up a splendid game — o>;e much superior to her opponents in fact all during the first half tlic playing was nip and tuck perm scoring not by mass plays but by long runs coupled with clever dodg ing and interference through a somewhat broken and mixed field this indeed is one of the remark able features of the game consider ing the experience and weight of our opponents no 6
