lehigh o — haverford 6 saturday was indeed a day of surprises in the foot ball world but the greatest surprise of all at least from a local standpoint,was haver ford's victory over lehigh with every expectation of victory and remote possibility of being scored on the result is more surprising as in the last game with haverford she went down to ignominious de feat by the most overwhelming score of 39-0 it would be folly to attemnt to tell just why lehieh lost as the reason is too firmly fixed in the minds of the 800 spec tators present haverford out weighed us and outgeneraled us in every department of the game and gained a well-merited victory the absence of qkpt waters and some other veterans of course contributed to lehigh's downfall but does not in the least detract from haverford's credit the game was very rough in every de partment and many a foul was committed under cover unknown to the referee or umt>ire person was disqualified in the second half for roughness the day was hardly what may be termed ideal for foot ball as the cool crisp october winds had not yet arrived to instill ginger into the players haverford was accompanied by a small but enthusiastic band of rooters and at no time during the contest did interest la lowery was the star of the game with pyne a close sec ond time and again would hav trford's captain hurdle the line and gain his distance and at no time was he seriously layed out pyne particularly distinguished himself by his long end runs and gained more ground than any other man on the team lehigh's hopes were indeed dashed to the round when he was forced to retire in the sec ond half on account of injuries , haverford won the toss , and chose to defend the western goai there was only a slight breeze but this did not materially affect the flaying haverford kicekd off to kirk who advanced the ball 12 yards before being downed rushes by blazer and kirk advanced th ball 8 yards : and here the brown and white received its first sur prise as they were held for downs haverford in turn could do nothing so tried a goal from the field which resulted in a~miserable failure the ball seesawed across the field until continued on fourth page given by the y m c a the association gave its first re ception of the year to the students and faculty of the university with tie freshmen as soecial guests iij he gymnasium on saturday even i rig october 1 v the committee ru charge planned to make it a large college affair and their efforts were entirely successful the gymna sium was decorated with the le high colors and penants galore the earlier part of the evening was spent in becoming acquainted 1 with many of the new men and making them feel that they were a part of the life at lehisrh norman merriman the chairman of the vommittee who also had charge of the program called on general secretary iidmoncis ior opening re marks in , response he said thai the occasion was not intends for speech-making but for a good social time in a few words he not only warmb welcomed the people gathered together on this occasion but spoke of the increasing interest that the association was receiving by the college at large and showed hat it n-as in turn interested in ai 1 the college men whether good ad or indifferent the musical part of the program consisted of selections by the mus tard and cheese quintette com posed of kirk payne ryan wat son and reel a solo by miss brinkenstein from bethlehem anil instrumental music by herman ryder and bayliss of the mandolin club every part was heartily en cored especially the quintette and all the responses were equally well appreciated clarke gave a recita tion in negro dialect in his usually entertaining style refreshments of ice cream cake and coffee were then served a large force was necessary to sup ply the demands of the fellows above but after a short time a feel ing of deep satisfaction was notice able in the fellows and after ex pressing their appreciation for the good time they soon took their leave there were about three hundred and fifty fellows present besides members of the faculty and their wives among whom were dr drown and professors merriman esty richards franklin gauss and others the committee and those who as dsted in the entertainment deserve great credit for their efforts and no doubt feel fully repaid by the success of the reception lehigh university epitome south bethlehem pa monday october 17 1904 college reception foot ball vol xii the brown and white calendar tuesday october 18 at 5 p m brown and white board meeting at brown and white rooms christ mas hall wednesday oct 19 at 7.30 p n civil engineering society meet ing at 7.30 p m electrical engi neering society meeting in physi cal laboratory . , :;. ;. thursday oct 20 at 7.30 pi m nrum meeting at saucon hall saturday oct 21 foot ball game at ; west point o annapolis 10 princeton 9 yale 17 syracuse 9 pennsylvania 6 brown o dickinson 57 franklin and marshall o cornell 24 bucknell 12 lafayette 33 bloomsburg state ormal o georgetown 17 ; villa nova o swarthmore 40 delaware col lege o indians 100 albright o the result of saturday's elec tion was as follows merriman athletic representative at large tunstall asistant manager of the base ball team gott assistant manager of the lacrosse team continued on third page plans for 1906 book for the benefit of the members of the class of 1908 and also those of the upper classes who from the poor sales of last year apparently never have heard of it it might be stated that the epitome is an an nual published by the junior class ci lehigh university as its name implies it is r sort of summary of the year's coiiege life giving class histories the enrollment fraternity and society . tmbership and so on at a recent meeting of the board of editors ways and means were discussed for preventing the 1906 epitome from being largely a col lection of statistics it was sug gested that ihe best way to do this would be to give more attention to the personal gag and literary departments of course this has been the endeavor of many boards in years past an endeavor success fully carried out or not according to the aid rec ived from the student body with ut it the books would have been flat failures there are several ways in which this support can ge given no en terprise can be run on brother love without some outward and visible signs cf the same and so it will do lots of good if when you hear that epitome tickets are out you will produce your little ro 1 l of bills and go away with one of those tickets in your inside pocket then there is the matter of gags freshmen have you no ticed a little box in packer hail named gag box very well con tinue to observe it closely then when one of your classmates re marks in chemical lab the book says this gas is odorless won der what's the matter with it i can't smell it at all or makes some equally amusing remark record the same 6n a piece of paper and drop it into the gag box tt will then be placed upon record in the epi tome to be handed down for the edification of future generations last but by no means leasi comes the question of literary aid that is the department most likely to cause the editors trouble arid loss of sleep the junior class elected that board under the im pression that it was getting^hold of the literary talent cf the class : bur it made a horrible mistake at least that is the board's private opinion so now it is up to the junior class in particular to scratch their heads and write po.-ms and stories for the no 8
