first meeting of the year the first regular meeting of the civil engineering society for the present college year was held on wednesday evening in the forum room the meeting was called older by president henderson the election of new members was the first business brought before the society professor wilson mr turrill and mr gay were elected together with the sophomores of the civil and mining department and the eligible new men of the up per classes mr rice was elected advisor to the society from tru faculty ' mr henderson then briefly out lined the plans of the society for the present year he said that the object was to learn something and to have a better time doing it than in regular class work there will be nine meetings during the year and at each one special events of engineering will be discussed at the end of the course there will be a spiel instead of an examination three or four papers will be read at each meeting generally by mem bers of the society in professor merriman's ab sence professor wilson spoke a few words he said that the ad vantage of such a society was very great especially to men pursuing an engineering course the greatest advantage that can be derived by the members is to practice and cul tivate the power of expressing themselves clearly and to prove their points so that other people must believe them he then out lined in an interesting way the sanitary system of a city of 60,000 inhabitants situated in the andes mountains the water system of this city comprises several via ducts leading from the mountain to a large basin in the centre of the plaza in the city the natives carry all their drinking water from this basin in jars the remainder flows through a viaduct under one of the principal streets every here and there a slab is missing where the natives get their water for other purposes than drinking the re fuse is gathered in vessels and emptied into these same openings and it is only because the water in the viaduct flowls very rapidly that serious epidemics do not occur harrowcr then read an interest ing paper on land marking for the octorano water co the company has bought up land for a democrats organize continued on third page flourishing club organized amid great enthusiasm mani fested in the form of loud cheers and prolonged hurrahs there was organized at charlie's last tuesday night a new club at lehigh to be known as the lehigh university parker club the meeting of the organizers was fairly well attended and what was lacking in numbers was made up in enthusiasm a p smith 05 was elected chairman pro tern he appointed a constitution committee : schwarze 05 ; spilsbury 05 ; and j h walker 05 and a yell committee : smith 05 ; kline 05 and merri man 05 while the constitutional committee was conferring the yell committee composed the following yell : tiger tiger sis boom bah parker parker rah rah rah the yell was very popular and was repeated many timies during the course of the evening making the house ring with the sound after adopting the constitution the officers were elected as follows : president a p smith 05 loud cheers on announcement of mr smith's election ; vice-president spilsbury 05 ; secretary j h walker 05 grand marshal w c kline 05 ; and aides to grand marshal hodgkin 05 ; schwarze 05 ; enke 05 ; harrison 05 ; mer riman 05 and gilmore 06 the honorable allen brooks parker of nejwi york was unanimoulsly elected honorary member of the club amid loud and prolonged cheering many tigers and howls of keep the niggers out of the white house the president was obliged to rap for order many times after the presentation of mr par ker's name before quiet was re stored the grand marshal an nounced that a peerade would be held after adjournment and also one on thursday afternoon at 4.30 to form at packer hall the only unpleasant incident of the evening was the attempt of the republicans to break up the meet ing some four belated all that attended the organization of the republican club thinking to dis turb the peace of the meeting of the democrats came in and made a lamentable attempt to rush the par kerites but were instantly quelled by superior numbers and obliged to furnish entertainment for the club in the form of music for the rest of the meeting after the meeting there was held a parade leonard b trebane night city editor of the new york times died monday october 17 mr trebane graduated from lehigh with the class of 1880 who had positions during the summer on account of the demand for er.gineers in the field of mining a number of the present senior min ers secured positions for the sum mer months with various mining companies and were thus excused from taking the regular summer school in mine surveying and railroads dean corsa worked with the le high valley coal co surveying corps at hazleton pa making sur veys in and around the collieries at that place e m johnson and w j yon berries w 7 ere both employed by the wind rock coal and coke co of wind rock term on survey ing and construction wiork incident to the opening up of a new coal field in that district the mana ger of the above company is l\ir c 11 thompson lehigh 94 at one time captain of our base ball team p g spilsbury was employed by the el oro mining and railway co of el oro mexico upon mill ing and mining work r c kautz was employed by the moweaqua coal mining and mfg co of moweaqua 111 on survey ing work in and around the mines the regular summer school in mine surveying was held at hazle ton in june through the courtesy of the lehigh valley coal co the class was permitted to make its surveys in one of the collieries near that place entrance to the mine was made through a slope and the ride in the slope car on entering and leaving the mine was one of i he features of each shift the work was conducted at night the shift lasting from 7 p m until 3 or 4 a.m by so doing the regu lar working of the mine was not interfered with somewhat over a mile of underground workings were covered by the class in mak ing its survey side trips were made to the hazleton shaft breaker to the famous no 40 pumps to the steam shovel strippings where the coal is worked in open cut and also to the famous iron breaker at drifton . the party consisted of messrs corsa fouse gaumer kautz pen nypacker and saffold and prof eckfeldt macintosh 07 was operated on for appendicitis last tuesday the operation was a successful one and mac is getting along fine lehigh university south bethlehem pa friday october 21 1904 senior miners vol xii calendar no 9 the brown and white saturday oct 22 foot ball game — princeton vs lehigh at princeton sunday oct 23 at 9.15 a m bible study classes in christmas hall at 6.30 p m y m c a meet ing in christmas hall tuesday oct 25 at 5 p rru brown and white board meeting in christmas hall saturday oct 29 at 3 p m foot ball game — dickinson vs lehigh on lehigh field fall lacrosse practice taking advantage of the ideal weather of the past number of days captain estes issued a call for fall lacrosse practice for monday at 4p m a large number of can didates responded consisting of the veterans of last season's var sity and the remaining members of the squad billy miller the old lacrosse man of championship days was on hand to assist in the coaching light work was clone on monday with heavier practice on tuesday and wednesday afternoons the showing on the whole was good a very great effort will be made to turn out a championship team next spring and captain estes u:ges that every man in college who has any inclination toward lacrosse whatever shall report freshmen particularly are advised to purchase sticks and get an idea of the game every position in the varsity is open and new men will be afforded every opportunity to win the coveted l y m c a harlan p beach educational secretary of the student volunteer movement for foreign missions will address the meeting sunday evening mr beach graduated at yale about ib6o and since that time has been engaged in mission ary wiork he has written several books on this subject and is counted as an authority on missions a good atetndance is desired as mr beach is a fine speaker and has been with us on former occasions continued on fourth page c e society
