continued on fourth page successful meeting held the first college smoker of the season was held in the gym on friday evening in preparation for the dickinson game on saturday after three rousing lehighs had been given the minstrel show quartet rendered several selections in their usual pleasing manner this was followed by a short speech by dr newton he spoke of the hard luck the team has had and the trouble in developing a team from new material in clos ing he compared the team to a rat in a corner and the way that rat could fight any one who saw the game on saturday well knows a basket ball gamie was played betwleen the sophomores and freshmen from the start the freshmen had a little the better nf it but the game was hotly contested throughout the score at the end of the first half was 14 to 7 in favor of the freshmen in the second half neither side had much of an advantage and the goals were al most all thrown on difficult shots the half ended with the score 22 to 14 in the freshmen's favor for the freshmen long and priestly c'id the best work while for the sophomores travis and hartzell excelled the line-uo 1907 1908 balston forward trotitman ochs forward long hanst hays center priestly pierce hartzell guard mcmurtrie laubenstein travis guard anderson goals from field hartzell 4 balston travis priestly 3 troti man 2 long 3 anderson 2 from fouls travis hartzell an derson long referee clay ; um pire mcmullen next on the orogram was a box ing match between fernandes of the new york a c and bixler of the broadway a c it was very exciting throughout the four rounds and ended in a draw white 05 was referee after several college songs had been sung and short speeches made by berg saffold and adams the smoker adjourned to have a pa rade the line was mar^aled out side of the gym and marched through several of the streets of south bethlehem then across the river to bethlehem and back over the toll bridge after a long march and much cheering the parade dis banded miners organize continued on fourth page new engineering society a meeting of the senior junior and sophomore miners was held in williams hall last thursday even ing in spite of a math quiz which prevented a full attendance of the sophomores and unfortu nately sonse of the juniors about twenty-four men were present professor eckfeldt professor irv ing and mr brown were also there the meeting was called to order and election of officers first taken up the result was as follows : president r c kautz 05 vijce-president m deß evans l.6 secretary w j yon borrics 05 treasurer c m johnson 05 a committee was then appointed to draw up a constitution after which professor eckfeldt was called upon to address the meeting f e spoke of former societies of this kind which had existed at various times at lehigh and of the object of such an organization he said that the mining course was one of he broadest in the university add : ■sr if you don't know it now you will before you get through need less to say we all agreed he sug gested that since geology and min •.>;
