lafayette's line she gets the ball lafayette falls and that's a very good sign that lehigh is the only thing in the good old foot ball time ]•. h s y m c a mr wellington h tinker,of the students club new york city addressed the regular meeting of the association on sunday evening he was warmly welcomed by the students with many of whom he had become personally acquainted in his previous visit to lehigh he extended to the fellows the good wished of the last year's gen eral secretary mr frank c gil bert with whom mr tinker is a tociated in student work mr edmonds announced that all bible classes wil meet in christ mas hall on next sunday morning where the joint meeting will be ad dressed by state secretary miller the associations of lehigh and lafayette will hold a joint bible institute at lafayette on novem ber 1 2th and 13th the men in terested are urged to attend as a good program has been prepared cind no one will be disappointed in attending the lsafayette asso ciation will see that all the lehigh visitors are well cared for and en tertained the first session begins on saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock last year a similar institute was held at lehigh " monopoly and popular gov ernment on friday morning 1 , november 4th prof john p clarke of co lumbia university delivered a lec ture on monopoly and popular government in part he spoke as follows the coming national election will de cide some issues of more moment than has any other election of the last half century it is doubtful hether there is any party of note in this country which advocates free trade tariff reform is preached by both the great parties although they claim to disagree on the method and degree of reduction .. if we can imagine a strange ani mal possessed of an owl's face with long sharp horns a human frame with two legs and a long tail terminating in the form of an ar row we will have a political carri cature of the so-called monopoly if we can further imagine this ani mal reaching out with one hand to protect himself from the apparent onslaught of two great parties each of which claim to be his enemy de sirous of making an end of him while the other hand is behind his back engaged in handing to these enemies liberal contributions to ward campaign funds we will gain a : correct idea of what each party is accused of by the other . as a matter of fact the average person of to-day fails to distinguish between the trust and monopoly for party issues we must have defi nite issues a speaker cannot make fine dislcrim^natiions between two popular closely allied institutions one of which is a menace and the ovher a help to prosperity one says hurrah for the constitution not hurrah for all the constituencies and legal harmonies which go to make up the constitution and so one says fight the trusts but never the methods and proceedings which distinguish trust from the mo nopoly concentration and combi nation are in line with prosperity when used correctly it is onl when a trust is formed so that through greater efficiency it may sell cheaper to the public that it becomes a benefactor those com binations of capital made for the purpose of sending up the prices by gaining monopolistic control of material are the harmful organiza tions the rai 1 road monopolies are in thursday evening the athletic committee met and organized for 1 904 1 905 officers were elected as follows : merriman chairman c l thornberg secretary archibald johnson treasurer committees for the year were also appointed the track l was awarded 10 he following they franklin and marshall at lancaster several other dates are under consideration it being the intention to have at least twelve games dur ing the season numerals were awarded as fol lows : freshman relay team — bayless j s collins francis hatter levan freshman base ball team — al temus austin ballinger barker brestler deemer fair kramer long mather mcmurtrie mor sacjc s.teiner freshman foot ball team anderson archer banks j s bayless bechtel day fulton gib hie gotshall hoppin johnstone komora laub en stein luckie mc donnell pierce h d smith siein stitie troutman ♦ sophomore relay team — w s bayless hunt m.'l smith wal ters waddell sophomore foot ball team — baker w s bayless carlock fear gladden hartzell janeway krause macintosh ochs park hurst shaffer travis treverton walters westerbeke in view of the large number of numerals granted it was decided that in future numerals should be awarded to not more than fifteen men on each foot ball team and twelve men on each base ball team lehigh's team of cripples suf fered another crushing defeat last saturday at the hands of cornel cornell's splendid interference en abled her speedy halves to circle the ends almost at will nearly all of the six touchdowns scored in the first half resulted directly from long and spectacular runs by gib son and bird gibson made one 6o-yards and one 8o-yards run both for touchdowns and bird made one 6o-yaids and one 40 yardsl run both for touchdowns also in the second half cornell con fined herself to line plunging in which department she was almost as successful as in end rushing three touchdowns being scored in this half for lehigh blazer made a 30-yards run in this half which aided materially in getting lehigh's one score the field was in a very soggy condition due t'j the steady drizzle which kept up during the game the condition of the field was a g'ood help tc cornell's heavy men as the lighter lehigh line could not hold them towards the end of the second half after gott had re placed adams at full cornell seemed to weaken a trifle and le high advanced the ball rapidly mainly by fierce plunges by gott these aided by blazer's sensational run brought the ball to cornell's 40-yard line here cornell braced and lehigh was forced to punt gctt sending the ball to the five ard line where it was recovered on a fumble after failing to gain through the line blazer was called back for a drop kick owing to the wet ball being slippery and heavv the kick went wide bird caught the ball back of the goal but fum bled gott falling upon it for lehigh's only score cornell played a much faster and more aggressive game than le high the latter seemed to think defeat was foredestined and in consequence played in a rather listless lifeless manner the line-up : cornell
