all of the men who heard him then will turn out this time and give him a hearty wel come basket ball dartmouth defeats lehigh thursday night in the gymna sium lehigh's basket-ball team was defeated by dartmouth by the score of 24 to 16 after one of the fastest and roughest games seen here for years brilliant passing and checking on the part of both teams marked the contest through out a great many fouls were called on both teams the most of these were due to over-eager defensive play on each side dart mouth was more successful in her tries at goal at the very beginning of the game referee henry clay was struck in the eye and forced to re tire for a few minutes in this half russ played dartmouth's best game and scored 9 of his team's points pierce was lehigh's star in this half his goal-throwing be ing of a high order the half closed with the score a tie lehigh 11 dartmouth 11 during the intermission the dartmouth team changed to light er uniforms and when the second half opened started out with a rush which fairly swept lehigh off her feet this half was even more re plete with fouls than the first and play was very rough throughout lehigh's tries at goal proved fail ures in nearly every instance while dartmouth seemed to have the basket thoroughly located as nearly all her tries counted in the last few minutes of play travis replaced capt mcmullen and maurer replaced anderson and with the aid of these fresh men lehigh braced and held her oppo nents fairly well but dartmouth had already acquired too great a lead to be overcome and the game ended with the score : christian association of le high has arranged for presentation at intervals of a fortnight took place in the lecture hall of the physical laboratory on tuesday evening when margaret barry the distinguished dramatic reader gave recitals from " les miserables the audience was large and repre sentative but we are compelled to admit that the proportion of atten dance of towns people to that of the student body was not creditable to the latter words of unqualified praise from some of the foremost newspapers and prominent men of the country had come to us regarding the work of miss barry we have yet to find the person who heard and witnessed he performance of this talented artiste on tuesday evening who does not concur in all that they have said miss barry's pre sentation was not lengthy — it was a little less than an hour and a half after secretary edmonds introduced her that the audience took a reluc tant departure but in that time her hearers had been made to live through the story of victor hugo's noble galley slave jean valjean the selection of scenes from the novel for portrayal was so admir able that whether one had read the book or not mattered little in getting a connected and clear idea of the action the first scene which miss barry presented was the famous episode of the silver candle sticks in which the good bishop takes in the famished convict is robbed by him releases him when captured by the gendarmes and tells the man to go and sin no more miss barry entered whole-heart edly into her subject from the very beginning and the impression of this opening scene so important in the subsequent development of the plot was always strong in the minds of the hearers in the next scene which followed after an interval of several minutes miss barry portrayed the awful mental struggle of jean valjean now the mayor of a french town after his conversation with the inspector javert perhaps the strongest acting of the evening was the clairmonts a team com posed of lehigh freshmen were defeated in a one-sided game of basket ball by the nazareth hall five at nazareth last saturday at the trials for the remainder of the cast for jack homer fresh man the mustard and cheese performance to be given on may 6 payne 05 and daniels 07 were chosen which completes the cast rehearsals will be held every wednesday and saturday afternoon from now on continued on phrophecy the first will be given next sunday in christmas hall beginning promptly at 5 o'clock and closing at 5.30 the conceptions which most men have of the old testament are rather vague and every one who can should show his appreciation by a regular attendance throughout the course organ postludes given by mr c e doynton mr c e doynton foreman of apprentices in the westinghouse electric and manufacturing co of pittsburg on last wednesday night delivered a lecture on the develop ment and system of the concern which he represented he traced the evolution of the westinghouse plant from its birth in 1882 when located in the heart of pittsburg and involving three hundred men to the present time when it employs nine thousand men so rapid was the growth in the beginning that after ten years their close quarters , were abandoned for a more roomy site in east pittsburg here the number of employees increased to three thousand and by 1899 it had increased to eight thousand from 11892 until the present time the works have been greatly extended and their capacity has quadrupled the british westinghouse works serve as an example of the great growth of this plant during its existence that part of mr west inghouse's undertaking has also shown remarkable development employing at the present time fully five thousand men mr doynton entertained his au dience with some amusing biogra phical exhibits all of which were highly appreciated he also showed the manner in which certain ma terials were handled in the shops how the employees were conveyed from the works to the town and many other things of interest to technical men the talk was greatly enjoyed by all those present and gave every one a very clear idea of the enormity of such a plant as he described y m c a meeting monday march
