by buch 2 drawn 1 freshman class meet ing subjects chosen by senior electricals l f blume and s h fleming — an investigation of the polariza tion factor of electrolytic cells c e butz and g it schaeffer — an investigation of the power required to 1 drive machine tools g s mervine and j h wiley — an investigation of the commu tating conditions in single phase commutator motors e l rich and r h smith an investigation of the over volt ages in electrolysis t b mickley and h w prot zeller — tests on the comparative behaviour of two types of induc tion motors when operated on inele pha^e and two-phase cir cuits d m clawson and c e clewell — a report on the present condi tions and proposed improvements of the bethlehem and nazareth and of the slate belt electric railway systems p cloke and n e funk a theoretical and experimental study of a 7/2 horse-power in duction machine as a motor and a generator c d hayes and e v phelps tests of the performance of a 6 light general electr'c constant current transformer mathematical lecture course powerful plea to the students under the auspices of the y m c a mr robert e speer of new york city made a strong plea to the college fellows in the physical laboratory on friday morning in defence of ignorance of that which is commonly called seeing life in his opening remarks mr speer said that knowledge was not always power but instead often led to death — death due to slovenli ness of moral thinking continu ing the speaker pleaded for ignor ance of all evil because first man need not cast himself into wicked ness in order to speak with power from experience knowledge of evil is not power second such ignorance is the secret of freedom man is bound by-the strongest of shackles when under the influences of impurity its effect upon the mind and memory is like a cancer — a terribly dangerous and persist ent condition third ignorance of evil alone holds the freshness of life there is no man today clever enough to invent any new sin again it is the only secret of real beauty no life even if redeemed from sin can be as beautiful as one that has remained without a knowl edge of sin dabbling in sin does not make the life more beautiful finally such ignorance holds the secret of all true fellowship and human love one need not exper ience the sinful himself in order to sympathize fully with the fellow who is down such a course is too dangerous haverford defeated in gym meet on saturday evening at haver ford the lehigh gym team won from haverford college in the an nual contest by the close score of 2^/2 points to 23 in the first event lehig-h started off with a rush by winning both first and second places on the hori zontal bar their lead was greatly increased by getting first places in both club swinging and parallel bars but in the flying rings and side horse haverford showed the best form and as a result took the lead in the scoring by one point the last event of tumbling was to decide the result and captain evans saved the day for his team by taking first place the good form showed by lehigh won the contest as usual the visitors were shown a very good time and royally en tertained by the haverford fellows both before and after the contest the judges were dr h l chad wick dr h s wingert and mr c e suiter the events were won by the men as follows horizontal bar — haverford — brown 06 bushnell 08 lehigh — brown 07 ;
