the annual dinner o>f the lehigh university club of northeastern pennsylvania will be held at hotel lermyn scranton pennsylvania en friday april 28 1905 at 7 p m any person who has attended lehigh as a student or served on her teaching staff is eligible as a member of the club and is invited to attend and bring as many of their friends as thqv may desire plates at 2.50 each will be re served for those sending check and notifying arthur long box 554 scranton pa of their intention of being 1 present some representative of the le high university will be with us and help us to get in touch once more with our alma mater the dinner will be strictly in formal and anyone being caught otherwise will be a subject for such punishment as the majority may decide come and be a boy again just for to-night ar-ihur long president william griffith vice-president charles straw vice-president c f neuter vice-president j . j clark secretary and treas owing to an oversight in the last issue of the brown and white the names of d n showalter 06 an 1 £. h salisbury 06 were omitted from the list of tan beta pi initiates continued on fourth page lehigh defeats cornell score 6 2 lehigh won the second lecrosse game of the present season on wednesday afternoon from the cornell team which is on a south ern trip the game at times was slow which was to a large extent due to the slippery condition of the field and the consequent uncertainty in the bouncing of the ball about three hundred and fifty spectators witnessed the game cornell started off in the first half with a rush and scored the first goal of the game by some good team work lehigh soon followed by a point scored by harrower here the slippery condition of the field began to tell and the playing became slower cornell scored the next point of the game on a shot by turner lehigh ended by a goal form estes who made the point practically unaided lehigh's passing in the first half was decidedly off color and cornell showed a strong defense score 2-2 lehigh came on the field in the second half determined to win estes got the ball at the center and advanced it almost to cornell's goal harrower rcored the point by kick ing the ball into the net lehigh's defense showed a mark ed improvement in the second half barth and johnson doing excellent work harrower scored his third point in the game on a pass from estes on some clever passing from estes to duncan to fox to harrower another point was scored ny harrower the last tally of the game was miade by a succession oi passes from estes to barwis to fox to harrow er cornell's team showed up strong ir judgment in passing and in stick work they also played a strong game on defense scher denhelm doing their best work for lehigh estes and harrower played strong offensive games and the whole defense did good work referee lattig lehigh time keepers herman lehigh ; ts musicians to cure all i cases of the blues other fea '■tures will be a fern sem the ex hibition of real colege spirit and a trained domestic animal victor a johnson 96 is with the acme grain co chamber of commerce minneapolis minn address by prof stewart the regular monthly meeting of geological society was held tues day evening in the society's new room in williams ha 1 . the room has been recently decorated and presents a very handsome appear ance the ceiling walls are white with the exception of a wainscoat ingf about nine feet high which is dark green weathered oak set tees and a large black board add to the general apeparance a short business meeting pre ceeded the regular program a committee consisting of johnson latter and carlock was appoint eel to consult with a committee from the mechanical engineering socie ty regarding 1 the nrnmnqpri plan of the two societies jointly installing a pipe line from the spring to wil liamis hall john m fou.se read a very inter esting paper upon refactory ma terials in which he discussed the subject from the folowing stand points what are the best and at what cost can they be procured refactory materials may all be classed under three heads 2 acid refactory materials b basic refactory materials c neutral ref actor v materials it is a well-known fact however that both acid and basic materials are apt to combine with the acids and bases in slag to form fusible compounds very fine qualities of silica brick or acid refractory material can be obtained at a miuch less cost than the basic materials such as magnes ire brick a combination of the two is highly effective the prin cipal acid refractory materials used in furnace construction are ordinary fire clay bricks fire bricks made from clay having a composition of one part alumina to twio parts sil ica and silica brick made from sil ica sand containing just a small amount of bases the chief basic niagnesite brick recent experiments in the use of the elastic furnace have been made envolving f he use of carborundum which is a compound of silicon car bide this carborundum is very expensive and is used by grinding it finely mixing three parts by weight with one part of silicate of soda and applying it as a white wash a coating of the thickness of a half millimeter is unacted upon at a temperature of 3000 degrees f
