serene the university orchestra ac companied the singers and played several selections between the acts the rendition of the several pieces played shows the result of the per sistent practicing which was defeated by new york university by the score of 79 to 1 pg the result was a foregone conclusion from the start as lehigh was completely out classed in the hammer-throw pyne won lehigh's only first at the same time breaking the college record with a throw of ir>6 feet 9 inches lehigh took second in the 100 yd and 220 yd dashes the 220 yd hurdle in the 40 yd and 1 mile runs and in the pole vault held its annual per formance at the grand opera house the association this year presented an original comic opera entitled jack homer freshman written by some good friends of the university the audience was one of the largest that has ever at tended a lehigh performance and the appreciation of the effort show dearly the wisdom of the manage ment in presenting a musical piece the first act opened at a part of the campus near the president's house a chorus of sophomores was assembled and was regaling it self in song at the conclusion of the song jack homer entered as he was about as verdant as the average freshman he was immedi ately introduced to and wias duly cowed by the college spirit which was a materialization of that most essential characteristic of college life jack soon revealed his love for josephine the daughter of the president of the university and by substantial persuasive inducements attempted to secure the aid of snowball lord high sneak and tattletale at this point butter semmel a vender of nice dings entered and hinted through the medium of song at her possibly varied career ■matrimonial complications were introduced at the appearance of miss moravia,a fern sent teacher who had fallen ' in love with jack homer the hand of josephine was also sought by otto yon rose burg lord high secretary to the faculty and professor of mathe matics this professor on learn ing that jack homer appeared tc be the favored one in the eyes of josephine established a rule for bidding flirting on the campus in order to find some cause for the ex pulsion of jack snowball by stri.-t attendance to his duty managed 0 find jack breaking the new rule and jack was called before the trustees who at this time were on their annual visit at the beginning of the second act jack homer asked for and re ceived the promise of the aid of his fellow-students in his love af vol xii the brown and white no 55 track lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday may 9 1905 performance a great success mustard and cheese base ball lafayette defeats lehigh score 15 o lehigih was defeated in the first game of the series with lafayette saturday by the overwhelming score of 15 to o the game which was played on marsh's field eias ton.wias well attended a large num ber of lehigh supporters taking advantage of the special train which was furnished by the lehigh valley railroad the result of the game is due to a composite of the weak stick wor'c poor fielding and stupid base run ning of lehigh with the excellent pitching of newberry and the sharp fielding of lafayette in the first inning newiberry hit blazer and root the first two men up snyder struck out person sent a grounder to hawk who touched second and threw to first in time to catch person retiring the side on the double play from this time on to the end of the game lchio-h went out in one two three order with the exception of the seventh inning when after snyder and persons had both hit safely steiner stiuck out and morsack drove one to huibley who touched third and threw to first for another double in the second inning long gave a pretty exhibition of fielding mak ing three assists lafayette's first runs came in the third when snook was hit and scored on h>ubley's three-bagger mcavov reached first on steiner's error which allowed huibley to score a minute later reeder laced out another triple scoring mcavoy and coming in himself on hawk's single lafayette added four more runs in the fifth three in the sixth and four in the eighth making a total of 15 to lehigh's o line-up
