with broken collar bone undaunted by rain lewis picked reports made slippery field tomorrow which is armis tice day representatives of the american red cross will conduct a drive for member ship of the students in that organization these repre sentatives will be in all the buildings on the campus throughout the day in an ef fort to enroll as many stu dents as possible it is hoped that a large number of men will pay the fee of one dollar or more last year the show ing of lehigh students in this drive was relatively poor and it is up to us to show our in terest in the movement by joining in large numbers to morrow everybody knows of the work of the red cross and the tremendous amount of good which it does so it is up to us to help it in this work by contributing this small fee a regular meeting of the burr board was held on thursday eve ning november 6 at seven o'clock in the phi delta theta house it was quite a surprise to all present when it was learn ed that this meeting was more or less of a banquet chairman unkles of the burr board be ing the host con on page 5 col 7 after sadly ravaging the food set before them they were in much better condition to discuss the problems of the evening the business on hand being disposed of dr drown the newly ap pointed financial advisor of the board was introduced dr drown gave a short talk setting forth some new and rather nov the editorial and business staffs of the 1927 epitome the annual publication of lehigh are hard at work on several sec tions of the coming annual sev eral sections of the book are rapidly nearing completion and will be forwarded to the print er's in a short time after much consideration and deliber ation on the part of the men on the staff the printing contract was signed with berkemeyer keck and company of allen town this company has print ed about six volumes of the epi tome in the past and although they have not done the work for about the last five years they do not lack experience in con on page 6 col 3 cross country team downed by union senior ballots to be distributed brown and maroon ball to be given night of game chickering finishes first for lehigh with aitken a close second california ramblers to synco pate at hotel after game with lafayette class ballots to be given out this week — snapshots needed from 8 till 12 same assessment hard course saturday morning found the followers of the brown and white gridders on their way to washington to witness the game with georgetown university classes were conspicuously slim but that can be credited to the fact that the graduate manager has aspired to a globe trotting football squad and to the zeal of the followers of the glorious sport in supporting their stur dy gladiators many of the campus wrecks started out bravely on their long journey to the national capital with the spirit of the pioneer of old although many of them were missing when the final roll of supporters was called in washington the weather was threatening but what weather is bad enough to daunt the spirit of a lehigh man the drive along the philadelphia pike soon assumed the proportions of a race with the thoroughbred cars of fred trafford and doc bull in the lead the two emulators of barney oldfield refused to acknowledge the fact that they should accept a handicap in the race philadelphia was the first ob con on page 2 col 6 fighting unavailingly upon a field of treacherous ooze and un der a drenching chilling rain lehigh's crippled and disheart ened eleven was beaten satur day afternoon by the powerful georgetown team of washing ton d cmc m in one of the most overwhelming defeats of brown and white history intercepted passes blocked punts and una voidable fumbles were breaks which contributed directly to georgetown's crushing 40-0 score while georgetown played a better game than lehigh it did not excel by the margin which the one-sided score indicates spectacular responses in crucial moments by captain hagerty waite metzger and plansky ma terialized into tallies only one of which however was earned still the ability to seize breaks and to turn them to advantage denotes an alertness and re sourcefulness worthy of reward and so georgetown was richly rewarded con on page 3 col 7 despite the fact that six touchdowns were gained against the brown and white the blue and grey were held to eight first dowr\s this shows that punts provided the best method the first meeting of the ra dio society was held friday evening in the physics lecture hall the main feature of the program was a talk on radio dynamics by dr bourgim which was followed by a report of the laboratory committee the meeting was attended by a fairly large number of men and the old members were partic ularly glad to notice that a large number of freshmen has turned out the meeting was presided ov er by r w elmer president of the society the secretary read the minutes of the last meeting the usual business discussion took place president elmer ex plained that the society was es tablished with a two-fold idea : the privilege of operating a sta tion and the privilege of doing any experimental or research work which the members might desire con on page 6 col 5 it was decided at the meeting that the members of the society should be divided into two class es those who were operators and those who were not these two classes were to be known as the operating members and as sociate members it was thought last thursday morning at eleven o'clock a college meeting was held at the flag pole the primary object of the meeting was to hold the election of la cross managerial candidates the men are all of the class of 1927 and entered the competi tion last spring due to several unfortunate incidents the elec tion which should have been held before the close of school last year was postponed until this time the result of the ballot pro claimed richard b lewis assis tant manager of lacrosse for this year to automatically become manager next year john h garrison receiving the next highest number of votes will be the manager of the freshman team next spring and paul e ketterer will be his assistant after the ballots had been cast and collected by the mem bers of the arcadia the cheer leaders endeavored to arouse a new spirit of lehigh which has been conspicuous by its ab sence during the last few games bosey gave one mercersburg academy wins over freshmen by score of 12-0 ' lafayette wins over rutgers carnegie beats drexel and villanova downs st . joseph big scores the week-end of the lafay ette game is to offer an added attraction to the students and returning alumni in the form of a brown and maroon ball to be held at the hotel bethlehem the saturday evening following the game this ball promises to be one of the outstanding social events of the college year cer tainly it will add greatly to that week-end which is so looked for ward to by students and alumni alike the ball is under the manage ment of cork o'keefe who has ably managed the dances given that same night for the past two years this year's dance is ex pected to be even more of a suc cess than the two preceding ones the music will be furnish ed by the original california ramblers famous columbia record artists who need no in troduction to college men any where the dancing will be from eight to twelve in the ball room of the hotel and the tax con on page 2 col 3 navy hands lehigh jolt in soccer tilt sharp contest gives middies victory over b & w booters while lehigh was sustaining a 40-0 defeat at the hands of georgetown the future oppon ents of the brown and white were faring much better all of them being victorious villan ova downed st joseph's college 19-3 lafayette overwhelmed rutgers 34-0 and carnegie crushed drexel with a 45-0 score by virtue of its victory over st joseph's villanova annexed the catholic grid championship of philadelphia st joseph's coached by ed mcginley for mer perm star fought gamely but were no match for stuhl dreher's powerful eleven vil lanova scored their first touch down early in the first period and scored one in each of the other periods except the sec ond in the second period by con on page 6 col 5 one touchdown playing under very poor con ditions the lehigh freshman football team dropped a very closely-contested game to mer cersburg academy on saturday by the score of 12-0 the game was played at mercersburg and as this was the annual letter day for the academy boys the play ing was very strenuous the battle was fought during a rain-storm and there was no score during the first half the best mercersburg could do was to work the ball down to le high's 7-yard line near the end of the first quarter but relin quished possession of the pig skin when held by lehigh at half time mercersburg threat ened again but lacked the punch to shove the ball over the chalk mark con on page 6 col 2 the lone touchdown of the game came in the third period when holmes carried the ball there have recently been privately printed in book form three addresses by the late rob ert w blake professor of lat in at lehigh university and head of its college of arts and science from 1899 until the day of his death on january 27 1921 the book also contains a foreword by dr henry sturgis drinker president of lehigh from 1905 to 1920 and also trib utes by professor philip m pal mer who edited the book and raymond walters formerly re gistrar of lehigh university now dean of swarthmore col lege outside of college circles professor blake had many warm and admiring friends in the volume which has just ap peared the true man is shown in bold relief in the autobio graphical sketch of his life in the founder's day address and in the address made at the dedi cation of coppee hall are re vealed the lofty sentiments the keen understanding of human nature the rare learning the lovable qualities of one who knew how to make and keep friends of one who inspired in the student body and in all with whom he came in contact a deep respect and an abiding confi dence ll the little book reveals the m & c notice mustard and cheese club members competitors for cast or chorus musical com petitors and men interested in any phase of this year's production are requested to report at 7:30 wednesday evening the 11th at drown hall attendance is very important the senior class ballots are being distributed this week and every effort is being made to have them in the hands of every senior by the end of the week any senior who has not received his by tomorrow should try to see the member of the committee in his course to get one the members of the committee ac cording to courses are as fol lows nicholas and pakenham b a ; davis and maxwell bus ; bell m e ; zug e e and eng phys white e m and met law ch.e and chem train er and swindells c e these ballots must be filled in and re turned to any member of the committee before the lafayette game complete instructions for fill ing them out are given on each ballot and should be followed out as closely as possible in or der to facilitate the work of the committee the assessment of 14.00 should be paid as soon as possible and must be paid before december 15 seniors should get their pic tures taken at their earliest op portunity at mccaa's or any oth er first class photographer while it is not necessary to got the pictures taken at mccaa's the committee recommends this place because it is more conven ient and the individuals do not have to worry about turning in their own print since he tends to it for them snapshots of any members of the senior class are needed by the committee and will be greatly appreciated ei ther the negative or print can be used and in case of the former it will be returned to the person who submits it con on page 2 col 4 in deciding upon the amount of the assessment it was finally decided to make it the same as last year although a reduction was considered possible at first and would have been but the the swimming pool in taylor gymnasium may soon undergo some radical changes it has been rumored that it is to be en tirely reconstructed and relin ed with tile lehigh's pool would then be as up-to-date and mod ern as any collegiate pool in the country con on page 2 col 5 during the year the swim ming pool has been a source of continual trouble and some pos sible danger fairly early in the year the tri-weekly examina tions by the department of bi ology disclosed the fact that the bacterial count in the pool was rising quite markedly and that the turbidity of the water was increasing every effort was made to determine the cause for this condition a broken pipe vas discovered under the east end of the pool which permit ted water to escape from the pool and also when the pool was being filled forced dirt and filth up into the pool the pool was closed until this pipe could be dug out and replaced this elim inated one source of danger the mechanical filters were also sus pected of not being in the best condition due to the fact that they had been in use for nine years and had never been clean ed these filters were ordered cleaned and the filters removed this work was done about the middle of the year the num ber one filter was found to be the lehigh soccer team met defeat at the hands of navy to the tune of 2-0 the contest was a thriller from start to finish both teams were on edge and played a very fast game with the result that the outcome could not be surmised until the final whis tle blew early in the first quar ter young star forward for the sailors shot the ball through for the first score of the game the dribbling and passing of both teams was spectacular and it was the stellar defense put up by the lehigh fullbacks that time and again stopped the navy co con on page 2 col 4 the lehigh harriers were de feated by union college at schenectady last saturday by the score of 19 to 36 the strong union team led throughout the race and deserved to win but lehigh undoubtedly could have made a better showing under more favorable conditions this was the ninth consecutive win for the strong union team ear lier in the year they accomplish ed the enviable record of defeat ing fordham by a perfect score this in itself indicates their great strength the lehigh team left bethle hem friday morning and went by train to new york and from that city direct to schenectady arriving there at about four p m the lehigh team was then taken over the regular six mile course in taxis it was some what dark and the lehigh hill and dale experts experienced dif ficulty in locating the various landmarks along the trail the team returned to bethlehem af ter the meet by way of albany where in one of the best restau rants of the city they enjoyed a very good dinner they went by boat to new york and re turned to bethlehem on the black diamond sunday morn ing the union team is coached by howard anson bruce formerly track coach at lafayette the union team pushed three men across the line before the le high team was able to score these same three men have fin ished in the same positions in all the races run by union this year totten of union took the lead early in the race and maintain ed his position throughout breaking the tape for the six miles in 36 minutes and 16 sec onds he was quickly followed over the line by johnson and mcmillan both of
