continued on fourth page bridge night the last regular meeting of the civil engineering society for the season 1904-1905 was held on tuesday evening the officers for next year were elected the follow ing men being chosen president k m merriman 1906 secretary m m farley 1906 treasurer g e kent 1907 and faculty adviser h a pace c e speeches were made by the newly-elected officers and the hope for a successful sea son next year express?d bridge work was the subject of the papers for the evening the first speaker was julius r hall who read a very interesting paper on the three hinge arch bascule bridge by means of sketches he showed the development of the bridge mr hall had examined a draw-bridge which swings on a centre pivot to the three-hinge arch large number of different bridges of these types and his talk was most instructive the second paper was by david n showalter on some points of drawing practice mr showal ttr has had considerable experience i drafting rooms and related the difficulties met with in some special cases pie said one of the hardest things to design was a spiral stair case with railing as it was difficult to show in plan and to construct in elevation this work is very inter esting and short hours but ex tremely hard on the eyes and health the third paper was by clarence derrick on details of bridge con struction mr derrick explained the steps gone through in designing and constructing a bridge from the start until the structure is com pleted pie stated the necessity of great care in the drawings so as aija 1j confusion will be avoided in the shop all work is carefully in spected before it leaves the shop so that no tfouble may be experienced when the bridge is erected the members oi the forum were the guests of the society at this meeting and refreshments were served the annual opiel will be hold soon details of which and the date will be announced later the annual national convention of the psi u fraternity is being held in bethlehem this week coach mcguire of the lacrosse team is the proud and smiling father of a new-born bouncing baby boy what is the trouble with ath letics at lehigh the question is an old one but deserves more consideration now than ever before a striking example of the mam causes of our poor showing is af forded by the record of the past week on saturday the base ball team was beaten by lafayette by ihe score of 15 to o ard at the same time the track team lost to new york university the score being 79-29 on wednesday afternoon the lacrosse team made an excellent showing against swarthmore and showed that it did net share with the other earns in the common faults in the first place our teams are made up too largely of underclass men especially freshmen the basket ball team had one senior one junior and three freshmen the track team that was snowed un der at new york on saturday was composed of two senior three ju ti'ors seven sophomores and five freshmen in contrast with this is the lacrosse team which is made up of five seniors five juniors four sophomores and no freshmen secondly a large share of the athletes wants to quit as soon as they have one or two trips or have received a monogram or an l there hav been many illustrations of this but probably the worst ex ample in recent years is afforded by our present track team four seniors and one junior men who made the bulk of our points last year and who could do even better this year have not come out la iayette has beaten us once in base ball and nothing else can be looked for in the coming track meet unless the men in college with track l's will help the track team almost one-half of the track squad quit after the inter-class meet because they did not expect to make the team in the first year the gymnasium team had a simi iai experience it was composed of no seniors two juniors three so phomores and two freshmen the best horseman the best tumbler and probably the best club swinger in college all seniors did not assist ihe team in lacrosse every good player is out for the team and keeps on training until the season is over the result is that experienced up per classnmn make up the team and reflect great credit on the college by their record continued on third page a meeting of the junior class was held at 2.30 o'clock wednesday af ternoon in saucon hall the re port of the junior prom commit tee was read and approved the treasurer's report was also sub mitted action was then taken on the method of holding the election for the senior year it was de cided that nominees for the several offices should be selected at a cau cus the membership of which is to consist of a delegate from each fraternity and a number of non fraternity men representing pro portionatel the non-frat men of die class university supply bureau t a h maw hinney was retained as manager for 1905 and 1906 and b m swope was elected assistant manager c f gilmore was elected presi dent and a r treverton secre tary and treasurer of the board for next year the following nominations for directors were submitted to the va rious classes to be voted upon at tbeir next regular meeting 1 : juniors t a 11 mawhinney j r james r s drumnnond # sophomores r s porter b m swope r macminn freshmen c b bressler hi d smith w l archer junior class meeting lehigh loses to swarthmore score 7—4.7 4 lehigh and swarthmore played their annual game of lacrosse on wednesday and after a hard fight swarthmore finally won out the game was well played by both sides and was easily the best exhibition 0 lacrosse seen on lehigh field thus far this season the passing and catching was superb and fre quently brought the spectators to their feet while the shooting if not at all times accurate at least was sensational at 3.40 both teams came on the field and after the ball had passer 1 from one goal to another several times prechtl finally passed a good cne to estes who shot the first goal for lehigh a few minutes later prechtl added another to the score after this the ball was contested for by both sides without effect until price swarthmore's star at tack made her first point another later and the score stood even 2-2 at the end of the first half the second half opened b swarthmore scoring a clean goal but this was counterbalanced by yon bories shooting one for le lugh which again tied the score the game was thus far intensely in teresting as both teams were work ing hard for supremacy with the score even swarthmore took i brace and by a succession of fine plays and passes shot four goals which brought her score to a total of 7 to lehigh's 3 toward the end of the half prechtl slammed a hard one against the net the game ended swarthmore 7 le h gh 4 the play was notable on account of the unusual roughness displayed in both teams but in this respect swarthmore was the chief offender as she had a man ruled out for de liberately tripping his opponent lehigh defense was strong and at critical moments
