mr bernstein 96 and w c cornell 94 are in the faculty of temple college philadelphia as night instructors bernstein handles mathematics and cornell is an ex ponent of the test tube and general principles of chemistry imbibed during his course here under pro fessor chandler h d hess 96 is an instructor in mechanical engineering at drexel institute philadelphia on wednesday the eleventh of november miss mary elizabeth hayes and mr tom mercer gird ler 01 will be married in louis ville kentucky y m c a notice the regular stated meeting of the philadelphia-lehigh club will be held thursday november 12th at 8.15 p m at the university club 1 5 10 walnut street matters of vital importance will be brought up by the various standing commit tees on the lehigh-lafayette spec ial train the december meeting and the annual smoker you are interested in all of them therefore make every effort to attend as it concerns you after the meeting mr moritz bernstein 96 will give a paper on the torresdale conduit in connec tion with the philadelphia water supply it will be profusely il lustrated by lantern slides showing the actual progress of the work this tunnel has been quite an engi neering feat and worth while see ing a light luncheon will be served come moriz bernstein secretary prof h e rondthaler of the moravian college will speak to the members of the y m c a next sunday evening at 6.30 it is ear nestly hoped that the fellows will give him a grand reception bible classes meet as usual at 9,15 a class has been formed in bethlehem and any who wish to nieet with the same will kindly hand their names to the secretary the mission study class meets thursday evening an interesting meeting held the regular meeting of the for um was held in saucon hall last tuesday evening although the attendance was better than at the first meeting still it was not equal to what the society would like to have it and vigorous steps must be taken in order to show an improve ment especially in the number of freshmen who are coming out to the meetings only one new member distler 05 was elected schnabel 07 gil rmore 07 and daniels 07 were nominated for membership to be voted on at the next meeting the m e society requested per mission to use the fq>rum room for three or four of their meetings and this was granted on the condition that the said meetings do not in terfere with the forum and that the room is kept in good condition the matter of filling the vacancy in the secretaryship of the penn sylvania intercollegiate union caused by weir 05 leaving college was brought up but action on it was delayed until more definite in formation could be obtained in re gard to it the nominations for the position were bernstein 04 borowsky 04 and seacrest 05 the debate of the evening was out of the usual order in that there were only two participants the question was resolved that mu nicipal ownership and control of gas electric lighting and street rail way franchises is better for the people martin 05 spoke for the affirmative and beaver 04 for the negative the judges morgan 04 borowsky 04 and kautz 05 gave their decision in favor of the nega tive a general discussion of the question followed in which a num ber of good arguments in favor of each side was brought out a brief resume of foreign affairs was given by kuryla 05 and that of national affairs was given by eh lers 05 the suggestion was of fered that in the future the debates be upon questions which are of more live interest to the technical men than those which are usually discussed at present the program for the next meet ing on november 17th was posted as follows debate question re solved that the united states should demand from russia the evacuation of manchuria affir mative weston 04 and kautz 05 ; negative talley 04 and seacrest 05 resume of foreign affairs by wolfe 05 and of national affairs by wily 05 and of recent literary work by clauder 04 the posters that were drawn for were won by morgan 04 kautz 05 distler 05 and gilmore 07 resolution at the annual meeting of the board of trustees of lehigh uni versity on university day june 17th 1903 the following resolution was unanimously adopted : resolved that the board of trustees gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the alumni and former students of the university in main taining its scholastic work on the high plane which has always char acterized it the generous contri butions of the alumni during the last four years amounting to 34 400 have relieved the trustees from grave anxiety both in carry ing on the established work of the university and in providing for its normal and healthy growth the hearty spirit in which the alumni are contributing to the needs of the university during its period of financial depression brightens its outlook and encour ages the trustees in their efforts to keep the university in the first rank of the colleges of the country the secretary of the board is hereby authorized to express to the alumni association of the univer sity and through the association to all the former students the sincere thanks of the board for their timely and gracious support the brown and white vol xl forum lehigh university south bethlehem pa saturday november 7 1903 mechanical engineering society alumni notes recent issues of the electrical world and engineer and the american electrician illustrate a new line of direct current machin ery brought out of the silmens halske co of england and credits the design to a s clift formerly of the crocker-wheeler company x\mpere n j mr clift is a 95 lehigh man and took a degree in mechanical engineering proposition by prof klein in accordance with the time scheduled a meeting of the me chanical engineering society was held on thursday night in the for unii rooms upon announcing prof klein as the first speaker of the evening president haller formally opened the meeting prof klein stated that the so ciety had his best wishes for a rapid development and that it should at all times have the hearty co-operation of his department he also offered two prizes the first of twenty dollars and a second of ten dollars for the two best papers pre sented to the society on conditon that during the year at least twelve standard themes be submitted for competition he further suggest plans for the betterment of the or ganization and for obtaining a more regular attendance prof heck followed with a short address in which he supplemented pro klein's remarks by earnestly urging every man to keep in close touch with the engineering jour nals in connection with the regular assigned studies after due attention to the busi ness of the society then on hand lots were drawn and the four pos ters raffled off the lucky members being prof klein and messrs reno bennett and powell the members then adjourned to an in formal array of refresments after which the meeting gradually dis persed c r yerrick 94 has been re cently married and is again with the philadelphia rapid transit co of philadelphia smoker announced a large part of the student body assembled in the physical labora tory lecture room on tuesday after noon mr mussina conducted the meeting mr underwood spoke of the trip to cornell on saturday and urged all those who were able to take the trip as it promised to be the best of the season it was moved and carried that the allentown band be engaged for the lafayette game the cost to be sustained equally by the four classes the usual college smoker was announced to be held on fri day november 20 some new fea tures will be introduced to make it a novel and distinctive meeting 1 . college meeting numerals awarded freshmen left out at the regular meeting of the athletic committee last thursday evening class numerals were award ed to those who took part in the founder's day sports the fresh men teams and sophomore track team received no awards on account of mistakes by the captains of the several teams numerals were awarded to soph omores for foot ball as follows : barwis crowther cort clingerman dorrance delap eustes geisewite jacobosky sacks searfass van duyne wrightson wattson wheeler for base ball to : myers maurer badgely johns adams powell langdon nollan wall cupitt gosling lueders wheatley mcniff the freshmlen will probably re ceive their numerals at the next meeting of the committee in de cember no 3
