interesting talk on the " first principles of christianity pointing out the things which are expected of every chiistian and the manner by which a " christlike " personality might be retained mr gilbert the college y m c a secretary made several im portant announcements in the first of which he stated that there would be an organization of " missionary study " classes next thursday night also on next saturday afternoon the bible study institute will bold a session in christmas hall from three to five o'clock mr cooper who is at the head of student bible study in america and mr turner the leader of the committee on national missionary will speak on " bible study this subject will be further discussed at the second session of the institute which takes place 6.30 p m of the same day next sunday morning there will be a united meeting of the bib c classes at the regular time in the evening rev thealer of the mora vian church will talk on " advan tages of bible study to young men mr scheduled with lafayette but were cancelled owing to the disbanding of the lafayette team campus notes the century magazine for janu ary contains a poem entitled " the book of hours by prof gauss the engagement is announced of w it welker instructor in the chemistry department and miss eva m hutchinson of ailentown the lehigh university club of philadelphia will hold a smoker on the 29th of january at the univer sity club on walnut street j d irving of the department of biology will deliver an illus trated lecture on the " stylolitic structures in limestone before the new york academy of sciences on the 1 8th of january the starvation club has changed its quarters to third street occu pying the building formerly used by the owl restaurant this change is only temporary as the members expect in the near future to return to fourth street near their old quarters professor franklin delivered a very interesting and instructive lec ture on " radium before the jnnior class on thursday last university lecture lehigh defeats swathmore score 21-12 the basketball season was begun in a very favorable manner on last saturday afternoon by the defeat of swathmore by the decisive score of 21 to 12 this score though i decisive does not accurately rep resent the relative merits of the two teams in fact it was an off day for our team and in consequence the margin should have been much larger in fact six of swathmore's points were scored on iouls the game on the whole was very rough as is witnessed by the black eyes which andy and landefeldt have been sporting around the univer sity for the last couple of days these two worthies thinking to in still a little more ginger into the game collided while running at full tilt with the disastrous conse quences afore mentioned the team left south bethlehem at 8.30 a m saturday morning and arrived at swathmore at about a quarter rfter eleven immedi ately after luncheon the team re paired to the gymnasium and j shortly after the game began ; from the start it was clearly seen j that though lehigh could pass rapidly and accurately their shoot ing of goals was far below the average time and again chances were offered for goals but as often they did not materialize ; for the ball would either fall short or bound out of the elusive basket the new man beggs put up a clean fast game and clearly proved he was a valuable man both in of fensive and defensive play the score at the end of the first half was 6-6 lehigh in the second half took a brace in basket throwing which gained for her the large lead in the final outcome the
