the first speaker of the evening was r s herrick 04 whose sub ject was the great newhouse tunnel idaho springs cal her lick spent three months last sum mer traveling through the mining districts of the west engaged in the inspection and study of mines and was therefore well qualified u handle his subject the speaker briefly outlined the discovery and early workings of the rich gold de posits in the idaho springs district and in discussing the economic as pects brought out the fact that most of the valuable gold mines were back in the mountains and could only be reached by narrow trails this tunnel was first contemplated by mr newhouse about ten years ago the purpose of the tunnel is to bring the ores from the mines to the smelter at a reduced rate of freight charges the only means of transporting the ore at the present time is by teams thus making th mining of the ore very expensive english capital has chiefly furnished the funds for the construction of this tunnel the ore deposits in the vicinity of the tunnel are valued at 5,000,000 approximately the next speaker was carlton w buell 04 and his subject was measurement of railroad cross ings mr buell has worked for several summers in the engineer's department of the baltimore & ohio railroad one of the most important duties that fall to the lot of the young civil engineer engaged in railroad surveying is the taking of measurements where one rail road crosses another the speaker alluded to the two methods used in this work and discussed at length the renewal method with which he continued on second page reception to 1907 dr and mrs drown receive the freshmen dr and mrs drown assisaed by some of the faculty with their wives and daughtres received the class of 1907 at williams hall on last thursday evening and with a few well chosen words and a handshake made everyone feel very much at home they were also favored in having with them mr dv bois a lehigh graduate of the class of 92 who has traveled extensively in the canadian rockies and his talk punctuated by views added greatly to the evenings entertainment mr dv bois by means of hi personal magnetism carried the au dience with him in all his exper iences of those daring travels in be half of science which made the talk intensely interesting besides in structive to the highest degree dr drowns forethought in providing physical as well as mental entertain merit was appreciated and a delight ful hour was spent to the enjoy ment of all the class is indebted to dr and mrs drown for a most enjoyable evening the memory of which will ever be dear in their minds and will strengthen the love for their alma mater lehigh at st louis the exhibits of lehigh univer sity at the st louis exhibition will occupy a wall cabinet in the edu cational building and will consist of a number of plates each plate containing four or five photo graphic views the various build ii.gs will be shown together with excellent pictures of the campus hie equipment and method of in struction will be brought out by nu merous interior views containing photos of the physical seam and chemical laboratories a unique feature of the exhibu will be the reproduction of the growth of the university and of the various departments by means of tables and curved lines on cross section ""'-■■<". j d berg's injury j d berg 05 who has been playing guard on the lehigh bas ket ball team this season sprained his ankle in a practice game last wednesday afternoon he will not be able to play again this season berg has shown by his playing this year that he is one of the best guards lehigh has had since the in • stitution of the game at the univer sity a h van cleve c e go has been appointed resident engineer of the niagara falls power com pany and has thus been placed in charge of the largest power plant in the world w j douglas c e 94 who is engineer of bridges for washing ton d c has presented to 1 the de partment of civil engineering 1 complete set assis tant engineer 011 the construction work of the canton-hankow rail way in china he has presented to the department of civil engineer ing several interesting photographs showing the methods of 1904 senior class book the contract for the publication of the book has been awarded to the keystone printing company of bethlehem and everything points to a successful edition the routine work will be finished up as soon as possible in order to give the board time to spend upon the literary side and under this head several inno vations are being contemplated the number of orders already in for the books is unusually large and gives promise of being a record breaker the serious illness of mr talley one o fthe members of the board has proven a great handicap asit"3e prived the board of the services of a conscientious and hard worker it is hoped that the class will heartily co-operate with the board and prompt attention be given to calls for photographs class bal lots and other data and statistics which will be made from time to time the date set for photographs ballots and the payment of the first assessment of 3.50 is march 15th no ballot received after this date will be considered alumni notes y m c a the meeting at christmas hal sunday evening was an extremery interesting one mr rau a mem ber of the advisory board and superintendent of the moravian parochial school w ] as the speaker of the evening he gave an excep tionally strong talk on the subject is there a basis for religion he rapidly sketched the views of var ious thinkers whose ideas have had a bearing on this subject and showed that each one could in no sense be called atheistic he then followed the darwinian theory from the very smallest of organ isms until he came to man and pointed out that there must be some difference between man and the higher form of animals and that dif ference was that man possessed a soul he closed by making a strong appeal for the man to not be afraid of materialism but to think out this question for themselves and they would come to a firmer basis of faith than ever before mr brower rendered a flute solo which was very much enjoyed by all . rev a de schweinitz of bethle hem will address the meeting at christmas hall next sunday even ing there will be special music and with such an interesting talker the meeting promises to be a good one mustard and cheese the
