philadelphia has recently com pleted her new system of indepen dent high-pressure fire mains which takes the place of the customary steam fire-engines and it is note worthy as indicating the tendency towards centralization in modern mechanical engineering practice it is indeed too much to say that the fire-engine will be entirely sup • planted in the near future but such a plant can protect more fully a re gion of sky-scrapers and besides costs much less to maintain fire insurance men have already made a reduction of 15 cents on 100 and when the system is improved prom ise an additional decrease of 10 cents the plant is located in a build ing 72 by 140 feet and receives its water supply direct from the dela ware river powerful pumps force water at a very high pressure through a network of mains aggre gating nine miles in length and covering an area of 425 acres by means of these mains it is possible to send four streams to the top of the highest sky scraper in philadel phia the plant takes the place of about 40 fire engines gas engines have been chosen in stead of steam as it is not necessary to keep up steam all the time and they can be started practically at once the gas for the philadelphia station is derived from the city il luminating gas-mains while the electricity producing the igniting spark is derived from the city light ing system a storage battery or a generator driven by a small gas-en gine provision thus being mad :. against the failure of any one of these sources of current when ultimately completed the plant will contain ten nj by 12 inch vertical pumps each of which will deliver 1200 gallons a minute against a pressure of 300 pounds to the square inch each pump is driven by a 280 horse-power triple cylinder gas-engine and there are two smaller pumps 6^4 by 12 inches the mains are arranged at the river-front so that the pumps of the fire-boats may be connected and increased pressure thus ob tained in fact this plan has been used in several instances previous to the completion of the station with the increasing congestion of buildings in large cities and the erection of structures of extreme height it seems perfectly clear that officers elected the annual business meeting of the lehigh young men's christian association for the election of of ficers was held in christmas hall en last wednesday evening in ad dition to the business meeting sev eral very pleasing specialties wer introduced which added very mu:h to the pleasure of the evening the meeting was opened with a prayer by t a morgan 04 after which the minutes of the last meet ing were read by secretary seipv and accepted reports were read by treasurer hayes chairman kautz of the bible study committee an>i chairman seipt of the missionary committee cupitt in his report of the membership committee showed dearly the great recent advance in the number of members of the y m c a there being 72 new active members and 24 new associate members this year the association has a total membership of 222 mr robert e laramy 96 sec retary and treasurer of the alumm advisory committee gave an ex tremely interesting report amoni other things he said that the chiei desire of his committee was to see a new yv m c a building erected at lehigh in the near future and that steps were being taken to indue the alumni to contribute to this pro - jtct after the reading of the report the meeting proceeded to the elec tion of officers the following men being chosen to hold offices for the ensuing year president h s seipt 05 vice president a w cupitt 06 secretary j a seacrest 05 treasurer g f gilmore 06 on the social side of the ever ing's programme the first numbc was by r g kirk who sang i ain't got no time in his usuai pleasing manner he was followed by r g johnson who sang zan zibar the keen appreciation of the audience was shov v " ••■■■the hearty applause and nur re tails schwarze 05 recited " that good-for-nothing stock ' ;
