y m c a the meeting of the christian as sociation at christmas hall sun day evening was addressed by sec retary slack of the university of pennsylvania after a few prelimi nary remarks in regard to north field mr slack based his talk on a verse from paul's epistle to the colossians about making christ above all all men he said came to college with one definite aim be it scholarship athletics good-fellowship or literature very few men considered at all christ and his call when deciding upon a life work but were led by ambition money or public office to enter a line in which they showed some ability for success what we should do is to take christ into our confidence and let him help us decide where we should work and what we should do there are three things we must then do 1 give christ our love he promises much if we will but love him and such a love had gen gordon in india where he said now let my life burn out for god in the 2nd place we must give christ obedience tf ye love me keep my commandments are the master's words no matter what the duty or the obligation we must obey and not think of the result to our selves in the 3rd place we must give christ the pre-eminence in all things this is essentially what it is to be a christian and to let christ have a place in all our decisions in regard to our work our pleas tires and our plans mustard and cheese college lecture what was noted by many as the most enjoyable and interesting lec tme of the present course was de livered last friday by dr h w wiley upon the work of the fed eral bureau of chemistry dr wiley has been associated with this department for the past twenty one years being at present at its head and his experience along this line of work has made him very competent to discuss his subject to his knowledge of his subject his pleasing delivery and humor ous style added increased interest the lecturer said in explanation that the bureau of chemistry is an auxiliary part of the department of agriculture by an act of con gress in 1862 three sciences were particularly associated with agricul ture i c chemistry bontany and entomology and a separate divi sion was organized under the head of each one the entire depart ment which for many years was regarded as merely a dissemination of ungrowable seds has reached a very important position and a vast amount of work is done as many as 4,000,000 copies of its publications were distributed during the past year the work of the bureau of chemistry is directed to many lines of activity its primary ob ject in direct relation to agricul ture is the study of soils and ferti lizers no examinations are made for the farmers at large but the bureau acts more as a reference board or court of higher appeal in case controversies arising between the farmers and the agricultural ex perimental station the bureau is greatly assited in its work by the lical association which is composed of some four hundred expert chemists in the united , states who study and adopt uni formity in methods of analysis the world's ■congress of applied chemistry has adopted officially the methods of our american chemists which in the last twenty five years have revolutionized the department of chemistry the secondary object of the bu reau is in collaboration with the botanical and entomological divi sions in the investigation of insec ticides to protect farmers against inferior or spurious articles and in the study of waters for agricultural purposes especially as they relate to irrigation the bureau likewise does work continued on third paige score 1 1-9 lehigh defeats perm the university of pennsylvania base ball team was defeated for the first time this season and it was the lehigh nine that administere;l the set back to the tune of 11-9 the game was loosely played by both teams this could be ac counted • for in part by the cold weather and the strong east wind that swept the grounds a num ber of the errors however were made on such easy chances that they were inexcusable but if the fielding was ragged it was largely counterbalanced by the heavy hit ting especially by that of the le liigh team a total of 14 hits and 19 bases easily gave her a large ad vantage over pennsylvania who was only able to connect 9 times not much excitement was mani fested until the beginning of the eighth inning when the score stood 0.-9 pitchers crimean and fennell had both been touched for a num ber of hits by lehigh when cap tain devlin the star twirler of the red and blue team was put in the box he fared no better however than his two less illustrious prede cessors he retired the brown and white in the first half of the eighth in one two three order but in the ninth billy brush the first man up placed one off on the sky-line and crossed the home plate almost be fore the ball touched the landscape snyder who swung next kept up his batting streak by touching the leather for a neat double and was brough home by mackall's single to right an error by catcher ben nett was responsible for the last score as he allowed the ball to roll between his legs while snyder scored the last point of the game after this develin seemed to pick up some and retired the side in the last half of the ninth pennsylvania tried hard to score but a high fly to centre a strike out and a grounder to badgley | ended the game the fielding of powell and blazer and the pitching of badg ley were of a high order while brush snyder powell and badgley were largely instrumental in mak ing pennsylvania's pitching force a little blue the score :
