phi club elects new members soccer eleven blanks army price five cents men to be initiated november 14th and 15th social club parades at wes leyan game — striking costumes win ellsworth will address students on the new poetry business freshmen invited to meet upperclassmen mon day evening radical change in line-up re sults in 2-0 victory over west point candidates will meet director in drown hall at 7 : 30 in the evening , , notice ! due to the serious condi tion of charley prior all so cial functions have been call ed off until his condition is improved the arcadia excellent program glee club chosen was here last year defense impenetrable many sympathetic messages received by charlie prior telegrams from several coaches and teams ex press their feelings many floral tributes the last regular meeting of 1927's representatives in the phi club was held at the sigma phi house on monday oct 19 when the present members as sembled to elect their succes sors con on page 6 col 5 after a splendid dinner at which the sigma phi's were hosts the meeting was called to order by president smith and much discussion was heard re garding enlargement of the club since phi club is primar ily an exclusive organization of men who excell in athletics the number of men eligible is great ly affected by the one-year resi dence rule in athletics in view of this fact it was proposed to extend the number of members to fifteen instead of ten it was finally decided however that the the elections of the scimitar club were held saturday morn ing and the newly elected mem bers held a snake dance on the football field between the halves of saturday's game they wore frock coats with big bow ties and a flower in the button hole as well as straw hats and car ried umbrellas the newly elected members are robert cornelius george trumbore samuel wolfe john lemay walter buck donald burke john bentz donald wil son james polhemus william dorsey harold reese john cul berson richard ullery jack white demeter larisch es mond avery homer heller eu gene o'callahan william wal ters and rodger clark cross countryteam to meet dickinson psychology tests given thursday lehigh will be represented by strongest team in years every new student examined < by standard test the brown and white soccer team journeyed up to west point on wednesday and accom plished what no other lehigh soccer team has done for sev eral seasons — defeated the ar my by the score of 2-0 for the past several years the brown and white dribblers have invad ed the citadel on the hudson on ly to find that the famous mule lived up to its reputation of be ing a good kicker con on page 5 col 3 there are several reasons which add to the impressiveness of the victory the team up un til wednesday had suffered three straight defeats and tho there was the consolation that they were at the hands of strong teams nevertheless they were defeats so this victory meant that the team had found itself another fact which should not be overlooked is the defeat of lafayette by thd army only the week previous and this augurs well for a continuation of the that the heartfelt feelings of sympathy and hope of recovery for charlie prior are not con fined to the lehigh student body and the local townspeople is clearly demonstrated by the con stant stream of sympathetic messages floral tributes and in quiries relative to his condition which are constantly being re ceived by coach wendell and other friends of the injured star his room in st luke's hos pital is a bevy of beautiful flor al tributes sent by friends in con on page 6 col -°>) alpha kappa psi the honor ary business administration fraternity will hold the first open meeting of the season next monday night in drown hall at eight o'clock all students tak ing the business course are heartily invited to attend but special invitation is extended to the freshmen to be present in order that they may become well acquainted with this body the officers of the fraternity and professor carothers the head of the business depart ment will make short talks pro fessor curtis is also expected to deliver a brief address refresh ments will be served after the meeting which will be very short the business administration club which was founded here about five years ago was form ed into the alpha sigma chap ter of the alpha kappa psi about 1922 the present officers are robert freeman presi dent emerson walters vice con on page 6 col 3 general comparison schedule changed bethlehem motor club provides auto route dr hughes to make european trip in near future the lehigh symphony or chestra will receive its initial impetus on monday oct 26 when all men interested will re port to mr luckenbach at drown hall at 7 30 in the eve ning for try-outs all men play ing the following instruments are urged to report for a trial : banjo tenor banjo mando cello mando bass guitar man dola mandolin violins viola flute oboe clarinet basoon a very large turnout is ex pected because good things are in store for both the glee club and the orchestra work will be started in earnest as soon as the men have been picked for the positions in the orchestra so any men who intend coming out at all should turn out monday in order that this work may be begun as soon as possible the number of men in this orchestra will be quite large so the major ity of those that good attendance one of the most entertaining and enjoyable lectures given i lehigh last year was one given by william w ellsworth on the english bible this lecture was very well received and mr ellsworth proved himself to be one of the best lecturers ever heard at the university the faculty at lehigh having in mind the decided hit which mr ellsworth made last year decid ed to invite him again to speak to the students mr ellsworth accepted and consequently will deliver the first college lecture of the year on thursday octo ber 29 the new poetry is the title of the lecture which will be giv en by mr ellsworth this is a lecture which holds the atten tion from the first word to the last a lecture which has prov ed to be one of the most success ful ever prepared by the author seeming to fill in many colleges real want the newer poets are treated of in this lecture as the title indicates selections are read from robert frost edgar lee masters amy lowell va chel lindsay carl sandberg sarah teasdale edna st vin cent millay hilda conklin al fred noyes rupert brooks etc whether auditors have heard these poets or any of them read from their own works or not they are sure to be pleased and satisfied with mr ellworth's of ferings mr ellsworth with his lec tures on literary topics and his recollection of authors is the na tural successor of james t fields on the lecture platform during his career mr ellsworth has lectured at 200 preparatory schools and in more than 75 col leges a radical change has been made in the schedule of the cross country team the team will travel to carlisle this sat urday in order to have a dual meet with dickinson the previous schedule called for a meet with muhlenberg but due to the fact that the school is unable to send a team it was necessary to cancel nego tiations lehigh will undoubtedly face stiff opposition from dickinson it is probable that aitken and chickering because of their ex cellent showing against lafay ette last tested the tests used were made up by the national re search council of washington d c there were some 250 col leges last year who used this means of testing the average mentality of their students the results of these tests in the dif ferent colleges are forwarded to washington where they are carefully gone over and results compared the grades of last year's tests will soon be publish ed and then the mentality of le high's students can be compared con on page 5 col 6 lehigh team meets rutgers tomorrow in annual classic according to the reports floating around the campus the brown and white is going to have a large horde of support ers follow it to new brunswick on saturday to witness the an nual clash with rutgers many students are going on the mack busses some are going in cars while a very large number are relying on the kindness of pass ing motorists to get them to new brunswick in time for the game the entire personnel of the con on page 6 col 5 defeats for wallace's proteges crippled combination will try to make it four straight haverford team to play host to brown and white lehigh soccer eleven to meet stiff opposition over the week-end wendell expects win many changes made in line-up dr percy hughes head of the psychology philosophy and education department has just returned to new york from a short trip through new england and canada he will take resi dence at his home at kings park long island dr hughes is on extended leave for one year and will spend the next few months in new york where he will en gage in research work at colum bia university following this he will sail for europe for the remainder of his leave while at new york dr hughes will also engage in ex perimental work in one of new york's famous institutions for the mentally engineer ing and the ability to mix with other men the average college graduate expects too much he usually tries to make a fortune in a few years and fails in se lecting a job a young man should look toward the future he should select positions in which there is a chance for ad vancement and not hesitate to make a change if he is not sat isfied he should not tie him self down so that such a change coach jack wallace's pro teges smarting under the sting of three successive defeats ad ministered by villanova mary land and cornell are out for blood and the fact that their opponent is lehigh is an added incentive due to the intense ri valry existing between the two institutions last year rutgers came to bethlehem with one of their greatest teams in years fresh from a 14-0 victory over cornell expecting to run rough shod over the brown and white gridders they were given a rude jolt in the form of a 13 changes of address for directory students who have changed their local addresses in beth lehem since they registered are requested to report their change of address at the dean's office immediate ly for publication in the forthcoming student direc tory your new address may be reported lehigh's varsity soccer team will play at haverford satur day the 24th with haverford's junior varsity the latter is in the same league as lehigh and swarthmore stiff opposi tion is expected from the haver ford team soccer is a major sport at haverford receiving as much if not more attention than football haverford boasting of five soccer teams the haver ford junior varsity was victor over west
