on the evening of founder's day the gymnasium will be the scene of one of the most brilliant social affairs of the college year opening as it does the season of university dances the founder's day hop has always brought out the best society of the bethlehems and many out of town people as well for the freshmen it offers an opportunity to become acquainted with the society people of the town and has even proved to be to them as to all who attend a dance long to be remembered the music will be furnished by groman's orchestra which is enough said for all dance goers the gym will be artistically decor ated in the college colors and re freshments will be served by hoppes at the end of the first half many out of town people are ex pected and the hop promises to be one of the best in years mussina ford e taussig music and refreshments j w hertzler campus notes dr drown spent the summer in england dr richards spent his vacation in california prof frazier will pass the winter on the mediterranean and during his absence prof richards will be the head of the metallurgical depart ment dr whitman traveled through europe during his vacation acting under authority from the trustees of lehigh university messrs jacoby weishample & big gin the allentown architects have awarded the contract to erect the big new building for the depart ments of geology and mechanical engineering to messrs wm h gangewere and m t j ochs of allentown who will commence work on the structure at once the experience from the burning of the physical laboratory a couple of years ago dictated that the new building should be as proof against fire as possible consistent with cost and to this end it will be of mill or slow burning construction throughout while all stairways will be of iron and slate all partitions will be fire proof an efficient sys tem of fire mains with hose reels will extend throughout the build ing and furnish ample water for fire fighting in case of emergency two fire escapes are provided in addi tion to the iron stairways the plans call for a structure of 186 feet front and 70 feet in depth covering a ground area of about twelve thousand square feet it will be located on the hillside to the rear of the chemical and physical laboratories and midway between them while its front will line up with the present library the base ment walls will be of stone in ce ment and the superstructure of con crete and brick a great deal of molded brick will be used on the exterior and the imposing entrance will be further set off by richly carved stonework one half of the building will be devoted to the department of geol ogy and the other half to the de partment of mechanical engineering the first floor will contain eight large drafting and recitation rooms four studies for professors and in structors and two store rooms the second floor will provide six more drafting and recitation rooms two large museums two reference li braries two instructors studies and two store rooms the third floor shows a great drafting room for the mechanical engineers taking up one entire wing of the building and magnificently lighted by skylights in addition to windows while the corresponding wing of the build ing belonging to the geologists is continued on third page it is rather early to begin to dis cuss the 1904 epitome but at the beginning of the college year the board wishes to make a few an nouncements in another part of the paper will be found the prizes offered for literary and artistic work the competition for which is open to all lehigh students and it is earnestly hoped that every man who has any talent at all along these lines will respond to this appeal it is the desire of the board to make the literary portion of the book es pecially strong and to do this it will be necessary to have a large amount and wide variety of material from which to select undoubtedly there are plenty of men in college who possess either literary or artis tic ability and it is the duty of these men to contribute something to the annual and thereby make it repre sent the work of the entire college the prizes will be awarded fairly and justly the merit of the work submitted being the sole considera tion it is preferable that all literary articles should be as in previous years of a humorous nature either in poetry or prose drawings should be from two to three times as large as the repro ductions and all lettering should be symmetrical and neat any contri butors desiring any advice or more complete directions see talley or bernstein 04 who will furnish all the assistance in their power articles can be given to any member of the board or placed in the gag box in the east entrance of packer hall to receive consideration in adjudging awards all material must be in not later than february 11 the an nouncement is made at this early date in t order to give every one ample time in which to work and so that there need be no delay in hand ing in promptly all articles or sketches this year the gag box in packer hall will be made use of and the students are asked to write on a slip of paper and drop into the box all roasts college jokes — in brief
